Income Tax Jitters Sweep Polk County

County deputies audit 1942 to 1944 returns as farmers and businesspeople must keep records and canceled checks for at least three years. Officials plan to audit everyone in the county, urging retention of documents despite it not being March 15.

Hospital Visitation Rules At Stromsburg Hospital

The Stromsburg Hospital announces new visiting restrictions to protect mothers and babies. Visiting hours are eliminated in fore noon with limited windows in the afternoon and evening. Only the mother’s family and the baby’s grandparents may visit during the first three days, and no child under sixteen may visit unless it is the mother’s own child.

Polk County Farm Bureau Holds First Annual Meeting

The Polk county Farm Bureau will host its first annual meeting at Odd Fellows Hall in Osceola on Tuesday October 23 at p.m. Families should bring sandwiches or cake while coffee is provided. Committee chairs include Mrs Dewey Lockard for Constitution and By laws C R Carlson for Resolutions and Mrs Petrus Nelson for Lunch. Howard Peterson State Farm Bureau Secretary will explain the hybrid corn production cooperative program and present colored moving pictures.

Shelby Young Men Narrow Escape After Blast at Abbott Hardware

Three Shelby youths escaped serious harm when blasting powder exploded behind Abbott Hardware. Bud Abbott owner and Allan Brown and Jack Smith were present. sparks from a grinder ignited a powder barrel, tearing out the storefront. Abbott suffered severe facial and leg burns and is treated at St Francis Hospital. Brown and Smith sustained lighter burns with minimal stock damage.

Ekdahl Lockwood Wedding in Lincoln and Cairo

Miss Lintea Ekdahl daughter of Mrs Lillie Johnson of Lincoln wed Calvin Lockwood son of Mr and Mrs MG Lockwood Cairo Michigan in Evangelical Free Church of Detroit. Rev Milford Olson officiated with Alice Bodine and Gilbert Glad as singers. Guests gathered for a two course lunch and wedding cake reception at the bride's mother home. The bride, a Polk High School graduate, and groom, a two year overseas veteran with purple heart and Presidential Citation, plan to live in Cairo where he will work for Ford Motors.

Maytag Adds Automatic Washer Dryer and Gas Range

Wurtz and Son Maytag dealers in Polk report from President Ford Maytag the company will add an automatic washer and dryer both gas and electric a gas range and an electric frozen food rocket phones to the Maytag line. No dates yet for public availability though the gas range and frozen locker are hoped for early next year. Postwar washer samples have been released to over 7,000 U S dealers. local display model arrival is anticipated soon.

Bernt's Cafe and Station Destroyed in Spectacular Fire

A collision near Shelby caused an oil transport to overturn into Bernt's Cafe and service station, igniting after 4000 gallons of gasoline flooded the building. Firefighters from Osenola and Gresham battled the blaze. the site was described as Shelby’s most spectacular fire. Driver of the transport escaped. Moulden sustained a head injury. Loss estimated up to 35000 dollars with insurance only partially covering. A stop sign violation led to a $10 fine and costs for Vieulden.

Polk School reports the new Standard SpiritDuplicator arrived after a year on order. The machine will improve production of bulletins tests and seat-work and is appreciated by teachers and pupils. Students will receive their report cards this week. Films were shown Thursday.
