A fire of unknown origin destroyed a combined garage and cob house on the C. E. Jones farm north of Osceola late Monday night. Harold Jes and family occupied the farm. Mr. Jones saved his car from the garage as the Osceola Fire Department confined the blaze to the one building.

Polk County Farmers Offered One Year Corn Loan Extension
Polk county farmers with 1937 and 1938 corn under government loan are asked to decide by October 1 on extending loans for 12 months. Extension offers a storage allowance of seven cents per bushel and may be paid in advance to provide space. About 90 percent of Polk borrowers are expected to extend. Extensions are processed at the county office.

Odd Three Foot License Plates Capture Attention
A car on Fourth Avenue displayed front and rear plates each three feet long bearing GB QC-7232. The occupants from Colorado Springs claimed an international license valid in Europe and Africa costing $45. Sorghum Program Plans For York Nebraska Event
Educational programs on planting and harvesting sorghums are planned for a statewide topping contest near York on October 3. Polk county farmers will view harvesting equipment including a combining setup, vertical tickle attachment, and wagon box topper. A free question box will guide the discussion, with demonstrations on feeding sorghums to cattle sheep and poultry plus a sorghum grinding demo. Hogging off demonstrations in Finney field involve 20 head of 80 pound pigs harvesting sorghum grain with one group given protein tankage supplement to test its feed value.

The Polk County WCTU convention met September 13 at Covenant Mission church Stromsburg with Mrs M Haverland re elected to lead. Officers Mrs John Falk secretary and Miss Lulu Hendrickson treasurer retained. A girls’ High School musical number and a noon prayer opened a day of reports and devotions followed by a temperance address Rev H J Plymesser. The Stromsburg Union won the banner for most points. Polk county all risk crop insurance shows 96 percent of 479 policies on wheat seeded in 1938 had losses from 10 percent to total. Indemnity payments aid farmers for loan interest, bills, home upgrades, and feeding next year’s seedbed. Settlements for 1939 losses about 85 percent complete. 1940 program under rapid progress with 1261 growers applying. applications and premiums due before seeding or by September 20.

Polk County Farm Leaders Call for Precinct Elections
Polk County farmers will vote next month to elect members who will run the Agricultural Conservation program for the coming year. A September 19 meeting in Osceola sets plans as precinct elections occur in early October with 2500 eligible voters. Community committeemen and two alternates per precinct will be chosen, county delegates named, and a three member county committee formed. Tractor overturns in trench silo at Miller farm
