Minister E E Pengelly announces services with worship at 10 00 and Sunday School at 11 00. He urges full seats and invites all to attend. A Union Thanksgiving Service will be held next Wednesday evening in a Town Church, open to the entire community.
German services next Sunday at 10 a.m. English at 11 a.m. Lutheran hour over K.P. ASB at 3:30 p.m. Walther League meeting at 7:30 p.m. Visitors are always welcome.

Elected precinct officers in Polk County include Assessors Hackberry Herman Thelen, Canada Henry W Johnson, Clear Creek Holger Nielsen, Valley Frank Triba, Osceola C E Jones, Stromsburg Joe W Newman, Pleasant Home Rolland Dahlin, Platte Guildford Bryan, Island Basil Barowlak, Road Overseers 1 Harper Peterson, 2 Wirt V Davis, 3 Geo Korger, 4 Joe Gryva, 54iWm, Campain 7 Eli Johnson, 7 Albin Dahlin, 8 Glen Willotts, 9 Felix Stachura.
The Polk Commercial Club met at Schultz Cafe with 35 members and guests enjoying dinner. The program at Viking Hall included musical numbers by Polk High School Bland directed by Rob Strickland and talks by county officials such as Representative Jay Wastings, County Attorney Phil Campbell, County Clerk John Anderson, Sheriff Gunnard Peterson, and District Court Clerk Tom Reece. A short business session concluded the evening.
A large crowd attended the Armistice Day program at the High School Auditorium on Friday November 11 featuring the school orchestra performing Marche Fantastique and American National Airs, soprano Doris McCoy, a reading of In Flanders Field by Sherniece Wilshusen, a Girls’ Sextet number Dear Land of Home, and an Armistice Day address by W Norton Osceola attorney. Norton called for patriotism in peace as well as war and argued that war never yields true victory.
The Polk County Farm Bureau holds its annual meeting Friday at the Rapp Hotel. A highlight is Mr. Klatt's showing of a Scottsbluff territory film from the State Department of Agriculture. Farmers choose three board members from Stromsburg Hackberry and Clear Creek Precincts. lunch is a covered dish affair.
The American Legion Auxiliary met November 14 at Mrs. Sophia Gestrine's home with sixteen members. They planned to order 500 poppies for Rehabilitation Hospital and Child Welfare funds. The Rehabilitation committee was to send gifts to the ape gift shop and to the veterans hospital. A two course luncheon was served by Mrs. Gestrine and Mrs. C R Peterson, with Thanksgiving decor.
The Christmas Activities Committee is appointed by Commercial Club president Carl Steelquist. Members named at last Monday’s meeting include F. W. Davis as chairman, with Glenn Bill W. R. Whitacre Rev. E. E. Pengelly Gordon Eno Clarence Bryant Hilding Strand and Gene Myers putting in as members.
Dr. D H Westfall took Franklin Stettner to Grand Island for an appendectomy at a local hospital. Mrs. Steele Patchin and Mrs. Blanche Patchin and Marie visited Grand Island Sunday. Stromsburg Methodist Church ladies hosted a Polk County women’s church meeting at Stromsburg with a missionary program and covered dish luncheon. Attendees included Rev E E Pengelly, Mrs C J McCoy, and Mrs Rolland Dahlin. Larson's Radio Shop offers tube testing and sales, Osceola. Phone 105. Osceola residents Leo Wurtz and Howard Herbes attended a Lincoln football game Saturday.
The Polk Commercial Club revealed a full Thanksgiving program on November 28 at the Viking Theatre. Afternoon bingo with prizes, evening card games, a parade in comic costumes, and a pep rally at the High School lead to the big football game at Stromburg Thursday. Stores will close for the holiday while drug stores stay open.

It parodies medical talk with humor about malnutrition and price depression and suggests “Harmony Honesty Industriousness and Frugality” as ancient cures. Polk loses its sixth straight, held to 15 points by Silver Creek on the local field. Silver Creek blocked a punt for a safety and added a second score on a double reverse in the second quarter, with a fourth quarter touchdown after a Polk fumble recovery. Next Friday Polk hosts Shelby High School.
Polk County farmers who applied for 1939 winter wheat insurance must pay by November 19 to avoid insuring against loss after it occurs. A total of 775 wheat producers, including landlords and tenants, filed applications by August 31. Spring wheat dates are not yet announced. Bankers statewide are lending on premiums with policy assignments and crop mortgages, per state officials.
About one hundred auxiliaries attended the 7th District Convention at Stromsburg on November 9. District President Mrs. Heflin chaired with state officers including Mrs. Kucera and Mrs. MacGlasson. David City won the history contest. a banquet and later joint dance followed a parade led by the high school band.
The T C W Club gathers Thursday with Mrs Frederickson and Mrs Johnson plus Billy visiting from Stromsburg. Dorcas meets Friday evening and Vivian Gullen letters are read. Helen Pierson and Wilma Peterson entertain. Edgar Peterson announces a birth November 12. Luther League meets Thursday with Joel Toline and Albert Johnson hosting. Farmers Union Social to be held next Tuesday November 22 at Sweden Home Hall with program and lunch. all welcome.
Miss Mary Kearney of Omaha stayed with H. J. Rinterman from Saturday to Sunday en route to Minneapolis to work as a civil service nurse at the Veterans Hospital. Mrs. Irene Walline and family, Lois Nelson, and Laverna Rystrom spent the weekend in Lincoln and attended the Nebraska Pittburg football game. Mrs. Vernon Henkle, formerly of Stromsburg, arrived from Los Angeles for a two month visit with relatives near York. Willie Johnson of Osceola had an appendectomy at Stromsburg hospital Tuesday night. Sunday dinner guests at the Eric Forslund home included Mr. and Mrs. Ludwig Rudeen, Mrs. Edith Lindstedt, Albert E. Johnson, Rev. and Mrs. Paul Rosell and son, and Mr. and Mrs. Hartwig Flodman and Rev. Hagstrom of Chicago.
Local high school students from Shelby performed a miscellany program in the auditorium on Wednesday. The one act play It Could Have Been Worse was presented by Floyd Taylor Virgil Willits Bernice Wilshusen Marjorie Person Maynard Schrader Algene Flodman and Gordon Carlson with Irene and Dorothy Whitacre and Ruth Nelson in the string trio. Miss Dorothy Pearson and Robert Strickland accompanied the group. The program was arranged by the Golden Red Conference to supplement last year's contests.
The Junior Class at Polk High School staged the play Sarah Sees It Through in the school auditorium on Wednesday evening. Miss Dorothy Pearson directed the performance with Elizabeth Smith assisting as student director, praised for the quality of the presentation by cast and staff.
Emma Bedient of Bradshaw visited her sister Mary Blair and family in Arborville. Local families hosted guests from York and Bradshaw as multiple households gathered for church events, meals, and Sunday visits. The Arborville Missionary Society met for a book review, with many neighbors sharing meals and calling on friends in Benedict, Osceola, Polk, and Lushton.
The Ladies of the Baptist Missionary Society gathered November 16 in the church parlors for an open meeting with husbands as special guests. Devotionals led by Mrs. R. M. Bailey opened a Thanksgiving themed program, featuring a play The Gift staged by Billy Allison Donald Hanquist Mrs H Horstman Goldie Fossburg Hope Bailey and Beverly Jones. A special bank offering was collected.
About 150 4-H youths and leaders met November 11 at the Methodist Church basement for a covered dish luncheon. Highlights included talks on 4-H experiences, awards presented by Howard Peterson, and moving pictures of the county fair parade. Polk County 4-H membership reached 273 with 90 percent completing projects.
Polk county will be represented at the statewide Pasture Forage Livestock meeting in Omaha on Tuesday November 22 announced by Agricultural Agent Peterson. A Polk delegation of cooperators will attend as part of 1200 farmers enrolled statewide last spring. The Omaha gathering closes the 1938 program promoting better farming and balanced livestock and feed supplies with honorees and a banquet.
