Public sentiment in Polk favors funding playground equipment by the Commercial Club for Polk city park. Businessmen report strong public requests to place the equipment where it serves the most residents. With funding available and spring arrival in sight, the next step rests with the Commercial Club.

Mildred Snodgrass was named a grandmother after a six and a half pound baby girl was born to Lt. Milan Snodgrass and wife in Boise Idaho where he is stationed. Several Osceola residents hosted and visited relatives, including trips to Nevada Missouri for a College scholarship and a dinner party for visiting Elwoods, Mills, and Peterson families. Tech Ralph Cooper returned from France and Germany on 30 day furlough. Eastern Star and WCTU activities were noted with initiations and guest speakers at local meetings.
The local American Legion Post met Thursday evening at the Fire Station with strong turnout. Officers elected for the year: W R Whitacre Commander, Lavar Sanders Vice-Commander, Carl H Steelquist Adjutant, I W Davis Service Officer, Ralph E Upton Finance Officer. Discussed a memorial for World Wars I and II service members. Legion membership rises with new veterans and many businessmen signing up for their sons and workers.
Polk County four Farm Bureau units gathered at Osceola Hotel on September 18 to set topics for twelve unit meetings. They outlined plans for the county bureau board and the October 22 Osceola gathering, plus program details including tax, insurance, soil, crops, and rural services.
Public notice states Polk Stores will close Friday from two oclock until after the football game. Polk business men urge customers to attend and support the team.
W. W. Norton of Osceola was selected to speak to the Polk County Teacher's Association when they meet in Polk on October 9. The Polk Municipal Band under S. A Ramp presented its final concert in Polk City park Sunday afternoon. A large crowd attended as the ensemble of over forty musicians showed marked improvement since their first concert in June. Ramp is congratulated for leading a fine group.
The National Organization for Public Health Nursing warns that more than double the pre war nurse totals, at least 69 000 public health nurses, will be required for a full postwar health service. The leaflet Your Postwar Job urges guidance for returning nurses and notes current 20 to 30 percent vacancies in some departments. It details the nurse role in disease control, family health, nutrition education, and patient care. Copies are free from the National Organization for Public Health Nursing in New York.
The Polk Ministerial Association met at the Baptist Parsonage for its annual business meeting. Attendees included Rev. A. C. Bates Rev. Paul Lemke and Rev. Nels Pearson. Bates elected chairman Lemke secretary-treasurer. A 26 oclock picnic dinner preceded the session.
Bernard A. Thomas son of Mrs Wm Crotchet of Fullerton born Sept 25 1894 died Sept 21 at Joe Karges farm from a heart attack He lived on the west coast ten years returned to Nebraska in 1944 farmed for George Mace He leaves a son in service his mother a brother and two sisters Funeral rites were held Sunday at 2 00 at the Methodist Church in Fullerton.
Polk High football opened the season with a 21 to 0 victory at Stromsburg over Stromsburg. The win, Polk’s largest margin in recent years, featured a fast, shiftier team and early scoring. Genoa comes to Polk next Friday for the first home game, Osceola visits Polk on October 12 after a scoreless David City tie. Coach Goeing and alumni helpers aided in two full practice squads.
Walter Gestrine left town after a 16 day furlough with family then visited his brother at Camp Walters in Texas en route to Hondo. Cpl Maxine Rystrom spent a furlough in New York City visiting relatives before returning to San Diego. Des Moines and Hutchinson travelers and a Seattle discharge are noted among others visiting or departing.
Pfe and Mrs Lee Morris of Chanute Field Ill enjoy a 16 day furlough in the D C Morris home. Pvt Morris will be stationed at Nashville Tenn. Several local families host weekend visiting relatives including S Sgt and Mrs Galen Breshears and Mrs Virgil Lindburg. Breshears recently returned from England and received his discharge at Fort Leavenworth before moving to California with his wife and parents.
National and American League all star players will play an exhibition under the lights at Memorial Park in David City next Thursday Oct 4. Players include Dahlgren Gardella Wasdell Ocester miler Unser Etten Martin Schalk Muncrief and Lake. The game starts at 8 p m.
The Polk County Veterans Service Committee, under state oversight, will establish a veterans aid office funded by county general funds. The body will assist World War II veterans with education, employment, and reintegration while coordinating with federal, state, and local agencies.
County 4 H clubs choose Winter Wardrobe for 1945 46. Mrs Rex Brigham and Mrs Roy Grossnicklaus to lead. Third clothing club in county. Training meetings set October 2 Stromsburg October 3 Polk October 9 Osceola. Demonstrations on using home produced foods in salads and sandwiches. Open to clubs sending two women to learn and teach back.
Floyd Croisant arrived home Sunday for a two week furlough before Leavenworth and visits his parents Mr and Mrs Edward Croisant. Several other locals are noted visiting relatives and recent military discharges as Fleet officers and civilians reunite at home across multiple households.
