Picnic at York by Polk Odd Fellows and Rebekahs

On Sunday August 31 the Polk Odd Fellows and their wives and the Rebekahs held a picnic at the Odd Fellows Home in York. Supt Ward and Miss Edith Lancaster guided the group through the Home and yards before they dined in the large dining room. Tables were piled with foods and ice cream provided by the organization. The event was enjoyed by all.

Polk farmer killed in tractor entanglement near Swede Home

Arthur Monson about 50 was killed Friday when he was caught between two operating tractors on the farm he ran with brother Joe near Swede Home. He was found by his wife Mrs. Joe Monson as the machines ran. Funeral services were held Tuesday at the Osceola Methodist Church with burial in Swede Home Cemetery.

Warning issued to watch school children

Dwight Havens of the Nebraska State Safety Council and Captain Sanders issued a joint warning to motorists to be on the lookout for children returning to school. They cited last September’s fatalities of four twelve year olds, four fifteen year olds, and one sixteen year old in traffic accidents to stress caution and prevent a repeat.

Drinking and driving warned by Nebraska safety council

The Nebraska State Safety Council president warns drivers that mixing alcohol with driving endangers many. 17 percent of fatal crashes involved drinking last year. He likens driving under the influence to the unsafe acts of train engineers and bus drivers and urges drivers to be careful, thinking of others on the road.

Tri County Youth Rally at Clarks September 14

Polk York and Merrick County youth societies are invited to send delegations of any size to a youth rally at the Clarks Methodist Church on Sunday afternoon and evening September 14. Sponsored by the Nebraska State Christian Endeavor Union with local promoter Rey Warle Baton of Clarks and Arborville Congregational Churches. Communities are asked to contact Mr. Paton in Clarks to report attendance.

Death Summons P. J. Garten at 57 in St Edward Nebraska

P. J. Garten died at his St Edward Nebraska home on Friday at age 57 after years of failing health due to rheumatic conditions. He operated the Farmers Store in Polk for 19 years boosting low prices and volume. once reputed to have sold more groceries than any small Nebraska town. He moved to St Edward four years ago for semi retirement with his wife Ethel. Survived by his wife, a sister, nieces and nephews. funeral and burial held in St Edward on Monday.

Hebron family escaped as car struck by stalled vehicle

The Robert Gondringer family of Hebron escaped injury when their car collided with a stalled car and trailer near the Osceola Fair Grounds crossing. Gondringer tried to flag the oncoming motor but it pushed the stalled car across the road. the crash recalls a prior fatality at the same crossing.

Injuries Fatal to Former Osceola Druggist

H C Hansen 78 a retired Osceola druggist died after injuries from a fall in his home basement Saturday. He suffered a fractured skull and died at St Francis hospital. Survived by his widow and two daughters Mrs Ralph Mills Redondo Beach California and Mrs Paul Bartunek Knoxville Iowa. Funeral services were held at the Lutheran Church Osceola with burial in Dannebrog Nebraska.

Sevila Webb of Central City and Gerald Branting were married by Rev. G. A. Randall in Osceola on Thursday August 28. The notice also reports the engagement of Constance Saunders Medley to Rev. Edward Earle Eaton of Arborville Congregational Church, with no wedding date set. Eaton has three daughters and his first wife died in 1944.

Noted Evangelist Carl Nelson to Continue Polk Meetings
