County Treasurer LeRoy Smith will issue drivers licenses in Polk next Saturday afternoon. The visit is an accommodation to residents whose licenses expire soon, saving a trip to Osceola. Bring your old license and renew locally.
The first fall Commercial Club gathering met Monday night at Schultz Cafe with light attendance blamed on bad weather. Frank Davis shared remarks from a California trip and Arnold Isaacson spoke on the European war situation. Plans are underway for the next meeting on October 9.
The Twentieth Century Club met at Mrs. George Otte’s home with Miss Sybil Otte as assisting hostess. Eleven members and four visitors attended. Mrs. Mervin Shenk led an “An Intelligence Quiz” lesson and Mrs. Leand Bowers presented a “Proverbial Test.” Ice cream and cake followed. The next meeting is October 5 at Mrs. David Dormburgh’s home with Mrs. Daniel Graves leader.
The Polk Progress celebrates its thirty second year of community service since the paper’s founding. The issue credits loyal business patrons and subscribers for its longevity and pledges continued quality in this weekly publication.
Polk County farmers and landowners who seed alfalfa, sweet clover, or other legumes and grasses must file a seeding report with the ACP office after planting. Report to be brought by the farmer to help locate fields and estimate acreage. September 30 is the deadline for planting to qualify for 1939 conservation payments. attention to this ruling is urged to avoid payment confusion.
The Golden Rod Conference met in Stromsburg to elect officers and set new rules. The seven member schools now include Ulysses joining Stromsburg Osceola Silver Creek Polk and Clarks with W. R. French S. B. Hawley L. E. Wilson and J. Carl Bryant as leaders.
A holiday crowd packed Polk Park for the final Sunday concert of the season. Musicians from Aurora and Hardville joined the Polk band, with a California car spotted among attendees. Wilbur Whitacre sang two popular numbers including God Bless America amid prolonged applause.

Sunday guests included Carleton Anderson and family from Osceola and E P Samuelson with Curtis. Merle Gibson and parents of Portland Oregon arrived for a two week visit. Several locals aided by G E Bkstrand assisted in state convention planning. Families hosted dinners and birthday gatherings with relatives from nearby towns and a Newark visit by W J Marquis to see Dr James Marquis and kin.
County Treasurer L. M. Smith began issuing distress warrants for 1938 and earlier personal taxes not paid. Warrants are given to Sheriff Peterson to collect, with both officials legally liable for bond-backed collection. Grand Island school board urged officials to fulfill duties or face liability for losses from tax delinquencies. Sheriff Peterson also issues a notice urging immediate payment to avoid added costs.
Bruce E. Cowgill argues school athletics should prioritize sportsmanship exercise and interschool contact over winning. He warns coaches focused only on victories risk losing reelection and urges boards to expand intramural programs to center effort on fundamentals.
Coach Waldemuth reports twenty three players answered roll call for the first football practice of the season. He stays optimistic about the squad’s work ethic despite early weather and field conditions. The season opener is a night game at Clarks with Genoa visiting on Friday September 29.
The Nebraska Farmer and the Pasture Forage Livestock program will sponsor a statewide sorghum topping contest in September 1939. County contests will determine qualifiers, with a total cash prize of 100 dollars for winners. Last year Buffalo and Kearney counties held a semi official event attracting about 1500 people.
Polk High School faculty and Baptist Church choir will be honored at a reception in the church parlors on Monday evening September 18 at 8 o clock. The event brings together educators and singers for an informal gathering.
Joseph A. Binford, 78, died Tuesday morning at his son Walter Binford’s home after several months of illness. He is survived by three sons and four daughters. Funeral arrangements were not yet announced at press time.
Arborvalle and surrounding residents shared a watermelon feed at the Leslie Tyler residence on Sunday. Several households including Hoffmans Bills Graves Lytle Lackey Merchants Dahlgrens and Fishes joined. Others visited York Blair Grand Island and Lincoln during the weekend.
Polk County 4 H members earned many awards at the Nebraska State Fair. Highlights include crops judging team placing second with Glen Hennings silver medal and Raymond Starostka ninth individually, plus multiple blue ribbons in showmanship, rope knots, and livestock demonstrations among others.
The Polk Woman's Club gathered for its first meeting of the year at Mrs. Lloyd Kroger’s home with Mrs. Carl Steelquist assisting. A brief program featured Mrs. Frank Davis’s educational recap of a western trip, letters from Wm. McGuffin about his Continent journey, and two violin solos by Mrs. Stuermer of Hardville. Hosts served refreshments.
The Women's Foreign Missionary Society met Thursday afternoon in the church parlors. Officers elected include Mrs. Lawrence Sundberg as President, Mrs. Karl Detloff as Vice President, Mrs. W. J. Kroger Recording Secretary, Mrs. Arthur Gustafson Corresponding Secretary, Mrs. Neil Doremus Treasurer, Mrs. Albert Sundberg Standard Bearer Counselor, Mrs. Glen Hill King's Herald Counselor, and Mrs. Irvin Anderson Light Bearer Counselor.
At the regular meeting Monday night the Fire Department elected officers. Chief and Chairman H. G. Brauer, Secretary C. R. Peterson, Treasurer W. C. Steele, Assistant Chief Hilding Strand, all serving the past year. Eleven members attended.
Sheriff Merle Person reports delinquent personal taxes totaling 15056.62 owed by end of August. Sheriff’s office has collected 7773.72 with 7282.90 turned to the County Treasurer. Seven additional deputies aid collection. some cases listed for forced sale despite broad cooperation.
Harry Schultz of Marquette, a former Polk boy, recounts a night when his friend Gilbert Danmhauer was attacked at a filling station. Danmhauer survived a head injury, Wilson died from a chest wound after a shotgun confrontation, and Danmhauer heals as officials investigate.
Polk County Nebraska Red Cross members are urged to attend a meeting on Wednesday September 20 1939 at 8 o clock at the Legion Hall Osceola. County Chairman Chartie Coleman Westenius says funds and work for Red Cross aid in the European War will be discussed and other business will be transacted.
