Need For Blood Is Great In Korea

The Red Cross Bloodmobile will visit Shelby Parish Hall on November 1 from 11:00 to 5:00 to aid troops in Korea. Red Cross centers lack sufficient blood for Armed Forces amid high demand. Men who donated on August 21 in Stromsburg may donate again. Soldiers at Offutt Field in Omaha also gave blood last week. Prepare to give a pint when the Bloodmobile arrives.

The High School Senior Class plans a pheasant tail feather contest with prizes for the class and individual feathers. The Adult Fellowship of the Methodist Church met at C M Frederikson’s home for a recreation program and refreshments. hosts for the Central Adult Fellowship event on October 28 were announced.

Polk County Teachers Elect New Officers In Shelby Meeting

Polk County teachers gathered in Shelby for the year’s first meeting. New officers were elected with Clair Wilbur as president and H A Leamons as vice president. Polk rated 100 percent representation and membership in the county organization.

William P. Miller obituary highlights Nebraska farmer and public servant

William P. Miller born May 29 1880 on his father’s Polk Nebraska homestead grew to manhood there. He farmed on the same land before moving to Polk to run a business for eight years and served two terms on the Board of County Commissioners. He married Anna Louise Rudson February 11 1911 and fathered two sons Orlin William and Floyd Kenneth. He died October 15 1961 at age 71 years 4 months 20 days. He was member of AF and AM Wilanna Eastern Star Chapter Elks of York. Survived by wife Anna Louise two sons two daughters in law Garnet and Bernice three grandchildren two great grandchildren three sisters and one brother. Funeral services held October 16 1961 at the Miller home and Baptist Church with burial Arborville Cemetery. Pallbearers listed and many relatives attended from distant places.

Country Woman's Club Tours Hastings Day Trip

A 22 member Country Woman's Club group boarded a chartered bus to Hastings for a tour of the Naval Depot Made-Over Day Factory and the House of Yesterday. They enjoyed a noon meal and supper in Grand Island on the way home reporting a pleasant and profitable day.

Three Polk County youths inducted into armed forces

Three young men from Polk County were inducted into the Armed Forces at Omaha on October 9, 1951. The inductees were Marvin J. Mureek from Columbus, Burdette C. Williams from Stromsburg, and Willard D. Johnson from Stromsburg. None of the inductees resided in the Polk community.

Farm Scrap Drive In Progress In Polk County

A Farm Scrap Drive runs October 16 to November 15 in Polk County led by the Mobilization Committee. Farmers urged to deliver heavy scrap items and metal to local dealers to aid steel production for defense and to supply farm machinery with new equipment. Lee F. Residence Sold For Good Price At Public Auction

The late Mrs. Minnie Johnsons residence sold at public auction Tuesday afternoon. Enoch Peterson became owner for 34700. The sale was conducted by W. W. Norton as attorney for the estate and J. I. Stanton as referee. Perfect weather greeted attendees.

Arborville Town Hall Club Hosts Halloween Variety Program

On Wednesday evening October 17 the Arborville Town Hall Club held its regular meeting featuring a program from local schools Districts 44 66 48 81 and 61 with teachers listed. The Faithful Workers Club presented a comedy one act and a refreshment committee served pie and coffee to a large crowd.

Progress Now Printed In Polk Returns To Press

The Polk Progress resumes printing on the old press once used in Osceola. After years of neglect and rust the machine is revived with help from Norris Alfred who began in printing 17 years ago. The restored press rolls again, continuing the paper’s local production.

Polk Trounces Silver Creek in 47 to 12 rout

Polk High School Cubs overwhelmed Silver Creek as they rolled to a 47 to 12 victory. Freshmen Denny Cramer and Louis Light flashed potential while the reserves earned more playing time. Polk hosts Stromsburg next, with a large crowd expected.

Hunting Season In Full Swing In Rural Nebraska

The opening duck and geese season drew good bags and fair hunting on opening weekend in eastern Nebraska. Many pursued two geese, while birds headed south as farmers anticipated northward flights. Nielsen Hahn Rites Held at Fridhem Church

Irene Nielsen daughter of Mr and Mrs Paul Nielsen and Dwayne Hahn son of Mrs Hannah Hahn wed October 14 at Fridhem Lutheran Church Hordville. 3 pm ceremony featured lavender gowns yellow bouquets devout music and a reception for 140 at the church parlor.
