August Johnson of Turlock California writes that he and other former residents wish to renew their subscription for 1938 and have moved to Irwin California sending a money order. He asks that future issues be sent to Box 144 Irwin. The letter expresses they do not want to miss their hometown newspaper.
Motorists are warned by Sovereign Service Stations operator Cramer Oil Co. to winterize cars now. The Polk Progress carries the "Jack Frost" campaign urging fall service including winter lubricants, antifreeze, battery work, full lubrication and winter gasoline for safer, trouble free driving.
The Polk Seo faculty enjoyed a 6 p.m. dinner at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Hill on Thursday evening in honor of Miss Ida Taylor and Mr. Harold Wilcox. The table featured yellow and pink tea roses and blue delphiniums with yellow tapers. The evening was spent socially.
Polk Fire Department rushed to the Lindburgs farm house one mile north of town Sunday just before noon to put out a roof fire. Firefighters arrived in time to halt the blaze causing only minor damage and a small roof hole. Officials believe sparks from the furnace started the fire.
Mr and Mrs R L Smith announce the marriage of their daughter Millie to Zeno Mackay of Scottsbluff Nebraska on July 24 in Scottsbluff. The bride, Polk High School class of 84 alumna, attended Lincoln School of Commerce beside university graduate groom. They will live in Scottsbluff where the groom works.
A miscellaneous shower honored Mrs. Eleanor Larson a recent bride at her parents home. A Mock Wedding staged with Mrs. Herman McBride as the bride and Miss Mary Rice as the bridegroom officiated by Mrs. Asa Smith. Guests shared recipes and advice over lunch of sandwiches pickles coffee cake and fruit salad.
Eleanor Carlson and Gerhard Hallgren Jr. wed at eight Saturday evening in the Evangelical Covenant Church. Attendants included Mrs. Ruby Ahlburg and Miss Jean Smythberg. Theodore Hallgren served as best man. A reception for 175 followed. couple to reside in Chicago.
Mrs Elmer Allen of Cal Nebraska Miss Emily Allen and Mrs John Knipping of Nora Nebraska visited in the home of Mr and Mrs F W Davis over the weekend. Mrs Allen extended her stay while Harlan Johnson Ray Phillips and Lloyd Adelson from Rock Island Illinois spent a week visiting relatives. George Erickson Herndon Kansas and sister Matilda Erickson remained for longer visits with Roland Dahlin family.
Hordville and nearby towns report visits to Comstock Grand Island Hastings Stromsburg and Lincoln. Numerous host families welcomed guests including Erickson Gustafson and Nelson families with church events B Y P A meetings and Halloween programs. A large turnout attended a Ne gro chorus concert in Central City and various family visits occurred through the week.
Sunday afternoon visitors included Mr. and Mrs. C. N. Peterson and family and Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Johnson with Harlan and Miss Margaret Riddlemoser of Central City. Also present were Mr. and Mrs. David Carlson and son Bud of Fremont. Dinner guests were Mr. and Mrs. Frank Bolton and family at Benedict with Ralph and family.
The Walther Leagues in zone 8 held their annual fall rally at Viking Hall in Poli on Sunday October 24. Rev O Pittack Lexington delivered the sermon and remarks on the Detroit Convention followed. About 275 members registered and over $00 attended. Plans for an Officers Conference on December 5 at Gresham were announced. Four choral Union numbers, a vesper at 6:30, and a three act play Where's Grandma sponsored by Polk League completed the event.
The Poll High School auditorium was packed Friday night for the first School Night program of the year. Readings talks musical numbers and one act plays featured students and invited parents for closer ties and better understanding.
A gasoline transport truck driven by George Kyser of Bellville Kansas jackknifed and crashed into the east side of the Sandine Oil Station five miles west of Osceola on Highway 16. The impact caved the wall and toppled the building. Mrs Sandine and her young daughter were frightened but uninjured. The stock truck still on Highway 39 avoided collision. Damage to the station was about 100 dollars covered by liability insurance. the transport was damaged as well.
Mesdames Holmes Hennie Sey mour Backstrom and A G Glad and Edith spent Wednesday afternoon with Mrs Lloyd Burnworth. Mr and Mrs Ralph Chapman and family of Fairfield spent Sunday with Mr and Mrs Floyd Morris and family. Mr and Mrs George Anderson and daughter were evening guests.
Mr and Mrs Reynold Peterson visited with the latter s parents Mr and Mrs Clair Willits Sunday. The Women s Missionary Society will meet in the church parlors on a sunny afternoon November 3. Several local families hosted guests including Oscar Fredrickson and Nick Gerdes homes. The Swede Home Ladies Club met at Mrs George Anderson s home Tuesday. The T C W Club plans to meet at Mrs Carl Johnson s home October 28. Various local residents hosted and visited relatives and attended events at Polk Benedict Lincoln and nearby towns.
Mr and Mrs Karl Wetloff visited their daughter Mrs Fred Barizatt in Lincoln Sunday. The Detloff home hosted guests Thursday evening including Mr and Mrs Reynold Klute and Mr and Mrs Carl Dose. Mrs Ted Janky and baby girl born October 25th. Mrs Janky formerly Miss Alice Carlson. Mrs Janky and baby staying with sister Mrs Claus Oberg. Mrs A L Brobst and Mildred of Benedict visited Mrs A K Crow and family. Friends visited Fern Johnson in Grand Island Hospital.
Vern Capilli of Omaha leases the Morgan building formerly occupied by Lou Israel and plans a wholesale ice cream factory. Lincoln-bound Superintendent L E Wilson attends District 1 Teachers Convention, presenting a study of leading high schools in Michigan Minnesota Nebraska. Local residents travel to Lincoln for church events and family visits. a car collision between Osceola and Shelley caused minor damage. retirements and job changes occur at area businesses. a 76th birthday reunion is planned for Mrs. Buchta.
Polk County Womens Clubs hold their annual convention at the M E Church in this city on Friday October 29 with sessions beginning at 10 A M A luncheon will be served at noon and the afternoon will continue the business program and social activities Public is invited to attend.
Davis Pharmacy plans a four day one cent sale starting Wednesday drawing shoppers from Polk and beyond. The event offers buy one original item at regular price then get a second for 1 cent, appealing to all ages. Look for the ad on another page.
Mr and Mrs Frank Cohagen move to Albert Reed place in south Polk. Dramatic Club of Poll High School held Halloween party at the school house Mon Chester Ship of Omaha visited here earlier. Mr Lawrence Fusby of Portland Oregon visited in the Thesing home with relatives. Mr and Mrs J L Stouffer transacted business in Omaha. Pat Crow and son Sid report strong pheasant hunting season with several limits. LeRoy Moderow of Seward visited his parents over the weekend.
Senior class members and Miss Pearson hosted a Hallowe en party at the school with games and prize awards. Fifth and sixth graders and Miss Taylor held a Halloween Masquerade at the high school gym with games prizes and a lunch. Wreatha Green dressed as a tramp won first prize.
A Friday evening party at Mr and Mrs Ernest Nierman celebrated Mrs Nierman's birthday. Attendees included Mr and Mrs Ewald Klingsporn and family of Arborville, Mr and Mrs Ed Klingsporn and daughter, Mr and Mrs Roy Heiden and family of Benedict, Linda Nierman of Seward, and Norma Nierman. The event featured social visiting and a bounteous luncheon served by most of the invited guests.
County Agent F B Kelly announces a Nov 10 program at Osceola High School Auditorium featuring the all talking film Under the 4 H Flag plus a 4 H news reel an educational short Hidden Values and a cartoon. Admission is free with a nationwide attendance contest offering 2000 in prizes. county winner gets 1000 for 4 H activities.
The Annual County Meeting in Shelby October 19 at U B Church was chaired by Mrs. John Lucas. District President Mrs Novak and speakers Mrs Mizera and others attended. Delmar McFadden of Osceola led the initiation and was elected next year’s chairwoman with Osceola set to host.
W F Cohagen will hold a sale Friday November 4 at his place 1 1 2 miles west and 1 mile south of Hordville. Six head horses six head cattle two hogs one sheep farm machinery and household goods listed. On Wednesday November 10 Carl and August Anderson offer five horses and mules plus farm machinery. Col Kenneth Samuels of Hordville to cry both sales with R C Gustafson of Hordville as clerk. Polk Progress printed the bills.
Mr and Mrs Wallace Sandell and son along with Mr and Mrs F W Fost berg and Goldie and Gordon visited Columbus Sunday. Axel Renquist Benedict and Ella Shenk spent Wednesday with Mrs Hennie Seymour. R J Peterson and sons Mrs Harry Carlson and daughter and Arlene Runquist were in Grand Island Sunday. Miss Fisher Stromsburg visited Miss Dorothy Pearson. Ausdemberg Marysville spent Thursday evening with Mr and Mrs E P Moderow.
