Bank setbacks spark Polk county booster meeting drive

The Town of Fre mont reports two Polk bank failures prompting calls for a mass depository meeting. Organizers want to appoint a committee to consult the State Banking Department on forming a new bank or other steps to aid the community and restore business confidence. Citizens urged to boost local trade and form a transparent protective league to support Polk.

Auto Crash Endangers Dr Westfall Near Polk Hill

Last Saturday evening Dr Westfall returning from a call west of Polk collided with a road maintainer operated by Carl Lind at the crest of Anton Peter gon hill. The dark rear without warning lights caused the head-on wreck and about 200 dollars damage to the doctor’s car. Westfall and Arvilla Reed escaped serious injury. both carried liability insurance.

Mr and Mrs R H Barnard from Grand Island were guests of Mrs Jane Rumbarger at hotel Sunday. F O Johnson returned from Omaha after his wife’s operation. Mrs Johnson is reported dying ordinarily well. American Legion Auxiliary met at Mrs Nellie Nelson’s home November 19. After business, scrapbooks were made for disabled veterans’ children. lunch featured creamed chicken and pumpkin pie. See Christmas cards at Progress office. Dan Carter and family were Folk visitors from Sutton Sunday. R E Nelson visited Glenn Lindberg and wife at Nelson’s store. Mrs C B Brassard and Miss Edna Ashelford and Letha King of Central City were Sunday guests of Miss Dorothy Green. Dimes Sealey was stricken with paralysis last Saturday and is improving. Mrs Alex Scott, Mrs Wallace Scott, and Mrs Hugh McGuffin visited Sutton Monday to help Mrs Dan Carter celebrate her birthday. Congressman Chas E Sloan expects to return from Geneva to Washington soon to resume duties. Progress subscriptions require less than three bushels of corn or two of wheat. Mrs C Q Eckles hosted the Literature Department of the Women’s Club. study on Nebraska led by the leader, refreshments served. Viking Hall dance noted. Neighbors serenaded Wesley Lindahl and bride at the Chae Johnson home. newlyweds received $10.00.

Bank of Polk Closes With 140000 In Deposits

Bank of Polk directors informed State Bank Commissioner Woods of the closure. Fred W. Babka arrived to take charge for the state banking bureau. Deposits stood about 140000, down from 196942.70 on June 29 1929 and 182719.54 on Sept 24 1929. Receivership to be pursued. no reorganization planned. Joshua Cox was president and M G Cox vice president. Paul Keller had moved to Omaha.

Johnson Sedlan Married at Swede Plain Parsonage by Rev Exwall

Forrest A. Sedan and Miss Niva Johnson were married November 12 at the Swede Plain parsonage by Rev J. W. Exwall. Both residents of Polk most of their lives with many friends sending congratulations. The bride is daughter of C. O. Johnson, groom son of J. A. Sedan of Benedict. They visited relatives at York and Hastings before returning to Polk.
