Fire at the Arthur Hanken residence south of Polk Sunday evening around seven destroyed the garage and its contents including a 1937 Ford V-8. Neighbors spotted the blaze and Benedict and Stromsburg fire departments saved nearby structures. Partial insurance coverage noted.
Dwight Havens and Captain C J Sanders urged motorists to stop for loading and unloading school buses and watch for children crossing. They stressed preventing a repeat of September fatalities when nine schoolchildren were killed.
Plans are set for a regional rally next Sunday September 14 at the Clarks Methodist Church bringing youth groups from Polk York and Merrick Counties for fellowship inspiration and to form a tri county organization under the Nebraska State Christian Endeavor Union. Rev Dr O W Carrell of Nebraska Central College will lead with music by Prof Robert Strickland and Miss Vivian Loevell of Omaha attends with state officers. All young people and youth groups are invited regardless of denominational affiliation.
Polk Public Schools reports Goldenrod Conference officers elected at Polk High. Junior Band additions include bass horn trombone and flute positions. two bass horns to rent free. Senior Band of 45 eyes busy fall, with invites to Ak Sar-Ben Contest Harvest of Harmony Grand Island and University of Nebraska High School Band Day. First football game September 19 at 8:00 p.m. vs St Bonaventure Columbus at the new athletic field.
September 25 is advised as the safe average date for seeding wheat in Polk County with hopes for three days of drizzle. Fall alfalfa and grasses look unlikely unless weather shifts. seed germination and purity tests require ten days to three weeks. Fall Crops Field Day at Lincoln is planned for September 17 to showcase new crops, practices, and data with inoculation remarks from George Bor. Plan entries for Corn, Grass Seeds, and Small Grains Show and Wheat Show state competition.
Funeral services for Mrs C P Nelson 85 were held at the Baptist Church in Stromsburg on Sunday afternoon. She died Thursday after a lengthy illness. The Nelson family operated the Nelson Clothing Store in Stromsburg, where she had lived for many years.
Preston James Garten son of Maria and James Garten was born April 30 1890 in Plum Center Nebraska and died August 29 1947 at his home in St Edward at age 57. He grew up with sisters Elizabeth and Sadie after his father died when he was eight months old and moved to St Edward where he helped his widowed mother run the farm and worked in the George Sowards store as a teenager.
Osceola hosts and guests from West Los Angeles Inglewood and San Fernando California attend family events and funerals. Local families visit relatives in Lincoln Sioux City and Denver while others mark a baptism at St Vincent’s Church.

The Bureau of Animal Husbandry seeks appropriations to double the Mexican border patrol assigned to stop imports from infected cattle and meat. About 250 patrolmen are on duty. 300 more could be hired if Mexico’s outbreak worsens. Additional costs loom if slaughtering is needed or the disease crosses into northern herds. Department officials view the effort as cattle and sheep insurance.
Mrs Sylvia A Prowett of Osceola suffered severe facial bruises when her motorcycle struck the rear of a Yellow Cab driven by Paul Swanson at Tenth and Burlington last Friday afternoon. She was treated at York General Hospital in York.

October 1 marks the start of the new church school year with September emphasis on religious education and enrollment for all ages. Promotion Rally Day planned with Swede Plain and Polk Church services 10 a m and 11 a m. Youth Fellowship meets Monday evening September 16.
Evangelical Free Church Milford lists Pastor E Olson leading Sunday services including Sunday School 10 a.m. and Morning Worship 11 a.m. Gospel Service 8 p.m. Thursday Bible study and prayer with choir practice. Rev Franzen adds 15th Sunday after Trinity with Morning Worship at 11 a.m. A postcard will be mailed if church services cannot be held in the auditorium.
Miss Dorothy Kisler of Central City visits relatives including Vergil Kisler and Patty. A birthday gathering honors Vergil Kisler. Regional moves include Clarence Lindahl taking a math professorship at Iowa State College in Ames. Various families attend visits and a Lincoln fair. Darwin Newton leaves for York College.
