Polk county observers say the 1945 corn crop will yield about ten bushels per acre less than last year but will be of better quality. Husking starts in a few days as farmers ready huskers and improve storage with many corn cribs under construction to prevent spoilage from past seasons.

The pastor conducts a Sunday morning service at 10 00 am with church school led by Winnie Lind. Worship includes a sermon on Our Denomination as part of a series, followed by an evening service at 7 30 pm beginning a new series on St Peter. A Wednesday prayer service is set for 7 30 pm at Mrs Linnea Shefer's home.
The Nebraska Conference youth officers plan a York conference on October 26-27. Hastings District Rally is November 4 at First Methodist Hastings from 7 to 9 pm. Swede Plain Youth Mellowood meets at Lennis Lind’s home Monday at 7 30 pm. Swede Plain holds morning worship at 10 am and church school at 11 am. Polk schedule lists church school at 10 am and worship at 11 am with evening service at 7 30 pm.

Arborville residents hosted callers and gatherings at homes including the Fisher and Reckner families. A Town Hall Club program featured plans for a Black Wood Quartet appearance on October 30. Polk County is assigned a $282,000 Victory Loan Drive quota with $192,000 in series E and calls for community cooperation to meet it.
Davis Pharmacy launches the RexaN one cent sale beginning Wednesday at two for the price of one plus one cent. Much new merchandise unobtainable since the war began will be offered with values up to a dollar and more for an item when another is bought at regular price. Look for the large ad elsewhere in this issue.
Mrs Virgil Flodman and son plus relatives visited Hordville including Miss Darlene Lam shire and the Blase, Rodine, Nanquist, Jones, Wurtz, and Fredrick households. The Whitacre Gospel Team led the evening service at the local Baptist Church with violin, accordion, horn, and vocal numbers.

Mr and Mrs J W Bailey and Lois travel to Grandfield Oklahoma for ten days with relatives. Lt Helen E Falk, daughter of Mr and Mrs John A Falk, returned home after Army Nurse service. Rodney Anderson USNR arrives from Ann Arbor for a 19 day leave. Ansel Graves, former Stromsburg Bank employee, visits, plans to return to Fort Morgan Colorado with family. Ruth Ida Shustrum Hazel Sundberg Annette Larson Dorothy Johnson attend Youth for Christ in Lincoln. Numerous guests hosted by John George family in Gresham. Frequent gatherings involve the Rystrom and Anderson families and others visiting from Polk Benedict York Telephone Texas and Wessington Springs. Ed Lauerman returns to Wessington Springs after weekend in York and Stromsburg.
The Stromsburg Hospital announces shortened visiting times in the fore noon and limits visits to the mother and baby for the first three days. No child under fourteen may visit unless a mother’s own child, and only immediate family may visit. Telephone calls should be kept brief to aid patient care. May Stahly, Sup’t.
Thursday evening Mr and Mrs Oscar Stromberg hosted a group including Mrs O Keehn of Milwaukee Wisconsin Mrs Geneva Johnson of Los Angeles Mrs Martha Carpenter and son Navy man Max Maguire of Kansas City plus Mrs John Scott and Mrs Ben Keck of Lincoln. Captain and Mrs Jay Cook of Thompsonville Michigan visited Ester Lackey home en route to California. On Sunday the Strombergs with Mrs Imma Peterson and Clara spent the day at John George home in Gresham for S Set Arnold George wife and baby. Warolld Baker and Tola of Fairmont also joined.
In a regular session on May 15 1945 the County Commissioners abolished the County Poor Farm and authorized its operation as a private boarding home for the aged by Mr and Mrs Bruce Pickett who had leased the farm for five years and renewed their lease March 1 1945. They applied for a state license and have been inspected by the State Fire Department Health Department and the Nursing Home Consultant. The home has received a license to operate as Social Center Rest Home and the Welfare Department invites inquiries from others wishing to run similar facilities for aged persons.
Mr and Mrs Howard Herhes visited Omaha over the weekend. Mr and Mrs Victor Larsen visited Chas Johnson's home Sunday evening. Clarence Rodine of Hordville and Wil mer Rodine with family joined Reuben Hanquist's dinner guests Sunday. Donald Hanquist and baby also attended. Bert Warnick hosted a brief stop by Mrs Oxley and Mrs Dan Ice of Green River Wyoming en route to Illinois. Leonard Warnick enjoyed a home cooked meal with his parents after receiving an honorable discharge from the Army. Roy Garretson and son Wesley of Haxton Colorado visited relatives last week. Dr Dana Westfall and son from Nebraska City arrived Friday for a visit with Martha Westfall, then hunted pheasants in Springview Ned before returning to Polk and Nebraska City.
Miss Bonna Vea Brion daughter of Mr and Mrs fe W Brion of Denver married Alvin D Swanson US Navy son of Mr and Mrs Alvin G Swanson of Denver in Augustana Lutheran Church Denver on Sunday October 21 Rev A T Lorimer officiated The couple will reside in Albuquerque New Mexico after a Colorado Springs wedding trip The Swanson family recently moved west of Osceola and the groom is the grandson of Mrs August Swanson of Osceola.
Funeral services were held at the Polk Methodist Church for Harvey H Hahn 47 a well known farmer west of Polk who died at Lincoln Veterans Hospital Monday morning following a three week illness. Rev A C Bates officiated with interment in Arborville cemetery. Survived by wife seven sons two daughters four brothers five sisters and his parents Mr and Mrs E W Hahn Polk. Obituary to follow next week.
Mr and Mrs Forrest Anderson hosted a Sunday dinner with Mr and Mrs David Sundberg and guests including Mr and Mrs Glen Hill W A Stevens Harry Peterson and Mr and Mrs Irvin Anderson. Mr and Mrs Albert Sundberg entertained Mr and Mrs Merle Simpson of Omaha and Mrs Ella Shenk with Mervin Shenk at a 600 dinner Thursday. Everett Green and son of Hayes Center visit Walter Green while Everett, recently discharged from the Navy, stays there. Mr and Mrs Werbert Rehrs and family of Hampton visited with Mr and Mrs Les RehisThursday evening.
State Auditor Ray C Johnson visited Osceola to deliver the complete Polk County audit results. He praised county officers for a well kept county, noted a healthy treasury balance, and a high tax collection percentage relative to other counties.
Community chatter on fair pricing for corn husking and mechanical picker work. Report on corn show expectations, car entry contest, and cattle sales at Albert Swanson and Albertus Larson farms. Also notes on Fred Bond’s attendance at a three day artificial insemination clinic in Lincoln.
Lt and Mrs G Thoburn Ran dall travel through Osceola en route to the Great Lakes Naval Training Station with Rev and Mrs G A Randall. The group includes Randall's daughter Mrs Wm Dunham of Colusa California. Numerous local residents and visitors from Lincoln Fremont Denver and Omaha frequent Osceola hosting and visiting with friends and relatives through the period.
Mr and Mrs B B W A Hahn spent the weekend in Lincoln with their daughter Mrs Lloyd Nordstedt and family and visited with their son Harvey at the Veterans Hospital. Rev Paul Lemke of the First Baptist Church conducted evening services at the church at Clarks with Rena Mae Willits and Beverly Joyce Jones assisting. Accompanying him were those two. Mr and Mrs Lawrence Lind and family of Stromsburg spent Sunday in Polk as guests in the home of Mr and Mrs Marvin Fredrickson. Mr and Mrs Lyman Lampshire of near Hordville spent the weekend with relatives at Sutton and Que Nebraska.
A damage suit over an April auto collision near Shelby proceeded in district court with Judge Hastings presiding. Plaintiff James Fasbender of Shelby faced Milford Peterson who also filed a cross petition. About twenty witnesses testified before a four hour jury deliberation awarded Fasbender 1025 dollars for damages.
The Post War program gains a new sound projector and a ten foot screen in the Visual Education program. Bell and Howell sound film on order after a rented silent projector the past two years. A one hour Thursday film program planned with upcoming special evening viewings for the public. School dismissed Wednesday for State Teacher's Conventions across Nebraska cities.
Local families hosted birthday parties and weekend gatherings in Polk, York, Clarks, and surrounding towns. Dinners and visits featured Mr and Mrs Henry Johnson, Mrs Harold Green, Harold Cramer, Clarence Johnson, and others, with trips to Louisiana Missouri and East Moline for extended family stays.
