Mrs. Frank Davis and Mrs. C. J. McCoy hosted a November birthday party for Polk community ladies. Twenty one guests attended despite weather and illness, with ages ranging from 17 to 78 and prizes won by several hosts.
The Lutheran Choral Union will present a sacred concert at the Polk high school auditorium this Friday night November 27 at 8 p.m. Several Immanuel Lutheran church youths from Polk sing in the chorus. Admission is free and the public is invited to attend.
The sale for Mrs Frank Bolton is set for Tuesday December 18 at 1 00 p m on the Polk area farm six miles north and two east. Machinery hay and misc items will be offered with Merrick and Ingalls as auctioneers and Citizens State Bank of Polk as clerk. Lunch will be provided by Swede Home Ladies Aid. James Lindburg and Leo Wurtz remain patients at St Francis Hospital in Grand Island after Monday surgery.
John Hall of York sustained chest and back injuries while operating a bulldozer on a farm near Hardville on Monday. A toppled tree pinned him against the seat as he piled uprooted trees. He was transported to York General Hospital in favorable condition the next day.
A Swede Plain church Layman's Rally Sunday evening featured talks by Richie Ashburn Phillies star Niles Barnard Conference Lay Leader R D Harrison Nebraska congressman and Homer Dickerson District Superintendent. Group singing and a fine dinner followed, with 137 laymen served by church ladies.
Osceola resident Alex Wobig died after a two car crash at a Polk County intersection nine miles east and four north of Polk. Reuben Anderson and his son Dennis were injured, with Reuben suffering a broken pelvis and Dennis treated for cuts and bruises. Both cars were extensively damaged and the Anderson vehicle was nearly demolished. Reuben rested comfortably by Wednesday after a Tuesday break.
Edick A. Anderson Jr. and his wife and daughter depart New York for Addis Ababa to assume his role heading the American Embassy Communications Department. The journey includes layovers in Gander Paris Rome Beirut Cairo and ends in Rome before progressing to Ethiopia. Heather Linn born during their time in Germany accompanies them on this move.
R C Kindwall elevator operator at Bradshaw died Sunday eleven miles south of Polk when a 12 gauge Remington discharged as he slipped on a snow embankment. Found around 1 30 pm by Boyd Hecht and Eugene Parks after leaving home at 8 30 am. Survived by wife two children mother and two sisters.
In attendance Thursday for the funeral services of Mr. John Esakson, father of Mrs. ZK. L. Stewart, held at Kronberg were Mesars and Mmes Marvin Fredrickson, N. EB. McNaught, W. J. Kroger and Mrs. Viola Benson, Rev. and Mrs. Harry Ratzlaff and family. Sunday evening guests in the Mrs. Ed and Theo Larson home included Mr. and Mrs. Leroy Nelson.
The Department of Agriculture reorganizes and designates the Production and Marketing Administration as the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Committee. All PMA Office functions move to ASC Office while community county and state PMA committees keep their current duties with no changes.
Local holiday notices list church programs across denominations. Evangelical Free hosts Sunday School and choir cantata on December 21 and 28 at 7 30 p m. Baptist offers Sunday School and choir cantata on December 22 and 20 at 8 p m. Immanuel Lutheran features aChildren's Program on December 24. Swede Plain and Polk Methodist list choir and Sunday School events on December 20 7 30 p m and December 21 8 p m respectively.
Polk high school unveils a 15 game basketball slate for the coming year with six lettermen back Denny Cramer Kenny Werner among them. The squad begins on December 1 on the home floor vs Bradshaw with game times set for 6 45 and 8 p m Admissions remain 60 35 and 15 cents. Carrol Shenk did not report for practice leaving seven rostered players and jersey numbers yet to be assigned.
In Des Moines Iowa Mrs Edith Heilman Polk County Campaign Director announced a 1954 March of Dimes goal of 75 million dollars almost half more than last winter's total. The drive aims to fund polio prevention and continued patient care while planning an experimental vaccine and gamma globulin use with Mothers March on Polio activities by 200 delegates from eight midwest states.
