Alton Werth was injured last week when a caterpillar tractor he drove overturned. He sustained a badly hurt leg an injured arm and possibly a broken nose and is in St Josephs hospital Omaha, with internal injuries not yet known.
Birthday observances and visits note H. G. Brauer’s 76th birthday with guests including Barthold Baack Sam Wall Anne of Hampton Leo Wurtz and Daniel. Numerous relatives from Portsmouth York Central City Stromsburg Schuyler and Osceola share meals and visits through the weekend and beyond.
A series of Sunday meals and visits characterize the Arborville area gatherings. Eldon and Eldon Anderson join Stromsburg relatives, while the Schrader and Bedient families host guests from nearby towns. Attendees include Purdy of Denver, Recknor and Otte families, and many others from Lincoln Benedict Clarks Bradshaw Freemont York and Nickerson. The Arborville Missionary Society heard Rev Richards of Fairmont speak on England relief efforts.
A large group gathered at Mr. and Mrs. Frank Scheapler’s home on Sunday afternoon October 10 to celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary. Relatives enjoyed a program with songs by Mrs. Raymond Stunkle and Mrs. Henry Blase, a verse reading, an address by Rev C W Long, and an original poem read by Mrs. Henry Blase. The couple received gifts and a three tier cake, then shared a lunch with guests departing grateful for the memory.
Polk used a strong first half to lead Osceola 13 0 before Osceola rallied. Long scored from the one, Flodman added a 15 yard pass, and Nelson to Brazee tied the game in a 58 yard march. Polk stalled Osceola near the goal line late in the game as Gleim and Long starred for Polk.
The Baptist Missionary meeting met in the church parlors on Thursday afternoon with hostesses Mesdames Martin Jones George Otte Orlie Miller and Clara Anderson. Elaine Nyberg was guest speaker on South America. Gifts were presented to Nyberg in appreciation of her ministry among Polk people during her furlough.
The WCTU met at Mrs. A E Swanson's home with Mrs. A Stevens leading the lesson and business. Specials were given by Mrs. Lemke and readings by Mrs. Glen Hill. A large attendance shared lunch and officials announced Mrs. John Falk as next president.
We are still reviewing reading subjects as a six week test concluded Friday. Observations in grade rooms have been positive and further rural school visits are planned for October 20 under Leland Anderson.
Pole County Extension notes 11 calves bought for 4-H Baby Beef work for 1949. Local families enroll in Top Notchers Livestock club, with plans to organize more clubs in fall and arrange calf purchases early. District meetings in Genoa and Columbus outline county-wide extension plans and a 1948 Saddle Club year wrap.
Social items detail visits and gatherings among local families including Carlson, La more, Myers, Graves, Hollister, Rystrom, Knerr, and Anderson households. Trips to Lincoln Omaha Houston and California are mentioned along with a hospital stay for Mrs. Myers and a vacation for Laverna Rystrom. The Baptist Church trustees shared a Monday evening gathering at the Glasser home.
Mr and Mrs Edwin Lewis visited Monday evening with Mr and Mrs Gordon Fredrickson and Stephen. Several families shared Sunday dinners and Friday gatherings at various homes including the Art Ekstrom and George B Anderson households. Additional visits included Delia Samuelson, Ada, Lena Johnson and families, and multipleJohnson households with extended kin.
Polk County farmers report yields higher than expected after a dry spell. Some plots show test results near the hundred bushel mark while most fields run forty to sixty bushels per acre. Market movement is slow with prices around 1.25 per bushel, down from last year. Doyle Munn and family visited Richard Sealey Jr. on Thursday evening.
