49ers Open UC Irvine Tourney as Strong Start Hopes Grow
Cal State Long Beach seeks its best start ever by winning a UC Irvine tournament first round. The 49ers, three wins from the landmark 11 of 12, face Occidental after an 82-63 win a week earlier. Irvine hosts Redlands in the nightcap while Cal State Fullerton tangles with Edinboro State and Cal State LA meets Southern Utah. Coach Dick Davis calls the tourney the Coast’s best college division event, with Long Beach favored among five title contenders including Irvine, LA, and Utah. Tarkanian plans to start Johnson, Grifton, Nelson, and Robinson, with a fifth starter to be chosen.
