Christmas Lights to be Turned On in Polk

Polk hosts Christmas lights event on December 1 as the commercial club organizes decorations for business and homes. The lights will be turned on at 7 30 PM by Arnold Neuhaus with a Polk High School chorus performance. Santa Claus visits December 15 and a merchants sponsored guessing contest occurs December 22.

Long Time Osceola Resident Godfrey Lindahl Dies

Word was received Monday forenoon of the death of Godfrey Lindahl at the home of Mrs. Martha Walgreen at Osceola. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon from the Brauer Funeral Home.

Mrs Donald Ostberg entertained the Country Women's Club Thursday afternoon assisted by Mrs Helen Samuels and Mrs Agnes Sealey. The group worked on a quilt for Kansas flood sufferers and will tie it at Mrs Richard Widga's home on Thursday November 29. Refreshments were served and the next meeting will be with Mrs Dean Ostberg.

Lutheran Smorgasbord Draws Immense Attendance

The Smorgasbord at Fridhem Lutheran Church in MHordville on Thursday evening November 15 sold 412 tickets in advance and ran from five to nine PM. Polk County Women’s Extension Club Training Sessions Held

Training meetings for the Polk County Women’s Extension Clubs were led by the Home Agent in Stromsburg on November 12 and Shelby on November 13. Discussions covered economical dried fruits, their dietary value and preparation ideas, plus new cookie recipes. An officers training session for 1952 was held November 5 in the District Court Room, with Mrs. George Tiaden and Miss Crosby coordinating. The Home Agent will attend project trainer meetings in Lincoln November 26–28.

Sheralee Hill Wins State 4-H Citizenship Honor

Sheralee Hill, daughter of Mr and Mrs Glenn Hill and a Pol Hich School senior, earns top state 4-H Citizenship honors after seven years in 4-H club work. She is now eligible to compete against state winners for a $300 scholarship.

About 400 patrons of Polk school district No 72 attended a special open visit to observe class work in high school and grades. The gathering ended with motion pictures and the high school band under Mr Don Staples, followed by an explanation of National Education by Supt Harvey Leamons and a note on the Home Making Department led by Miss Mabel Lucado.

Perfect Attendance and Class Activities At Night School

Pupils across seventh and eighth grades participated in review and Q&A sessions. The seventh grade studied science and both grades answered social studies questions. After classes a program was enjoyed by all, and the boys began basketball practice last Wednesday.

The Baptist Church hosted a Friday evening reception for Polk Schools teachers. Rev. Anderson introduced each guest, Mrs. Ted Otte led entertainment with group singing and a French horn solo by Allen Siegelbein, and Mrs. Martin Jones dressed as an early schoolteacher read a fitting passage. Fall decor contributed festive air as refreshments reached about ninety guests.

Nebraska hog crop to top five million this year

U S Department of Agriculture projects Nebraska will produce over five million hogs and pigs in the current year, yielding about 130 million dollars and accounting for roughly 4.6 percent of the nation’s total swine. The 1940 crop contributed 16 percent of state farm income, with cattle highest among crops.
