Polk Schools Report Bright Start To New Term

New textbooks arrived for clerical work and typing at Polk High School with junior rings and senior announcements ordered from local vendors. Grade school updates note blackboards installed in music and home economics, with second grade finishing Our New Friends and planning Along The Way readings next week. Freshman initiation wrapped with jokes about uniforms and hats, while Home Making Class focuses on tomato canning and dietary uses. The Zone School in Island highlighted school improvement and state aid discussions, with over two hundred teachers present. Polk High Cubs Pep Club formed with 34 members and elected officers and cheerleaders for the year.

Cornelius Doremus obituary from Polk County

Cornelius Doremus born September 14 1879 Polk County eight miles southwest of Stromsburg died September 19 1950 at age 71. He married Louise Blender February 18 1907 and had six children Francis Howard James Edward Victor Marion Ellen Mae Ralph Walter Arthur Albert with one infant death. He served on the school board and farmed. survived by wife children one brother fourteen grandchildren. Funeral September 22 Polk Methodist Church with Rev Paul Walker. Interment Stromsburg cemetery.

Honor Mrs Hulda Stach on 80th Birthday

An open house Sunday at the church celebrated Hulda Stach’s 80th birthday with about 100 guests. Family and friends gathered for a program led by Otto Wilshusen, with songs, solos by grandchildren, and a lunch served by her daughters. Mrs Stach, a long-time member of Imanuel Congregation, has five children, 14 grandchildren, and 16 great grandchildren.

WSCS Anniversary Observed at Hordville Church

The WSCS marked its 10th anniversary at the Hordville Methodist Church with 35 guests from Polk Methodist Church attending. Rev. Carlyon’s wife Mrs. Richard Carlyon spoke, a Swede Plain trio performed, solos were sung, and about sixty attended a lunch in the parsonage.

Two Farm Sales Slated Next Week Near Shelby and Osceola

Two farm auctions are planned for next week. On Tuesday near Shelby four miles north and one east, Joe Birkel will offer farm machinery two milk cows hogs and miscellaneous items with Homer Ingalls as auctioneer and First National Bank of Shelby as clerk on October 3. On Thursday October 5 near Osceola two miles north and 1 4 west a cleanup sale for Mrs Mary Grassicklaus will feature farm machinery livestock and household goods starting at 1 00 PM with Merrick and Looker as criers and Don Byers as clerk.

Sales Barn Celebrates One Year of Operations

The Sales Barn marks its first anniversary with total hogs and cattle sales of 625000 dollars and 11210 head consigned. Attendance exceeded 6000, averaging 110 per sale, as buyers and sellers joined auctions. The Stromsburg market is positioned for a strong packet market next year with Omaha top at 10 cents above.

Mrs Zierott and family visit ends in Long Beach

Mrs L L Zierott and her daughter Joan return to Long Beach California after visiting Mrs Zierotts sister Mrs Helen Isaacson. The group including Virginia Harding Kathleen Holmes and Lois Miller discussed attire choosing royal blue sweaters and skirts with wire blouses shoes and anklets. They talked about clues and set a 50 cent per semester rate. Meeting adjourned at 9 45 AM.
