The Polk High Cubs start their football season this Friday at Stromsburg with an 8 P.M. kickoff after a time change from 7:30. Coach Gary Warden takes 14 lettermen to face the Vikings while Stromsburg also lists 14 lettermen. The following week the Cubs host St. Edward for the home opener. Weekend guests included Mr and Mrs John Gunnerson of San Jose California and Mrs Evelyn Richards of Clarks staying with the Mervin Shenk home.
The 11th Polk Bean Days drew a large crowd last weekend with a parade picnic barbecue and beans, a tractor pull, children's races and an evening program of local talent. Prizes were awarded in raffles and parades with residents from Stromsburg York Rising City Hardville and local churches among winners.
The First Baptist Church of Polk hosts a 7 P.M. Thursday welcome reception for Pastor Irving Stauffer and his wife Mrs. Stauffer. Attendees include local school teachers, area church pastors, and Rev. Paul Lundgren of the Great Plains Baptist Conference. The Stauffers, natives of Duluth Minnesota, bring long teaching and mission experience.
A Sunday afternoon party honors Mrs Lillie Johnson on her 80th birthday at her home. Attendees include Mr and Mrs Wilmer Rodine, Mr and Mrs Gordon Glad and family, Edwin Glad of Midwest Covenant Home, Mrs Fred Stellars, and Mr and Mrs Roland Rodine and families.
A humorous complaint about kitchen appliance design by men, noting fiddly chrome details, indented dials, removable pans, and inconvenient oven layouts that frustrate women who clean and use stoves, with comic emphasis on how these items invite mess and extra effort.
Open House for Mrs. Antje Stankel of Polk celebrating her 90th birthday on September 13 at Immanuel Lutheran Church from 2 30 to 4 30. Friends and relatives invited. no gifts.
Mrs Dale Carlson was honored at a miscellaneous shower on August 12 at the Horace Stevens home. Colors of yellow and white colored the decorations and lunch, served to schoolmates by Gail Widga and JoAnn Stevens.
