Attendance Overflows at Polk County Co-op Barbecue
An estimated crowd near 2500 attended the Farmerg Co-On Barbecue at the Polk County Fair Grounds on October 12. The ten cooperative groups spent about a thousand dollars to host for 1500 expected guests, and food ran low only briefly with five gallons of baked beans left. Local clubs and schools joined dignitaries and 100 visitors from outside the county, with remarks by Ames College economist Frank Robtka and a program chaired by Elton Berck and Edick Anderson.

The Polk alumnus Robert Stromberg, son of the late Josse and Oukcar Stromberg, rose from Polk High School at 15 to a high position in Washington D C. He attended night classes while working for the IRS, earned degrees from Franklin University, passed the D C bar, served as a Merchant Marine lieutenant in WWII, and joined the Federal Communications Commission with postings in San Francisco New York and Washington D C. He attended an International Conference in Paris in 1949 and writes of his travels. He is honored by Polk friends and family for perseverance, hard work, and intellect.
