E E Pengelly, minister of Bwede Plains M E Church, invites worship at 10 am and Sunday School at 11 am. The pastor recalls a recent homecoming, urges a large congregation, and notes an upcoming Board of Stewards meeting.
Regular services will be held next Sunday at 10 30 am. The Call of the Cross will be shown at the Viking Theatre Polk next Sunday evening at 8 00 o'clock. No admission but a free will offering will be received. Everyone is invited. Visitors are always welcome.
The Methodist church outlines Sunday School at 10, Morning Worship at 11, and Evening Services at 7 30. A Tuesday evening gathering for all young people and a Monday October 17 District Retreat in Aurora are announced. Choir practice is Thursday, and thanks are given to Mrs Hill and the Polk Progress editor for church notices.
W H Lee pastor announces fall revival starting this Sunday October 16 at 7 30 pm with daily services at 7 30 pm through further notice Sunday school at 10 am preaching at 11 am and 7 30 pm YPMS at 5 45 pm prayer meeting Thursday at 7 30 pm all are invited to hear the gospel messages and do good.
Pastor Paul E. Carlson invites all Christians to attend Sunday School at 10:00 and Morning Worship at 11:00 with Evening Service at 8:00. A Thursday prayer service and junior endeavor at 7:30 precedes next Sunday’s Lord's Supper after morning worship. Everyone urged to partake.
Rev. R. M. Bailey asks for stronger church attendance as Jr and Sr BYPU gather at 7 15 prayer meeting Tuesday and a party for youths Friday October 14. Board of Trustees meets October 17 at Lloyd Lind home. Revival with Rev. Ralph Nelson October 25 to November 6 at First Baptist Nebraska City with special prayer groups planned at Ames Lind and Frank Fossberg homes.
A swift Monday morning blaze completely consumed Maurice Lindburg’s vacant farm home one mile south of Polk. A south wind fed the flames as Mrs. Lindburg, who had started a laundry fire, learned the house was on fire after the siren sounded. The family lost all clothing and possessions, with only partial insurance to ease the hardship.
Polk county 4 H forestry clubs showcase successful windbreak planting with an average 80 percent survival. Johnny Zohner of Shelby planted 26 broadleaf and 7 evergreen trees, ending with 33 alive. Frank Bard near Osceola reports 190 broadleaf and 83 evergreens surviving from 300 planted. Emphasis on ground prep and cultivation to ensure tree growth, with advice to plow and place a snow fence on the north side of prepared ground.
A Bloomfield minister tested a slot machine to gauge winning odds. He found the machine pays out about 56 cents per dollar spent. Estimates show six machines could yield 4 000 to 5 000 dollars yearly to the syndicate, with Knox county residents receiving a small annual sum.

The mid week BYPU gathering will be hosted by Mr and Mrs Roland Swanson in Stromsburg on Wednesday evening October 19. Attendees should meet at the church at 7 00 and transport will be provided for all.
Shelby and Clarks battled to a 0 0 tie on October 7, dropping Shelby to third place. Osceola beat Polk 21 to 0, putting them closer to the championship, while Silver Creek beat Ulysses outside the conference. Current standings show Osceola 2 0 6 1000, Silver Creek 1 0 1 000, Shelby 1 0 1 750, Clarks 12 1 375, Stromeburg 0 1 0 000, Polk 0 2 0 000.
Polk battled Osceola on Friday in a hard fought football contest. A key Osceola fumble recovery near the Polk nine yard line stalled Polk's best threat. Osceola erupted for 21 points in the third quarter, sealing a 21 to 0 win as Polk showed grit despite unfavorable breaks.
Local hunters are urged to polish firearms and prepare for the pheasant season opening next Sunday and running until November 1. Observers report pheasants are more plentiful this year, with warnings to respect private property and seek permission before entering land marked No Trespassing.

A Stromsburg family reunion at Mr. and Mrs. A. F. Nordberg home honored Mrs. V. J. Wallin of Bolivia Bolivia South America. Attendees included Dr Charles Rydberg Litchfield and multiple Nordberg and Rystrom family members.
At a Tuesday meeting the Polk Fire Department decided to purchase a fire truck and equipment. A committee including Donald Johnson Lloyd Kroger Leo Wurtz and Bill Wright will inspect trucks. Other members will meet the Village Board to select a building, with the old Progress building as a possible site.

R C Riley recalls early Polk County life from the 1870s to 1890s as he discusses the first Polk County fair in 1879, horse racing, weight pulling, drought, rainmaking, and village life. He notes changing prices, wealth, and attitudes toward politics and money.

Precinct meetings elected chairmen and members to the county and community committees. At the Friday October 7 county convention the county committee was chosen: Chairman Robert C. Taddiken, Vice-chairman Herman A. Jones, Third Member John M. Staroscik. Jennivee Cook named secretary. Howard L. Peterson becomes co officer and educational director. Wilbert H. Smith remains treasurer.
Polk county will host an official corn picking contest sponsored by the Stromsburg Community Club at the Arthur Morrill farm near Stromsburg on Friday October 21 beginning 10 a.m. Iowa 939 Hybrid corn is expected to yield 35 to 40 bushels per acre. Field access restrictions apply to protect standing corn. A program includes a master of ceremonies Howard Peterson agricultural agent, Stromsburg band, a turkey shoot during weighing, and a Genoa versus Stromsburg high school football game at 2 p.m. Three cash prizes total 35, with local merchants adding awards so all entrants receive something. First twelve entries are to be coordinated by Jim Branting. other entrants may join if space remains. Participants named include Lawrence Larson Curtis Flodmann Alfred Teegerstrom Russel Anderson Paul Jones Elmer Berger Marvin Mace.

Taxpayers in Polk village near completion of a long installment plan for paving and bonds. After October 15, only one more payment remains for the paying tax assessment. The village owes 270000 in intersection paving bonds and 750000 in district paving bonds, with district bonds due 2500 yearly and funded for December. The village also holds 11200 in water bonds, of which 5000 were purchased from light and water funds. Older residents who opposed paving now boast of Polk’s two miles of paved streets as evidence of progress.
William Deuker longtime resident of this community died at his Aurora home Friday October 7 following a lingering illness at age 71. He is survived by his wife daughter Mrs. Chris Regier of this vicinity a son Herman of San Anselmo California one brother Adam Deuker and one sister Mrs. Caroline Beinz of Sterling Colorado. Funeral services were held at the Lutheran Church in Hampton Tuesday October 11 with interment in Hampton Cemetery.
Mrs Rollie Williams who has been under medical care in York for six weeks returned to her home here on Sunday. Floyd Larson and his son from Stromsburg visited that day with his parents Mr and Mrs Frank Larson.
