A group of about thirty five relatives and friends met at the Bunny Schmidt home on Thursday evening to celebrate Eldon Peterson's birthday anniversary. Guests from Bradshaw including Peterson and Smith families enjoyed music, games, and refreshments as they extended birthday wishes.
Polk County Rural Public Power District warns that several farmsteads have been wired without confirmation lines will pass. Farmers should call the Stromsburg office at phone 72 to confirm lines are planned past their properties before wiring to avoid embarrassment and expense.
Hordville residents report family visits from Lincoln and Hampton. Vivian Watson of Lawrence marries Herbert Mann of York on Sept 19. Local gatherings include quilting bees and church events. Ed Gustafson hospitalized. Leo Lindahl had tonsillectomy. Visitors from Haxta Colorado include C C McCune and Joe Wilson.
Miss Mildred Wynn daughter of Mr and Mrs J W Wynn married Howard Sundberg at the Methodist Church Monday morning at eight o'clock Rev E C Staley read the marriage lines A wedding breakfast followed at the bride's home The couple will reside on a farm after a honeymoon trip. The bride is a Stromsburg High School graduate.
Information from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Bureau of Agricultural Economics indicates cattle and lamb prices should stay near current levels for several months. Hog prices may ease in fall and winter but likely stay at least as high as last year, supported by smaller hog supply and strong meat demand. Corn crop prospects are average. Nebraska and Kansas saw losses, improving feed grain, boosting cattle and lamb feeding in the cornbelt. Marketings of sheep and lambs rise this fall, offset by strong feeder lamb demand locally.
Miss Msgpzie Christensen and Miss Dorothy Pearson visited Lincoln on Saturday. Mrs. H. B. Johnson and two daughters visited her sister Mrs. Ellen Anderson near Swede Home Saturday afternoon. Sundberg and Son installed a furnace and oil burner in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Isaacson last week.
Towns face growing pressure from locals on city councils to tax or bar traveling peddlers who canvass door to door. Critics say both locals and outsiders undercut merchants, drain tax revenue, and reduce community support. licensing could level the field with local shopkeepers.
Local residents from Swede Home and surrounding towns visited family homes in weekend gatherings. Guests included Mr and Mrs Herbert Anderson and family, Mr and Mrs Andrew Ang, Walter Eckdahl from York, and others stopping by the Eckdahl, Larson, Green, and Flodman households. Several departures and visits occurred in Genoa, Columbus, Rock Island, Arborville, Hastings, and nearby farms.
The Twentieth Century Club met at Mrs. George Otte's home on Thursday September 30 with Mrs Charles Flick as program leader presenting Recent Inventions. County president Mrs Noyce of York spoke on Home and Mrs Daniel Graves was elected President. Several local residents and 4-H clubs attended events and visits across nearby towns.
A group of friends and neighbors gathered at Mrs Ed Johnson’s Saturday afternoon to celebrate her birthday anniversary with social time and refreshments. Attendees included Mesdames Chas Lindgren Harry Jones and family Miss Rose Johnson of Hordville Mrs Anton Peterson Mrs Clarence Peterson Virginia and Mrs Harry Carlson and daughter. Sunday dinner guests at Mr and Mrs E A Flodman’s home were Curtis Flodman and sons Marvin Fredrickson Carroll Flodman and son Robert Stohl and Marcia. John Wall of Hampton visited on Monday. The Polk Progress and The Nebraska State Journal offer one year for four dollars, to be withdrawn soon.
Tests on Nebraska slopes show cross slope drilling boosts yields. Oats on a table rock farm produced 15.3 bushels per acre across slope versus 9.7 up and down. Wheat on a Pawnee City slope yielded 20.2 across slope and 13.3 up and down.
A record crowd attended the Poultry Field Day at the Nebraska College of Agriculture last week. Visitors inspected experimental work and four large scale plants, with reports that all flocks under college records showed a profit last year. Turkeys averaged about 1.25 dollars per bird in 1936. Electricity speeds egg production at LaRue Brown farm. Demonstrations showed housing thousands of laying hens in a single building and a three story laying house at Roscoe Hill plant. Whitten-Whipperman farm displayed a sixteen unit setup with 2,000 hens capacity.
Miss Helen Swanson daughter of Mr and Mrs John Swanson of Escalon California and Ralph E Cohagan son of Mr and Mrs W F Cohagan of Hordville united in marriage at Saron Lutheran Church Escalon on Friday October 1 at 7 oclock Ralph is a Navy veteran who spent formative years in the area and the couple will reside in San Pedro where Ralph is stationed with the Navy.
In Polk County Mr and Mrs Hilding Dahlin and daughter were guests in the Henry Samuelson home near Stromsburg Sunday. The Standard Bearers of the M E Church met at Mrs Rolland Dahlin Tuesday evening with Miss Ruth Johnson devotional leader and Miss Maggie Christenson program leader. P T Wurtz and sons Leo and Lloyd Kroger were business visitors at Omaha Monday. Mr and Mrs Oscar Gustafson and sons were Central City visitors Saturday evening.
Raymond Branting and his brother James depart for a Minnesota fishing trip, Osceola residents plan wintering in Albion, while D W Adair heads to Long Beach for an open-ended stay. Local families plan moves to Los Angeles and Chillicothe visits, and a 14 year old suffers lockjaw after a mail wound.
The Polk County Board of Commissioners reminds landowners to mow weeds along public roads between July 15 and August 15 and to trim trees or brush obstructing road vision at cross roads and turns. Failure may incur taxes to cover the cost. Cooperation is urged to prevent accidents.
Misses Gladys McCoy and Haz el Nelson of Lincoln spent the weekend here visiting their respective parents. Mis and Mrs Glenn Hill and daughters and Mr and Mrs Wayne Hill attended the Hill family reunion at York Sunday. Bruce Cowgill spent the week end visiting his parents at Clarks. Miss Lou Leymaster of Osceola spent the weekend visiting her sister, Mrs Ross Goethe.
Miss Lorna Alfred of Chicago wed Dr. Charles Dunlap of Boston at the Taylor Lambert Chapel of the University of Chicago on September 29. The bride wore white lace over satin with a bouquet of roses and lilies of the valley. attended by Miss Mildred Bonnell. The groom’s attendant was William Marvel. ceremony by Dr. Norris L. Tibbets. Parents of both bride and groom attended, with notables from Polk and Scarsdale. The bride, a Polk High School and University of Chicago graduate, recently a Billings Hospital dietitian. groom a Harvard graduate and Institute of Pathology member. A reception followed in Chicago. They will reside in Chicago after a short honeymoon.
Dorcas Society sponsors a mission festival at Swede Home Church with a program and lunch. Confirmation and communion services are planned. A list of Sunday visitors and local gatherings includes multiple area families and neighbors in Stromsburg Osceola and Saronville with a birthday party for Mrs. Herman Jones.
