The Stouffer family near Arborville organized a pleasant surprise for Mr. and Mrs. Clark Stouffer marking their forty fifth anniversary on Tuesday October 25. Attendees included J. L. Stouffer, F. B. Slusser, Ralph Fisher and family, Ralph Stouffer of Benedict, C. F. Stouffer and kin, Marvin Ives of York, Bailey Stouffer and son of Bradshaw, and Dorothy Stouffer of York. A mock wedding with Ralph Fisher as the bashful bride and Dorothy Stouffer as the groom provided entertainment.
Rev. Ralph Nelson from Nebraska City arrives to lead a revival series at the Baptist Church. Services start at 7 45 each evening except Saturday and run through Sunday November 6. An invitation is extended to all to attend and seek guidance from God.
The J. G. Felton Pharmacy ends operations in Utica after three years serving the community. Jim Felton has taken a drug store job in Omaha starting Monday. Mrs Felton and the children will stay briefly then move to Omaha in a couple weeks. bankruptcy filings were made by Mr Felton.
Harry Peterson learned that his sister Mrs Theodore Madsen of Cotesfield died at an Omaha hospital. Formerly Amelia Peterson, she grew to womanhood in the community. Funeral services were held at Cotesfield Wednesday with interment there. Survivors include her husband and two sons Ralph Wright and Teddy Madsen of Cotesfield, four brothers Mary Polk Lawrence Clarks Oscar William and Elmer of Big Springs.
Miss Alice Lamoree of Stromsburg and Lyle Dickson of Benedict wed at the Benedict Lutheran parsonage Friday evening. The couple, both with local schooling backgrounds, plan to live with the groom’s parents. Local attendees included Lavelle Lamoree and family as witnesses.
A county wide Republican rally was held in Stromsburg with an outdoor plan moved to Scott Hall due to weather. Speakers included T W Bass for State Treasurer Ray C Johnson for State Auditor Richard O Johnson and Herman Wellensick. Col R G Douglas traveled from Valentine and campaigned with Charles J Warner. Lunch was served by county committee women at the First National Bank Building.
Polk county farmers face November 19 as the payment deadline for 1939 wheat crop premiums. ACP chairman Robert Taddiken announced the date after state committee confirmation. Delinquent farmers risk losing insurance on their 1939 yields. remaining applications must reach the Kansas City office by October 25.
Effective October 20 Union Pacific begins east from Grand Island and west from Lincoln daily except Sunday. Grand Island freight leaves 4:00 a.m. arrives Lincoln 10:30 a.m. Return departs Lincoln 2:30 p.m. for Grand Island. Livestock can be loaded late for shipment to Omaha Chicago via Central City.
The Village Board and Polk Volunteer Fire Department plan to remodel the old Progress building on Main Street into the home for a soon to be purchased fire truck. Workmen may start remodeling shortly with a new floor roof and large street exit door. The fire committee has met with major suppliers and will choose a truck soon, marking another forward step for Polk.
Carl Cederburg of Osceola was elected President of the district Farmers Union at the York convention last Wednesday. Frank Swanson of Stromsburg was named Vice President and T A Collins of Wahoo Secretary and Treasurer. Polk County led with 24 delegates. speakers included H G Keeney of Omaha and Fred Hagge of Grand Island. In attendance from Osceola were Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Boden and daughter Francis, Mr. and Mrs. Mark Timm, and Carl Cederburg.
The M. E. Ladies Aid gathered in church parlors on Thursday with hostesses P. J. Garten W. J. Johnson Clarence Peterson and Paul Strand guiding a fine afternoon. A vocal duet by Mrs. Floyd Miller and Mrs. Lawrence Sundberg a slot machine talk by Mrs. Ross Goet he and a short ballot discussion led by Mrs. McCoy plus Rev Pengelly on the state bank amendment framed the program. A guessing game entertained the 65 attendees who enjoyed a lovely lunch.

Halloween party hosted by District 81 pupils with Mildred Ebert. James Pickrel St York visit. York guests dine with Floyd Merchant family. Chas Dahlgren weekend visitors include Gullion Schless and Allen from Lincoln. Grant Johnson weekend at Yutan with Clark Snodgrass. Lincoln group including Noble Schmidt Williams Wick and Julia Ann visit Mrs Charles Flick. Frank Wilcox York visit. Maud Wilcox returns home with them.
The Polk County Cornhusking contest at Arthur Morrill farm last Friday October 20 drew about two thousand people as 500 cars lined the field. Marvin Mace won with 17.39 bushels earning 20 dollars, Kenneth Monson 10 dollars for 17.03 bushels, and Elmer Berger 16.36 bushels to take third. others received one dollar apiece from the Stromsburg Community Club.
Those from the local school who will attend the teachers convention at Omaha this week are Supt. Henry Horstman Dorothy Pearson Lauren Biffar Robert Strickland and Ida Taylor. The following will attend the convention at Lincoln Harold Wilcox Maggie Christensen La Verne Fredrickson Bruce Gowgill and Ferne Schweitzer.
Rev. Paul Carlson, pastor for three years, resigns and will give a farewell sermon this Sunday at the Free Mission Church. He and Mrs. Carlson plan to move November 1 to Anandale Minnesota to make their future home, leaving the vacancy unfilled for now.

Peter Akeson was born in Lindryd Sweden on March 4 1865 and died Sunday night at age 73 years 7 months and 19 days. He lived in Polk County since 1900 after stints in Minnesota and Sweden. He never married and leaves no immediate relatives. only nephews in Sweden.
