Polk’s hopes for a local physician and dentist fade as Dr J B Williams of Wahoo says he will not return to Polk to practice. He cited Mrs Williams health as preventing relocation though living quarters had been arranged. Most dentists prefer larger communities, further dimming Polk’s recruitment prospects.
Mrs Martha P Westfall announced the appointment of Mrs Martin M Jones as the new clerk at the local post office. Jones replaces Miss Winnie Lind who resigned last week. Jones, a former teacher, has held secretarial roles for four years and will keep the lobby open evenings until eight or nine to serve those who cannot pick up mail before seven.
Iowa and Nebraska set duck hunting rules for the Missouri River. Sept 20 to Oct 13, Iowa licensees may hunt only on the Iowa side. Oct 14 to Dec 1945, hunters with valid licenses from either state may hunt within the river stretch but not beyond the opposite state bank. Dec 9 1945 to Jan 1 1946, Nebraska licensees may hunt only on the Nebraska side.
Daily payments are issued for July August and September due to form shortages. Producers may request mailed applications by calling or mailing their cream and milk receipts to the AAA office. Payments rate 13 cents per pound butterfat and 44 cents per hundredweight whole milk.
Thieves entered the Coleman Liquor Store at Hordville late Saturday night and took a quantity of liquor. The owner believes the thieves were light drinkers, taking only pints and leaving fifths and quarts on the shelves. No immediate estimate of the loss is available.
Heavy rains up to three inches drenched Polk county on Thursday with a temperature drop. A mist lingered Friday and Sunday as hail battered crops, breaking several windows at the Donald Hanquist home. Saturday brought the first frost, 31 degrees, shading flowers and delicate vegetation with little damage expected to crops.

The Town Hall Club held its first year meeting at Arborville. The group aims to sponsor a program featuring the Blackhead Bros Quartette from Shenandoah Iowa with date to be announced. A $25 award from County Fair York last August was noted. Committees named include Mr and Mrs Ted Otte Jr on program and Mr and Mrs Harold Redjibnt Mr and Mrs John Wochner on program, with Mrs Ester Lackey and Mr Earl Stevens on the refreshment committee.
W A Stevens enjoyed a surprise 70th birthday party at his home last Tuesday. More than forty relatives and friends attended and presented useful gifts. The hosts served refreshments after an enjoyable evening.
Osceola couple learns their son Pvt Chester Buchholz has been freed from a Japanese camp after more than three years. A War Department telegram and a Sunday letter confirm his location at Yokohama and plans to reach Okinawa Manila and San Francisco soon. Enlisted February 13, 1941, he served in the Pacific after Pearl Harbor.
Local volunteers urge liberal gifts door to door as the United War Fund supports relief for war orphans and civilians in Europe and North Africa. Funds aid millions, including two million Chinese children, with half the money aiding service members, while letters recount neighborly celebrations and returning servicemen in Polk.
Miss Anna Thompson, treasurer of York College, was struck by a Duncan Produce Co truck while crossing Sixth Street at Blackburn on foot. She suffered a fractured ankle and other injuries as rain and wind reduced visibility this morning. she was taken to the hospital.
Polk residents report ongoing neglect of residential street lights despite the village being debt free. Only main street lights burn on several nights, leaving blocks in darkness and prompting calls for consistent lighting until late hours.

Mrs Leah Shirey left for Long Beach CA after a Chicago PHO Convention trip. Walter Melrvin of Wichita KS spent a week with relatives. a Valley Church reunion honored the group. Mr and Mrs Thomas Mills left for Philadelphia after visits with Osceola brothers. Mrs Marshboll of Chicks visits her son and family in Osceola, Hugh Johnston family listed.
Mrs Thomas Hulme of Bellview spent several days here last week with her parents. Mr and Mrs T D Olter and Mrs Ray Werner and family were business visitors at Grand Island. Dr and Mrs Will Burgess of Albion visited the R E B Merchant home. Friday and Sunday guests included Pfc and Mrs Lee Morris of Chanute Field, Til. and others from Bradshaw Benedict and York.
Dr and Mrs C R Peterson learn their son Lt Max Peterson is now stationed in Manila. He enlisted June 22 1942 and entered active service March 30 1943 while a University of Nebraska student. He previously trained at Camp Hood Texas and departed the States August 11th. Address listed as Lt Max Peterson 12th Co iq Det X quilts Siz Ss Gp APO Th & Past. Most of San Francisco Calif anderson ord and Vrs Peterson Lt fr recently enlisted in the Navy stationed out San Francisco Calif.
Genoa routed Polk 20 0 on the local field. Polk showed steadier defense early but Genoa dominated the second half with three touchdowns. Polk had defeated Stromsburg 21 0 last Friday, underscoring a drop in speed and stamina. Central City Reserves meet Polk on Thursday at 3 p.m.
The Pep Club reorganized this fall with Darlene Johnson as president Virginia Nyberg as vice president Retha Creech as secretary treasurer Gloria Petterson as news reporter. Cheerleaders are Phyllis Cramer Marjorie Dahlin and Lena Baack. We hope to drill at the next game.
Miss Dolores Mae Wilshusen and Ray mand Sagehorn became husband and wife in a Sunday ceremony at Immanuel Lutheran Church Polk. The service featured a double ring rite with organ preludes and processional music. After a reception at the bride’s home the couple planned a farm home in Polk.
A Scotts Bluff gentleman arrived Monday to meet the Village Board about a liquor store license in Polk. The board met Tuesday without him and he did not appear, likely informed that a license would not be issued.
Work continues on the former Thesing building on Main Street as P TT Wurtz and Son Pok prepare to open a modern facility. The project promises one of the state’s most advanced implements hoses in the region.

Mr and Mrs N B McNaught and their sons from Omaha plan to relocate to Polk and occupy the building vacated by P Y Wurtz & Son. They will operate a large bulk oil station with W J Kroger, the father-in-law, planning to move in soon.
