The Polk Bean Days celebration runs September 4th and 5th with a teen dance, R&L Carnival, barbecue beef and beans served at 11 30, an adult and kids parade at 10 30 from the grade school, prizes for parade categories, and events including tractor pulling, races, concerts, a style show and a Pretty Baby Contest. Fatal 50 Foot Fall Kills York Worker at Grafton Elevator
Richard Branting a 20 year old construction worker from York died after a 50 foot fall during an explosion at B H L Grain Co Inc in Grafton. Witnesses say Branting was cutting a distributor on scaffolding when the blast threw him to the ground. Grain dust was listed as the apparent cause, likely ignited by the torch. Elevator manager Ad Kudlacek noted suspended dust is highly dangerous. Branting worked for Neville Construction. the other worker Lynn West was nearby with minor injuries. Funeral services were held at First United Methodist York with burial at Greenwood Cemetery. Additional details reference a prior explosion at the same elevator on April 2, 1970.

Polk War Victim’s Wife To Receive Decorations
Seven military awards will be posthumously presented to Ensign Leonard C. Warnick’s wife, Mrs. Warnick of Polk, on September 3. Captain Herschel A. Pahl of the University of Nebraska Naval ROTC will present the honors. Warnick served in Vietnam from August 1969 until his June 7 death, earning the Bronze Star Medal with Combat V and other decorations.
