Polk County Commissioners adopted the annual budget for 1947 1948 totaling 221977 dollars. The levy is 3.86 mills, down from 4.40 mills last year, but higher levies in towns and city school districts plus a record state levy negate the cut. Taxpayers may reassess their fall tax receipts.
The home of Mr and Mrs Joe Blin hosted a quiet wedding Wednesday at four oclock as Mrs Mabel Grimes became the bride of Rev O W Roger chaplain at the Soldiers and Sailors Home Grand Island in a ceremony by Rev A Lempke Attendants were Arthur Swedenburg and Mrs Joe Blin The home was decorated with pink and white gladioli and tapers A wedding cake with a miniature bride and groom centered the table Mrs Rogers formerly worked as a nurse at the Soldiers and Sailors Home hospital The couple will be at home to friends in Grand Island after September first
President Sam Crouse reports strong turnout and lively afternoon and evening programs at Polk County Fair. Highlights include 4-H exhibits, baby beef grand champion Jimmy Larson, dress revue winner Merna Lees, crochet and embroidery wins by Guy Fox, and top flower shows led by Osceola judges.
Hordville Baptist Church led by Minister Edrik A. Anderson offers 10:00 Bible School and 11:00 Morning Worship. Hordville Methodist with Pastor Nels Pearson holds Sunday School at 10:00 and Worship at 11:00. The Sweed Home Church lists Sunday School 10:00 Divine Worship 11:00 Bible Study 8:00 p.m. on August 3. Community invited.
Paul Lemke, pastor, leads Church School at 10 00 a m and worship at 11 00 a m. Union service at Polk Bible Camp and midweek prayer Wednesday at 8. Miss Marjorie Hudson, a Conservative Baptist missionary to the Belgian Congo, will speak at the Missionary Society meeting and in the evening of September 11.
Rev Bates reports union services at Polk Bible Camp with revival meetings. Sunday schedule lists Swede Plain Morning Worship at 10 and Church School at 11, Polk Church School at 10 and Morning Worship at 11. Thursday September 4 features Youth Fellowship.
Mitford E Olson pastor leads Sunday worship at 10 am with Sunday School at 114 am and another service at 7 pm. Gospel service at Polk Bible atop Tuesday gatherings feature Rey Cari W Nelson of Grind Island as speaker. Meetings catch evening except Saturday.
The Arborville Church announces Sunday School at 10:00 AM led by Superintendent Mrs Harold Bedient and Divine Worship at 11:15 AM with sermon The Unknown God and sermonette God Is Now Here. Floyd Merchant conducts the choir with Mrs Wayne Lindholm as accompanist.
Polk County saw a welcome rain Sunday ending weeks of drought and heat. About 0.55 inch fell across the area with some spots higher. Forecast for the week ends August 23 shows temperatures in the upper 90s and low 100s with lows in the 70s.
Mr. and Mrs Herbert Wurtz hosted an open house for 25 years of marriage with about 125 relatives and friends attending. A short program featured Thede Larson, Rev Paul Lemke, and performances by Haggart, Aker, Alyce Wurtz, Nancy Wurtz, and the Lindbergs. Out of town guests included A A Wurtz family, Alyce Wurtz, Scholtz, Wallace Johnson, and Donald Haggart.

The 4-H Junior Fair awarded 41 blue ribbons 122 red and 10 white across livestock and crops with 485 entries. Grand Champion beef steer went to Jimmy Larson, Reserve to Richard Peterson. top dairy was Jimmy Larson, Reserve Donald Fillinger. Swine, sheep and crops tests earned multiple blue and red ribbons for Peterson, Peterson, Tooker, and others. Parade featured five sections with leaders naming Pla tte Valley Saddle Club and crop clubs. awards for girls to be printed next week.
Mr and Mrs John Stohs moved to Crofton Nebraska with family while Miss Janice Sundberg returns from Adams. Mr and Mrs Charles Dahlgren return from a Dakotas trip. Mervin Branting and York guests visit the Petersons. Wurtz and Daniel join Sunday dinner at the Wohl home in Hampton. Oscar Jones and Neil McNaught visit Omaha on business. Henry Sandell hosts a picnic with Rodine families, Krause kin, Sundbergs, Sundbergs and Sandell neighbors from Adams and Adams area.
Polk County reports solid Savings Bond activity for January through June 1947. Total Series E sales reach 566 961 09 dollars while FE F and G total 852 711 00 dollars. Redemptions of C D and EE amount to 109 55 00. Per cent of sales to redemptions and maturities stands at 7 78. Per capita sales are 97 48 dollars, placing county high among state peers. Statewide average per capita sales for the period is 63 38 dollars.

NEA tour had twenty eight teachers traveling by bus along the Pan American Highway and a 300 mile detour through farming regions. Edmund Lunner arrives from Hartford for a visit with his mother Mrs. E. Luner. Sunday luncheon guests at Ray Stover’s include the Julians of York and Garvey and Garvey families of Lincoln plus others from Stockton California.
Doris Walshuse Rosella Walshuse and Ruth Ziegelben joined the Walter League annual convention in Fremont over the weekend. Delegates Marvin Schulze and Vr and Mrs Carl Wilshusen of York and Mr and Mrs Alton Duewer of Bradshaw also attended. Nearby relatives and residents from Omaha Lincoln and Washington D C shared visits and travel plans amid family events and extended stays across multiple states.
Baseball fans in Stromsburg will see former big leaguer Mickey Owen catch for Stromsburg against Geneva next Sunday night at Buckley Park. Owen, renowned as one of the greatest catchers, will bat and handle the St. Louis Cardinals and Brooklyn Dodgers legacy. The game starts at 8:30 p m.
A Polk veterinarian Dr. R L Peterson was seen relaxing in his yard on a hot day. Neighbors report he used a spray of water and cool air to stay refreshed, suggesting the method could help others cope with heat.
Robert J Strickland of Clarks is awarded the Master of Arts degree in Educational Administration at the Colorado State College of Education summer commencement. The ceremony conferred degrees upon 233 graduates, held August 14 in Greely Colorado.
The Polk County Artificial Insemination Association announced prize winners from the Birthday Guessing Contest held at the County Fair. Mervin Ransom Sr. of Shelby took 1st prize of 500 dollars, Edna Peterson of Osceola won 2nd prize of 3 dollars, and Robert Dickson of Stromsburg claimed 3rd prize of 2 dollars. A test tube calf born May 1 at 5:00 AM belonged to Lavelle Lamoree of Osceola, a director of the association. Over 800 ballots were cast.
Claude Merlin Colby formerly of this community died of a heart attack in Plattsmouth. Funeral services were held there Saturday August 23 with burial in Young cemetery. Born July 6 1890 near Anchorville he married Goldie Mae Elliott September 7 1918 at Omaha and had four children. He leaves his wife four children a granddaughter two sisters a brother and many relatives and friends. Locals Mr and Mrs George Colby and daughter and Mr and Mrs Noster Scott attended.
Miss Lois Cockle of Lincoln and Harvey Sorensen of Hardyville were married Sunday at the G W Randahl home with Rev Chindvall officiating. The ceremony was attended by 45 guests, followed by a reception and toasts. The couple will reside in Lincoln after September 17.
