The fall rush at the Soil Testing Laboratory is nearly over, so farmers should collect soil samples now while the ground is unfrozen. Results normally arrive in about three weeks, but during February to May delays up to 6 to 8 weeks may occur. Information sheets and mailing boxes are in the extension office.
The Legion Hall hosted a large Auxiliary meeting with many members and guests. Mr. Wilfred Stephens reviewed the book Communist Trail in America by Jacob Spolansky, the Auxiliary’s chosen work. Volunteers prepared holiday gift boxes for service members, sending forty boxes, and a total of five dollars was donated to both the Boy Scouts and Halloween party sponsors.
John Esakson 90 of Marquette died Monday evening at his daughter's home, Mrs. K L Stewart. He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Stewart of Polk and Mrs. Harold Rhodes of Utica. his wife died in April 1952. Funeral services were set for 2 p.m. at the Marquette home and 2:30 p.m. at Kronberg Church, with burial at Kronberg.
Mr and Mrs Clyde Cox of Washington Kansas visited Tuesday to Friday at the home of her brother W C Steele Lennis Lind entertained them at supper Thursday. Delegates Wallace Sandell Elmer Hanquist and Rev Elwood Sandell attended the ordination service for Rev Harry Ratzraft at Hordville Monday. The Home Society met at Arthur Dittmer's Tuesday with business and social time. Christmas Club donations and items for the Omaha Children's Home were collected. Refreshments and coffee were served.
The Agriculture Outlook Conference in Washington suggests 1954 will be less prosperous for farming and industry. Net farm income is expected to fall again, with price declines likely in surplus commodities. Acreage controls on wheat and possible allotments on corn and cotton will curb total production and farm income, forcing adjustments for many farm families.
Mr and Mrs Robe Gustafson of Lincoln announce the birth of their daughter Camilla Sue on November 12 at Lincoln General Hospital.
Lutheran Ladies Aid Society gathered November 12 at Mrs Ray Stunkel home with Mrs Frank Scheapler assisting. Thirty three members answered roll call and plans were made for a spring mother daughter banquet bake sale before Thanksgiving and Christmas activities including stockings for a Fremont Children’s Home and a December 11 party.
Arbarville News reports the church service schedule with Pastor Paul W. Nelson leading at 11 A. M. after 10 A. M. Sunday School under Floyd Merchant as superintendent. The item reflects a local church information brief.
The Missionary group hosted a public showing of The Hidden Heart on Wednesday evening November 11 replacing the usual afternoon lesson. Harvey Wochner led the projector with Mrs. Burgess conducting a brief meeting and social hour refreshments served by Mrs. Harvey Wochner and Mrs. Leand Bower.
The Stromberg's Grocery and Locker slaughter house opens this week with Glen Green as the butcher. The first beef, owned by Lowell Bills, arrived early Monday and will be processed from kill to packaging for locker storage. Lloyd Stromberg notes customers can now have animals killed and meat packaged in one place.
The PMA committee is surveying every farm in the county to record corn acres for 1951 1952 and 1953 as preparation for 1954 allotments. Secretary Benson says allotments will be in force for next year and data from the survey will prepare the local office. Cooperation is requested to complete the survey and file the information promptly.
The First Baptist church announced Christmas programs last week. On December 20 the choir will present its cantata and on December 22 the Sunday School program will be held.
In observance of Thanksgiving Day Thursday November 26 Polk business houses that usually observe closed days will close all day. With Thanksgiving Day the issue date of the Progress delivery will be one day later next week.
The Fridhem Lutheran church in Hordville hosted its annual Smorgasbord drawing steady crowds Thursday evening from 5 to 8 p.m. About 600 attendees enjoyed Swedish dishes prepared by the church ladies. Swedish emblems decorated the tables, and waitresses wore Swedish costumes enhancing the festive atmosphere.
