Co op Barbecue Event at Polk County Fairgrounds

Polk County cooperative units plan a Friday barbecue at the Fair Grounds October 12 with Dick Laski of KRVN, the Stromsburg band, and Ames College’s Frank Robota. The noon meal of beef and fish will be served by ten co op directors. a rain plan moves attendees to Osceola High School.

September Meeting of Polk Woman's Club

Polk Woman's Club met at Mrs. P. W. Aker’s home for a regular session. Jocelyn Stromberg was nominated for county Vice President and named as District Convention delegate in Wahoo. Chapters reported, planning a December Christmas party. Donations of one dollar to Children’s Memorial Hospital were to be collected by October 24 through Marie Lyle. Birthday Dinner Honors Mrs Dahlin in Lincoln

Mrs Rolland Dahlin was the guest of honor at a Sunday dinner hosted by Mr and Mrs Robert Stevens in Lincoln. The guest list included the Dahlin family and Delores who spent the weekend with Marilyn and Marion Dahlin.

Stroups and Relatives Take Kansas Missouri Trip

Mr and Mrs James Stroup of Lingle Wyoming with her parents Mr and Mrs C H Smith toured Kansas and Missouri leaving Polk Monday returning Saturday to visit John Norton in Butler Mo and an aunt in Rich Hill also visiting Mrs Stroups mother in Erie Kan and a sister in Baxter Springs Hastings guests Mr and Mrs W BE James and son Bill dined with Mrs Merle Stromberg and Mr Stromberg on Sunday.

Carl Waak Public Sale Set for October 18

Carl Waak to hold a full farm sale at 12 noon on Thursday October 18. Sale site is 3 miles west and 314 miles south of Polk. Items include machinery cattle hogs baled hay and more. Auction of Minnie Johnson Home in Polk County

The residence of the late Minnie Johnson will be sold at public auction in Polk County on Tuesday October 23 at 2 pm. The property includes two 80 foot lots and a two story six room modern house currently occupied by the Johnson family. Full information is in another page’s ad.

Odd Fellows Hold District Meeting With Local Representives

One of the biannual Odd Fellows district meetings was held Thursday evening at their hall. Towns represented included Schuyler Bellwood Osceola Shelby Columbus Central City Aurora York Dorchester Clarks and Bassett. Seventy four members were served lunch by the Rebekah Lodge ladies.

Bridal Shower Held for Irene Nielsen

Miss Irene Nielsen of Central City was honored at a mixed shower in the Methodist Church parlors hosted by Mrs. Hannah Hahn Mrs. Lloyd Hahn and Mrs. Harold Hanquist. Attendees enjoyed music poems and a mock wedding before a buffet lunch for about 60 guests. The bride to be will wed Dwayne Hahn October 14 at the Lutheran Church in Hordville.

Driver's Licenses On Sale Here Saturday

Polk County Treasurer Carleton Anderson will set up at Sundberg's Hardware Store in Polk this Saturday from 1 to 5 PM to issue driver’s licenses for residents who have not yet purchased theirs. Through October 6 the county office had sold 38,275 licenses this year, with 4,492 sold in the prior two years. 18 days remain to renew or obtain a license before the 60 day grace period ends at month’s end.

Wheat Growth Shows Improvement After Rain

Wheat seedings are improving in growth and appearance with a heavy green mat forming on fields. A recent break in the weather and rains support a hoped for good growth this fall for a solid crop next summer. Corn damage from the recent freeze is estimated at about 25 percent, but overall outlook remains cautiously hopeful around early July.

October Meeting of Legion Auxiliary Held at Legion Hall

The American Legion Auxiliary met at the Legion Hall with Lauretta Neuhaue presiding. A blood donor drive was urged for Shelby on November 1. The group decided to send 5 to Gene McGlaason fund and discussed school bond sales. Next meeting set for November 12 at 8 pm. Anita Eisler and Doris Ostberg attended the Columbus District Convention. A purse scavenger hunt and Halloween-themed lunch followed.

Chuck's Cafe Changes Ownership

Paul Holmes will take charge of Chuck's Cafe around early December after harvesting corn and selling farm equipment. The Holmes family bought the J. L. Stouffer home they will occupy, while former operator Charles Peterson remains uncertain about his plans.

Memorial Presented to Methodist Church

During the morning worship at the Methodist Church a memorial in memory of Arnold Isaac son Gilbert Benson and a son Ronnie was presented by Mrs. C. J. McCoy with Albert Sundberg accepting for the church. The oak communion table flower vases candelabras and baptismal font were donated by Mrs. Benson. Mrs. James Lindburg sang a solo Communion followed by a Service of Holy Communion.

Cramer Family Celebrates September Birthdays at Harold Cramer Home

Members of the Cramer family gathered at Harold Cramer’s home on Sunday September 30 to celebrate Henry Cramer’s birthday and the birthdays of several others. Discovery table in kindergarten class and student move

Our room displays a Discovery table with leaves pine cones nuts and seeds. The class notes a snake frog grasshopper caterpillar several butterflies and a bugs. One first grader Kenneth Whis enhunt had to leave to move to another town.

Primitive Man study ends with tools and crafts

Fifth and sixth graders complete the Primitive Man unit detailing how early people developed tools language customs art and religion. Boys made crude toma hawks from available tools while girls painted and dressed clothes pin dolls without needles thread or scissors.

Seventh and eighth graders note science and home making progress

Seventh graders started a science table and compared seeds while eighth grade mourned Beverly Bradstreet moving to Lincoln. The groups photographed, reviewed six weeks tests, enjoy new spelling books, and report success in home making with canning jelly and planned conserves. The Shop class reports benches, a grinder, a sander, an old jig saw, and awaiting lumber for projects. The Junior Class chose a comedy play to be performed December 7, 1951 with more details to come.

Mrs Ernest Lott traveled to Omaha Tuesday to see her husband Mr Lott who had been discharged from the Methodist hospital. He is now convalescing at his daughter’s home in Shelby.

Polk and Clarks Battle Ends In 6-6 Tie

Polk and Clarks battled to a 6 to 6 stalemate on Clarks field Friday night in a muddy contest. Polk scored first on a 30 yard march capped by Bob Peterson’s touchdown. Clarks tied in the second quarter after a blocked punt return of 67 yards by Ken Werner. Both teams mustered 7 first downs. Clarks edged Polk in rushing yardage 132 to 114. Polk faces Osceola next Friday in a county seat showdown.
