Kiddies Free Circus On Main Street Saturday Night

A Kiddies Free Circus will perform on Polk's main street on a platform at 9 o'clock Saturday night September 5th. Sponsored by local businessmen the admission is free for children. Organizers promise entertaining acts and a family friendly show.

Polk County Fair closes after one-day event

The fifty seventh Polk County Fair ended Saturday night due to rain. Officials deem it a success with lower admission prices and high standard exhibits. While not profitable, it is expected to pay out, thanks to strong management and a commendable program despite the weather.

Swede Home community notices and gatherings

The Swede Home Dorcas group meets in church parlors Friday evening. Luther League gathers Thursday evening with Mrs Ester Johnson and Mrs Rudolph Sandin hosting. A birthday and farewell party for Mrs Coffin was hosted by Mr and Mrs Coffin as they prepare to move to Rising City. Numerous families attended Osceola Park picnics in greeting visiting Orlie Anderson and Miss Irma Vogelsong. Various visits and errands noted among local residents including trips to Grand Island, Columbus, and Pawnee Park.

Apple Tree Blooms After Summer Watering

Louis Hastert of Shelby tended an old apple tree despite grasshoppers stripping its leaves. His regular watering continued through the hot summer, and this morning the tree stood in full bloom.

Mrs Reynold H Bottom and daughters of Randolph Kansas Mr Harry Shafer and son of Emporia Kansas Mrs Stanley Cooper of York and Mrs Lynn D Horrocks of Omaha visited in the A W Shafer home. Amos and Harry Shafer and Miss Maxine Bottom spent Tuesday in Ord visiting the Harlan Frazier family. Mr and Mrs Walter Grobe and family of Benedict were dinner guests of Mr and Mrs J L Stouffer Sunday. Mr and Mrs Oscar Jones spent Sunday in the W A Wurtz home. Mrs Ansel Lindquist was taken to Grand Island Hospital Saturday for medical care. Mr and Mrs David Dornburga and Mr and Mrs Dan Graves were Central City visitors Sunday.

Last of Polk County pack peddler dies at 78

Old Mons Person, famed last of the pack peddlers who sold pins thread and news to Midwest farm homes, died Saturday at University Hospital. A Polk County resident with roots in Hordville and Om aha, he spent decades traveling with two suitcases until age and weight slowed him. The county funded his body’s return for burial as he had no relatives. About 250 attended his Fridden Lutheran church funeral in Hordville.

Life Saving Test Complete At Osceola Pool

Ruth Brown of the American Red Cross supervised a life saving test Saturday morning at the Osceola Swimming Pool. Six of eight participants completed the course with two aiming to retake later. Senior Course qualifiers were Fred Green Alvin Anderson and Mrs Marguerite Hartman. Junior Course qualifiers were Robert Mills Fredric McFadden and Lester Peters. Thirty-one beginners and twenty-eight swimmers have been reported as completing tests by pool staff.

Blase Family Reunion at York Park

A Blase family reunion was held at the Park at York on Sunday with a picnic dinner for about fifty guests.
