Carl Steelquist announces WPA approval of refinishing contracts for Polk’s local school building with work to start by Saturday November 27. He says no ceremony will mark the kickoff, but a big celebration is planned next spring upon completion. The school board is praised for its farsightedness.
Light dialogue jokes mix with brief local notices about Woodrow Wilson at Fremont and visits by Lindquist and Lindburg families. Football squad traveled to Shelby, lost 21 to 0, with Thanksgiving Day game vs Stromsburg expected crowd.

Neighbors and friends gathered Tuesday evening at Mrs. Keuper’s home to celebrate her birthday anniversary. A luncheon followed the social time, and guests departed after wishing her many more happy birthdays. The honoree received many nice gifts.
Mrs Charles Peterson hosted the Faithful Workers Club on Thursday November 18 with 18 members and 6 visitors. A one o clock luncheon followed, each member bringing a covered dish. After the business meeting members drew names for Christmas exchanges and talks by Mrs Frank Nordberg and Mrs Forrest Berggren recalled the State Convention in Omaha. Handwork pieces were shown. The club adjourned to meet with Mrs Fred Williams on December 22.
Mrs J McCoy was pleasantly surprised Friday afternoon when a group of ladies gathered to celebrate her birthday anniversary. A pot luck luncheon followed and the honoree received many gifts and greetings. guests departed wishing her many more happy returns.
Mrs Hanna M Larson 45 former Stromsburg resident died after several months illness in Lincoln hospital. Services were held at Victor Anderson and Co Chapel and Free Mission Church with Rev S C Theo Ramsey officiating. Survived by husband Henry, daughter Marian of Fremont, two sisters and five brothers. Interment in Stromsburg Cemetery.
The Masonic Lodge No. 126 hosted a Central School of Instruction in the Masonic Hall on Tuesday and Wednesday with attendees from Aurora Hampton Polk Osceola Shelby and Gresham. Grand Custodian Later Savage of Omaha directed events assisted by I D Huston of Osceola. A banquet for 60 capped the session and honored Alex Scott with the Fifty Year Button. Willard Wickham was also honored as he moves to Omaha.
The Polk Juniors won two fast games from Benedict on the local floor Tuesday night. The first team won 16 to 8 and the reserves 8 to 0. Sundberg led the first team with 12 points. Davis added 4. Players sighted included Alfred, Cohagen, Willits, Stevens, Pengelly and Jones. Newton scored six in the second game. Rodine, Don Ostberg, Dean Ostberg, Miller, Montzingo, Gustafson, M. Branting, Smitht and Lindburg also appeared. Referees were Don and Max Peterson. The Polk team travels to Hordville next week.

Mrs Axel Fredrickson and Mrs Hattie Anderson visit Osceola with Mrs Charles Kelander. Junior Mission Band Dorcas Society and Women's Missionary Society plan a 3 45 program and prayer service. Many residents host dinners visits and weekend trips to Hellyk Colorado Grand Island Lincoln Central City and Osceola. Dana Shostrom celebrated 50th birthday with family and friends.

ARBORVILLE Mr and Mrs Leand Bowers and son and R Fisher of Blair were Sunday dinner guests in the Johnson home. Sybil and Ted Otte of California visited the Reckner home Tuesday afternoon. Schrader family dined with Irvin Hilligas near Hardville. Schrader relatives visited Eddie Larson at York hospital Sunday afternoon. Mrs Von Hausen and Mrs Margaret Anderson returned from western Nebraska. Hazel Youngland arrived from Chicago for an extended visit with G B Youngland. Sparling and Mrs Free man Fusby of Benedict visited A O Whittemore. H J Bedient family dined with Herbert Bedient. Harold Bedient visited W Green at Polk. Fred Bedient spent Saturday with W E Bedient at Waco. Charles Smith and son Freddie of Polk called on Charles Bowers. Maurice Flick visited John Weber and Viola. Gertrude Flick and family visited relatives at Aurora Sunday.
The community hears a call to attend revival services starting December 1 in Polk Auditorium. Brother C. B. Hedstrom from Chicago leads a union program with a large choir and involvement from all church workers. The message emphasizes salvation and Christmas season blessings.
The Y.P.M.S. Conference Convention will convene at Polk Free Methodist Church from Thursday evening through Sunday. Evangelist Rev. B. N. Wire will lead with inspiration encouragement and blessing. Public is welcome to attend these services.
The Country Women's Club gathered Monday afternoon November 22 at Mrs Ollie Johnson's home with fifteen members and five visitors. A luncheon was served and a program provided by Mrs Herman Fredrickson. The group adjourned to meet December 16 with Mrs Ilos Ostberg. Numerous local residents visited or hosted gatherings around town during the week.
A six thousand dollar irrigation system on the Gilbert Benson farm southwest of Polk was finished and started Monday. A 2600 dollar diesel motor powers the setup burning four gallons of low-cost oil per hour. From a 160 foot well the system delivers 1800 gallons per minute to corn rows with six rows watered at a time. The project aims to offset drought and utilize modern farming methods including two tractors. Men say Polk County shows faith by this investment and similar wells are being dug nearby.
At the Rotary Club gathering in Osceola, Dr. R L Schroeder received a past president pin before departing for Alhambra California to start a medical practice. Local residents and visitors enjoyed social events and bridge club gatherings while a fire crew handled two roof fires without major damage.
A Friday gathering at Dana Shostroms home celebrated his fiftieth birthday with relatives and friends. Attendees included Mr. and Mrs. P. Shostrom and family, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Shostrom and family, and others from York and Arborville areas. A luncheon followed and gifts for the honoree were plentiful. Mrs. Ed Stewart and family from near Arborville visited Cliff Brauer’s home Sunday.
