Polk Fights to Preserve Its 1937 Band

Brauer-Wall Funeral Home Opens at Hampton

Annual Forest Field Day at Halsey Forest

Nebraska residents urged to visit the Nebraska National Forest at Halsey 175 miles northwest of Osceola for the annual forest field day on Sunday September 20. Attendees should bring basket lunches. coffee and drinks provided. A program begins at 1 PM with Polk County farmers invited to bring families and neighbors. Pioneer Woman Sha Green Recalls Early Settlement

Mrs Sha Green of Stromsburg spoke to Howard School last Friday about frontier life starting circa 1870. She described harsh snows prairie fires grasshoppers and Indians as pioneers faced long travel and scarce supplies while building their society.

Commercial Club Holds First Fall Meeting

The Commercial Club held its inaugural fall gathering in the I O O F dining room with many members attending. A Polk German Band performed after the banquet, secrets of school influence were discussed by Carl Steelquist and Superintendent Henry Horstman, and the new coach Ettington introduced the high school football squad. Members debated mail carrier Underhill’s Polk residence, a representative to visit him was appointed, and Polk cleanup day was set for Monday September 21. The board will reconvene on Monday October 12.

Griswold to speak in Polk County Osceola event Sept 24 8 pm

Republican gubernatorial candidate Dwight Griswold will address Osceola on Thursday September 24 at 8:00 p.m. and Polk County on Friday September 25 at 10 a.m. The appearances aim to win support across the region.

A regional meeting of D A R chapters including Elijah Gove Chapter was held at the town hall with a 1 PM luncheon for about sixty ladies at the Hotel dining room. Mrs Arnold Toren presided with principal speakers from Omaha York Columbus David City Osceola and other chapters.

Two Injured in Collision at First National Bank Intersection

James Anderson aged 19 and Donald Nordlund aged 15 were badly hurt when their motorcycle collided with a car driven by Miss Clara Graves at the First National Bank intersection Sunday night. Nordlund suffered a severe cut above the eye and bruising with no fractures. Jim Anderson sustained severe scratches and multiple bruises requiring several days bed rest. Donald Nordlund is the son of Mr and Mrs E C Nordlund of this city.

Arborville Social Roundup Sees Dozens Visit Residents

Mr and Mrs Harry Guidinger hosted York visitors with many relatives from Hordville Oniel and Arborville calling on neighbors. Local trips included Lettie Wochner entering state university in Lincoln and visits by the Ericksons Burgesses and Maurers to relatives and friends across town.

Womens Project Club Meets September 22 in Osceola

Presidents secretaries and social leaders of Polk County womens project clubs are asked to attend the first meeting for the new year on Tuesday September 22 at 10 am in the Osceola courthouse Miss Rizpah Douglass Lincoln home economics specialist will lead the session Any group of five or more women may form a club by adding two project leaders to the officers The leaders must attend all meetings after the first date October 20 and November 17 are fall meetings per the county extension office.

Musics Notes In Polk High School Polished Ensembles

The Polk High School music program shows an organized structure with an advanced orchestra similar to prior years after losing two players and gaining a cello. The Junior Orchestra, a beginners group, has about ten enrollees and meets twice weekly. The Junior glee club has twenty seven freshmen, while the senior glee club totals around thirty five members. Additional small vocal and string ensembles are forming and rehearsing regularly.

Allison 25th wedding anniversary celebrated at home

Mr and Mrs R J Allison hosted about 75 relatives and friends for their 25th anniversary with a male quartet, a humorous reading, and Rev R Bailey presenting a 25 purse. Guests enjoyed a long-table lunch and out of town attendees included Mrs Anna Beckman and the Beckmans of Stromsburg. A Lind family reunion followed at Riverside Park Central City with many relatives in attendance. A farewell reception honored Rev and Mrs Samuel Lee as they left Arborville Congregational Church for Pleasanton.
