Six inches of wet snow fell Friday into Saturday, with blizzard like accumulation and poor visibility. The storm brought moisture and drift potential was limited by light winds. Warm temperatures followed, thawing most snow by week’s start.
The Polk Women’s Club held its November meeting in Community Hall with 23 members and three guests. New members Mrs. Lloyd Hahn and Mrs. Will Lochéer attended. gifts were sent to shut-ins Marie Lyle and Alvena Stahl. next shut-in is Mrs. Will Wurtz. The club donated $5 to the Halloween party expenses and will send Christmas greetings to servicemen and gifts to Osceola Old People’s Home. A plea to write Dr. Smith of the State Board of Health for a local doctor was made. Program on Art led by Mrs. Art Phillips, Mrs. Leslie Adelton, and Mrs. Arnold Neuhaus featured glo-candles demonstrated by Grace Traden of Columbus. lunch was served by Werbena Wurtz, va Cramer, and Sylvia Sandell.
Mr and Mrs Van Bush and Mr and Mrs Milton Anderson were York visitors Monday. Lincoln hosts included Mr and Mrs Carl Steelquist and guests Jiof Ostberg Polk, Mr and Mrs Robert Lindahl Clarks, Mr and Mrs Ivan Bengston Aurora, Miss Mabel Samuelson Hardville, and Mr and Mrs Emil Person Lincoln.
J O Swanson obituary notes birth near Swede Home December 11 1812 and death October 31 1953 at Doctors Hospital Lincoln. She married Alfred J Quinn then Joseph O Swanson and left four children four grandchildren two great grandchildren a host of relatives. Funeral services held November 3 1953 at Kepner Funeral Home and Swede Home Lutheran Church conducted by Rev Bernt Johnson and Rev R E Hammer.
Elmer Johnson uses crutches after knee fracture. Lincoln visits include Mr and Mrs Robert Gustafson and Mr and Mrs Chauncey Gustafson in the Gustafson homes. Harold Kuck and Stevie of St Libory and Mrs Reuben Ehn visit Harold Carlgon family Friday.
Mr and Mrs Loyal Necker of Hordville announce a son born November 5 at St Francis Hospital Grand Island. Mrs Necker is Ro Jean Nelson. Mr and Mrs Donald Bankson of Hordville welcomed a son born October 23 at Stromsburg Hospital. Mr and Mrs Beryl Willits near Clarks are parents of twin boys born Saturday November 7 at Stromsburg Hospital weighing 5 10 and 5 12 pounds.
Eight Polk seniors wore Polk blue and white for the last time as Polk Cubs beat St Paul 6 0 in a snow soaked finale. Verland Widga blocked a punt and returned it for Polk's only score. Myron Norquest Carroll Shenk and Widga stood out on defense amid a rough, muddy field.
Jeanelle Kroger daughter of Mr and Mrs Lloyd Kroger is among about 580 new and transfer students at the University of Omaha this fall She is a Polk High School graduate of 1952 and studied at Luther College for one year now enrolled in the nursing program She will cheer for the nurses basketball team at Immanuel Lutheran Hospital this coming season.
Kenneth Schoen of Wahoo spoke at a sub district Methodist rally with a pot luck supper. Mrs Virginia Marsh Arch er and Mrs Lloyd Hahn led devotions and the business meeting. Presidents from several churches reported and Miss Blaine Nyberg spoke on missionary work in Caracas Venezuela.
Mr and Mrs Leland Harless and their two sons visited Sunday in the Gall Shay home in York. Oscar Fredrickson went to the home of his son Ansel in Stromsburg where he is currently making his home.
The Boxer Baby Beef Club met at Jerold Ruzicka’s home at 8:30 with roll call by president Gene Heiden and minutes read by secretary Gwen Johnson. Members approved a roller skating party in November, drew names for a Christmas gift exchange, and a demonstration was given by Harold Anderson and Jerome Ruzicka. One new member, Ronnie Johnson, was welcomed. After adjournment, Mrs. Jerold Ruzicka served lunch.
Mrs. Gilbert Lampshire departed Monday for Rochester Minnesota to join her husband Mr. Lampshire who is receiving medical treatment there. Mrs Clair Willits traveled to Priest City Idaho on Thursday to attend funeral services for her step mother Mrs Rose Shank.
The Middle West Soil Improvement Committee advocates fall liming for alfalfa, soybeans, corn, and pastures. Benefits include easier spreading, time savings, and better lime dissolution before planting legumes. Testing is advised to avoid over liming and to combine lime with nitrogen, phosphate, and potash fertilizers and soil amendments.
Polk County Farm Bureau held a Monday evening meeting at High Prairie with officers elected. Parker Aker named director from Pleasant Home precinct, Walter Berck chosen to represent Platte precinct. Edwin Hedlund showed Florida slides. Arthur Ekstrom presided as president. Mrs. Wallace Fredrickson performed a piano solo. Mrs. Fredrickson, Mrs. Lloyd Hahn and Mrs. Donald Hanquist joined the program committee, Ansel Fredrickson named membership chairman. Lunch followed.
Cpl. George A. Gordan son of Mr and Mrs Ted R Gordan took part in Exercise Mudlark the U S Forces annual fall training maneuver in Austria. He serves as a survey instrument operator with the 510th Field Artillery Battalion after entering the Army in January 1952 and arriving in Austria in September from Camp Chaffee Arkansas.
