The Progress extends congratulations to George Fisher who turned 100 on October 6. He is the father of Walter Fisher and has resided south of Polk, living with his son here for several years.
Polk County farmers are invited to six major hybrid corn test meetings in eastern Nebraska to compare top hybrids with local open pollinated varieties. Elvin F. Frolik from the College of Agriculture asked Agricultural Agent Kelly to publicize the events. The key meeting at the J C Robinson farm near Waterloo is set for October 6, as part of ongoing statewide tests.
Local social rounds list visitors to the Bertha Beard home and various relatives and friends from White River Hampton Polk York and York area towns. Attendees include BYPU Rally participants at Oakland and a sacred concert by William Wesenauer at the Baptist Church. Several residents plan relocations to Racine Wisconsin and other nearby communities.
Arborville families host relatives from Chicago Iowa and Illinois during visits to Scottsbluff and Central City. Local couples Gladys Bowers and Eleanor Larson wed in Iowa on September 13 and will reside in Illinois. Sewing club plans a Friday Style Show led by Gertrude Flick with multiple local families hosting guests and sharing Sunday dinners in Polk Chester and Hampton.
Local social notes record Mr. and Mrs. P. A. Hanquist hosting a six o clock dinner in honor of Mrs Elmer Hanquist and Reuben Hanquist birthday anniversaries. Visitors include Earl Waggoner and family from Holmes California in the home of Clyde Willits. Mrs O F Alfred travels to Chicago for Miss Lorna Alfred and Dr Dunlaps wedding in Boston. Merle Pate of Kearney attends Henry Horstman home. School Faculty picnic held at Buckleys Park Stromsburg. Mrs Paul Milsap and baby visit Hordville. Herbert Lamb of Leon Iowa visiting fiancée Miss Beryl Smith. Swen Stone Carrol and family visit Iowa relatives. Multiple Polk residents host Swanson and party for Mr Swanson seventy ninth birthday anniversary. Effie Holmes attends a Central City shower for a former Neb Central College classmate.
County Treasurer L. M. Smith and W. W. Norton of Osceola plan another Polk visit on or about Saturday October 23 to interview applicants for drivers licenses. Their prior visit drew a large crowd and the exact date will be announced.
Revival meetings at the Free Methodist Church attract larger audiences each evening. Rev. C B Archer of Wichita assists local pastor Rev. Montzingo. Topics include Gods Invisible Army and Tapping Some of Gods Resources. Public invited to attend any services.
The Frathful Workers Club met September 22 with 13 members and 3 visitors. Mrs Ester Lackey led the program on diseases with Dr J B Williams of Polk giving a lecture. Refreshments were served by Mesdames H A Cramer and Charles Peterson. The club adjourned to meet October 27 with Mrs Clarence Walgren.
Miss Ruth Kathryn Appleton daughter of Mr and Mrs Martin Appleton and George F Heckman son of Mrs Andrew Heckman were married by Rev C A Sward at Swede Home Church on Sept 25. Agnes Appleton served as maid of honor and Donald Heckman was best man. The couple plan a short honeymoon to Omaha and Gage County and will live on a farm north of Osceola.
Sealed bids will be received by the County Clerk in Osceola Nebraska on October 5 at 2 PM and opened publicly for sodium chlorate to eradicate bindweed. Delivery to County Warehouse in Osceola. Base bids requested for 1 ton 5 ton and 10 ton. John S. Anderson County Clerk.
A large crowd from Polk county gathered for the Dedication of Arrasmith Airport in Grand Island on Tuesday. Attendees enjoyed a dance at the hangar with Little Jak Little and his orchestra broadcasting live music. Some listeners also attended the Air Show on Wednesday.
A reception at the M. E. Church basement honored Rev. E. E. Pengelly and his family for another year of service along with the Polk High School faculty. The program featured group singing, an address of welcome by Albert Sundberg, a response by Pengelly, and performances by Doris McCoy, Nellie Beth Shoafi, Floyd Merchant, and Mrs. Glenn Hill. Afterward guests joined in games and refreshments were served for about 170 attendees.
The Country Womans Club convened its annual season kickoff at the home of Mrs. Amel Pierson with 17 members and 3 visitors. Mrs. Richard Sealey presided over the business portion while Mrs. Oscar Pierson assisted as hostess and Mrs. Willard Lindburg performed a piano solo. A luncheon followed.
Nebraska’s Link Lyman returns as line coach host for weekly broadcasts on WOW and KFOR. The show airs Fridays and Saturdays 6 45 to 7 00 pm Central Time sponsored by Standard Oil. Fans can visit dealers for a football album Following The Huskers with action pictures and scoring explanations.

Oscar Stromberg enjoyed a surprise birthday anniversary gathering hosted by Mrs. Stromberg Saturday evening with many friends and relatives in attendance. The party featured games and a luncheon, and Mr. Stromberg received several useful gifts from guests including Ben and Karl Stromberg Emil Johnson Lillian Andresen Harold Baker Clara Peterson Roy Miller and others from Stromsburg alongside York residents Ed Coover Richard Sealey Donald Newton Eddie Larson and Rolland Stromberg.
Everett Cramer Laverne Hahn and Lee Morris were seriously injured when their car wrecked two miles east of Polk after a tire blew out. Miss Algene Flodman and Gladys Anderson escaped uninjured.
James B. Lavender of Lincoln, a Bureau of Animal Husbandry representative, arrives in Osceola to survey cattle testing. Four men will start tests next week, rising to eight, with six weeks needed for completion. Polk County is accredited and the government bears all costs to farmers.
A half mile Osceola paving project on Highways 16 and 81 proceeds in fits and starts as the asphalt mixer suffers repeated breaks and electrical welding repairs. The contractor faces a 25.00 daily penalty if the October 1 deadline is missed, with several weeks more required at the current pace.

A 50 member group from Omaha and towns along the Omaha Clarks corridor urged Governor Cochran to reroute U S 16 toward a No 32 designation and seek paving on the new route. Cochran said paving on No 16 is unlikely in two years due to the state program awaiting federal approval, and noted marking does not guarantee improvements.
Osceola residents Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Wurtz hosted guests including Dr. and Mrs. A. A. Wurtz and daughter, and Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Jones with families. Grand Island’s Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Shafer also attended. The Petersons from Grand Island plan to move to Colorado soon. Central City visitors Rolland Dahlin and Walter Johnson were also noted.
Rev. C. B. Archer of Wichita Kansas will start a revival at the Free Methodist Church in Polk next Monday at 8 P M. A cordial welcome is extended to all by Pastor L. J. Montzingo.
