Crowell Publishing Company representatives exposed C. R. Post for forging subscriber names on checks for magazine subscriptions. He allegedly forged signatures locally and in other towns. no local losses were recorded and subscriptions were canceled, but the firm lost commission payments.
Miss Margaret Riddlemoser daughter of Mr and Mrs C W Riddlemoser Central City and Harlan E Johnson son of Mr and Mrs O E Johnson Polk were wed on a Wednesday afternoon October 27 at Rev R R Richards Grand Island Nebraska The couple were attended by Mr and Mrs David Eckdahl Polk A reception for relatives and friends followed at the bride’s parents home Those present included O F E Johnson Dave Eckdahl John Riddlemoser family Cambridge and Robert Edgar Schuyler They received a golden taffeta bed spread and a picture from the Central City Baptist Church The couple departed Sunday for Rock Island Illinois to reside indefinitely.
The Polk County Fair Annual Meeting will be held at the Court House in Osceola on November 10 at 2 p m. All with season or Life Membership tickets are members. Three directors will be elected. Jay Hastings Secretary of Poll Co Fair Association.
Dr L W Elwood plans to close his practise in Silver Creek and take a government position as camp surgeon at the forest reserve CCC camp in Halsey Nebraska in late November. Friends regret his departure but wish him success. He has not yet sold his pract ice but intends to do so.
Four youths pleaded guilty before Municipal Judge A W Shafer to driving at unlawful speed in Polk city limits. Arlo Stevens LeRoy Beckstrom Ivan Cramer and Lee Morris were arrested Saturday by village marshal Ralph Upton. They were fined one dollar and costs. all but Lee Morris chose to serve their sentence in the city jail until Friday if fines are unpaid. It was a second offense for some.
Mrs Theo Moberg of Clarks died Monday evening at a hospital in Omaha after a short illness. Funeral services are set for Thursday at 2 at Swede Plain Church. Survived by husband Theo Moberg and four sisters, all of Polk. Obituary to follow next week.
Local businesses will close at noon on November 11th for Armistice Day. Filling stations and drug stores will remain open to serve the public’s needs.
Nebraska Red Cross shows a 3600 member increase to 46770 with plans to lift totals in 101 state chapters during the Armistice Day to Thanksgiving Roll Call. First aid training reached 2147 Nebraskans and 776 joined. 133 emergency stations operate or near completion along highways. Fundraising totaled 208309 for Ohio Mississippi flood refugees and aid. Roll Call starts November 11 under Olive McBeth with Polk County aiming 400 members.
The Pork Women's Club gathered at Mrs Carl Steelquist home on Tuesday November 2 with Mrs Lawrence Sundberg as hostess. Mrs Pauli Strand led the program focusing on Nebraska Indiana. Mrs Dc R Peterson sang a vocal solo and a luncheon was served by the hostesses.
The Citizens State Bank joins with banks in Polk County to close Friday November 5 to allow staff to attend the State Bankers Convention. See advertisement on another page of this issue.
Lloyd Adelson and Joseph Fjell left for Illinois to seek work. The Swede Home Dorcas Society will perform a program in the church parlors Sunday evening. Miriam Chorus of Swede Home sang at the Lutheran Church in Osceola Sunday. Lawrence Lind welcomed a baby boy born Monday, November 1.
The Swede Plain Ladies Aid will meet in the church parlors November 10 with Mesdames Orlie Adelson and Oscar Johnson as hostesses and Mrs. Willard Adelson as program leader. Also notes visitations: Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Shockey and family from Wyoming arrived Sunday to visit relatives, Ralph Shafer of Grand Island visited, Lloyd Lind was in York, and E. A. Sodergren of Central City was a business visitor Tuesday.
Edward Larson, a clerk at City Grocery and Market, was bitten on the leg by a large tarantula found in a crate of bananas. He received first aid from Dr. Westfall and continued working that night. Six spiders were later killed from the same banana case.
A Sunday afternoon reception was hosted at the home of Mrs Flodman in pink and white decor. The program featured piano and vocal solos, a violin piece, a reading, and a short talk by Mr Ralph Flodman, with numerous gifts given to the honored couple by family and friends from nearby towns.
The Polk County Farm Bureau will hold its annual meeting Tuesday November 9 in the Osceola Legion Hall. N W Gaines state extension service speaker at Lincoln will give the principal address. All farmers and friends are invited to attend the all day session with a basket lunch and free coffee.
A. K. Crow visited Clarks Sunday afternoon while Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Stouffer and daughter Ruth joined Sunday dinner at the home of Mr. and Mrs. C. F. Stouffer in York.
A neighbor described as unreliable and immoral is criticized for evading duties, finances, work, and social norms. He is odd in views on liquor, though noted to come from a good family. Despite flaws, the piece ends by portraying him as “our new baby.”
Plans and preparations for the Fireman's Banquet at Viking Hall on Tuesday evening November 5th are nearing completion. The 6 30 program includes music and speeches and honors Fire Chief Brauer who has led the department for over twenty seven years. All members and honorary members are expected to attend along with several guests. It is expected to be the largest social function in the history of the department.
Miss Mae Doremus daughter of Mr and Mrs Neal Doremus wed Mr Gerhart Dose son of Mr and Mrs Adolph Dose in a ceremony conducted by Rev E E Pengelly at the Polk Methodist Church parsonage on Sunday October 24. Attendants were Miss Nannie Carlson and Jas Doremus. The couple plan a short wedding trip and then reside on a farm northwest of Polk.
Mr. and Mrs. Robert McNeely of Loma were Sunday guests in the home of Mr. and Mrs. N. McNeely. Columbus visitors included Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Wurtz and Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Jones and family. George Otte and son visited Delvin Newton at the W. J. Newton home in Goehner. Betty Newton and Garrah Newton of Goechner spent the weekend with Mr. and Mrs. Donald Newton. Sid Crow went to Utica for new employment.
Miss Louise and Richard Henkel hosted a dinner Sunday in honor of the 25th wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Otto Ueckert and the 2nd anniversary of Donald Ray Pohl. Guests included Carl Pohl and son of Olpe Kansas and many relatives from Wood River Shelton Bradshaw and Bradshaw area observations.
The regular monthly meeting of the Polk Commercial Club will be held in the I C O F Dining Hall next Monday evening November 8 at 6 30. The menu will be Oyster Stew. Several out of town guests will attend along with the football team and their coach. All members and friends are invited. Howard W Herbes Secy.
Emma Dedrickson Johnson 90, longtime Polk County resident, died at home in Stromsburg after a stroke. Born January 11, 1847 in Kalmar Lan Smaland Sweden she immigrated in 1868 and married Godfrey Johnson the same year. Surviving are three daughters and three sons, plus a sister. Funeral services Thursday at Evangelical Covenant Church, Stromsburg, with Rev. Simon Carlson officiating.
Mrs. Lloyd Lind entertained a group of Stromsburg ladies at her home on Saturday afternoon in honor of her grandmother Mrs. C O Johnson who marked a birthday anniversary. Attendees included Mesdames Karl Karlson Emil Johnson Lillian Andresen Ben Stromberg Phillip Johnson Lois and Henry Shostrom. The afternoon was social and refreshments were served by the hostess.
Miss Marion Olson daughter of Mr and Mrs Ernest Olson of Valley married Earl Steele son of Mr and Mrs Edwin Steele also of Valley. Rev Roy Larson of Valley Baptist Church presided under an improvised arch with a white bell and tall tapers. The couple were attended by Miss Lillian Steele and Lesley Olson with Betty Lee Steele as ringbearer. The bride wore blue crepe and carried a bouquet. The couple will live in Omaha after a breakfast reception for both families.
A Polk County Men's School meeting will be held at the M. E. Church November 15. A business meeting and a round table discussion will be held. The program includes music by the high school music department readings by the dramatic club and a chalk talk by Miss Pearson.
The Country Womans Club gathered at Mrs Bill Kingsley home with Mrs Elmer Sandburg assisting. Fourteen members and five visitors attended. Readings by Mrs Dick Sealey and Miss Marjorie Pierson highlighted the afternoon followed by a two course luncheon. The next meeting is planned for November with Mrs Ollie Johnson.
In Stromsburg the large Hunsaker property owned by Ray Hunsaker is being torn down this week to make way for two smaller up to date houses built from the lumber of the old residence. Also noted is Mrs Eric Erickson’s transfer to an Osceola hospital for medical treatment and several local social visits and events including church evangelistic meetings and a Mayo Clinic medical exam for Paul Moore.
Bids opened Friday for the Polk County School District No 72 project with nine bidders for the general contract. York Mill & Supply Co. won at 18796. Heating and plumbing went to Edward Rodwell of Omaha for 3840 and Edward Fuehrer of Central City won the electrical bid at 733.41. Government approval and bonding required. two weeks for action. Local labor to be used when possible with registration for local workers.
Mr and Mrs L P Jones of Grand Island celebrate their Golden Wedding Anniversary with a dinner hosted by Mr and Mrs Harold Jones in Hordville next Sunday November 7 Open House for friends at 2 pm allowing visits to offer congratulations only immediate relatives attend the dinner.
The Swede Plain Local No. 1115 votes to hold its annual meeting at Viking Hall Polk on Wednesday November 10 at 7 PM An oyster supper will precede the business meeting and entertainment Music provided by the Poll German Band featuring Dr Curt Pete Hood Allison Albert Sundberg and Carl Steelquists Moving pictures from the Co operative movement in Europe will be shown by Henry Negley of the State Union
Carl and August Anderson in northeast Hordville plan a sale on Wednesday November 10 listing five horses and mules plus farm machinery. A. W. Erickson locates one mile west and one and a half miles south of Hordville for a sale on Monday November 8 with two Jersey cows a spotted Poland China boar and a large stock of feed and farm equipment. Col Kenneth Samuels serves as auctioneer for both events.
John N. Norton of Polk, a U. S. Employee and state legislator, met Gov. Cochran in the governor’s private office. Reporters pressed him on running for governor or re election. he dodged the question and said he remains employed by the federal department of agriculture, though not all the time.
