Treasure Island rises in San Francisco Bay for 1939 World’s Fair
An island mile long and nearly a mile wide is forming in San Francisco bay between Oakland and San Francisco to host the 1939 Golden Gate World’s Fair. Dredging by 11 machines and 1,000 workers dug 25 million cubic yards of sand to create a 400 acre site raised 18 feet above water and ringed by a three mile seawall. The project will yield a municipal airport after the fair, with a 110 foot causeway linking to the Bay Bridge and parking for 12,000 cars, as tides and currents shift under study by the army engineers and coast survey. Exposition runs February 18 to December 2, 1939, costing 40 million dollars with federal, state, and private funding and expected attendance of 20 million.
