Reports collect notable yields from farmers including Clarence Creech 60 bu per acre on 107 acres, Ralph Fisher 62 bu on 40 acres, Virgil Bush 100 bu on 15 acres. Overall average yield cited at 75 bushels.
Polk snooker players beat Geneva 393 to 351 in the first round of a new league. Pete Johnson scored 86 and Virgil Bush 72 for Polk. Teams in the league include Polk Clarks Central City York Geneva and Sutton with Polk set to meet Clarks on Tuesday November 7 and Central City visiting the following Tuesday.
James Hatfield a Lincoln Telephone repairman claimed the state title after shooting at a pheasant south of York. He fired both barrels at a bird but found it was a decoy planted by a farmer who had watched him.
A Week of Prayer program at Swede Plain Church was held on Wednesday November 1 with ten ladies in attendance. Rev Nels Pearson spoke briefly and altar worship was prepared by Mrs Paul Walker and Mrs Clifford Carlson. The Prayer Service offering totaled about $70 and special music was provided by the Swede Plain ladies trio Fijell Adelson and Lind.
The Faithful Workers will hold their next meeting November 16 with Mrs. Emory Cramer.
News of our servicemen reports John Holmes of the 1st Battalion 160th Infantry Regiment 40th Division at Camp Cook California is awarded a card emblematic of Star Of The Week for his pass catching and pass interceptions. Jim Klingsporn and Gaylen Holmes previously received the honor.
The Pork Woman's Club hosted a Halloween masquerade for husbands and school faculty Monday in the lodge hall. A scary hallway led to a main room with fortune telling and autumn decorations. Guests guessed costumes, bunco games offered prizes, and a pie ice cream and coffee lunch followed.
The University of Nebraska expresses gratitude to Polk and its band members, school officials, parents and citizens for their part in Band Day. The letter highlights the event as a lasting Cornhusker tradition and a meaningful experience for students and the community.
Northwestern University bulletin notes Ted Alfred from Polk as one of 92 Nebraska students in the Graduate College among 10 000 full time students. Phillip Sack of Crete visited the O F Alfred home overnight Thursday.
Freshman class members and sponsor Miss Lucado enjoyed a bewitching Halloween party hosted by Sondra Hill and Shirley Stevens. The scavenger ride, haunted house stops, and a gypsy room fueled by costumes and spooky décor ended with a 10 13 Hobo lunch as 38 frolicers returned home.
Rev Max Cristopher of Sutton Federated Church leads the Week of Evangelism November 12 to 17 at the Methodist Church. Swede Plain and Polk churches unite for 8 p.m. meetings with 6 10 p.m. supper, training, and home visits. Frank Tauriella directs the youth mass choir at 4 p.m. rehearsal November 19 in York.
The Pleasant Home 4-H club gathered at Stanley Hanquist home on October 27 for a demonstrations lesson then a social with football and lunch by Mrs. Hanquist. The next meeting is scheduled for November 13 with Dickie and Jerry Harless.
Mr and Mrs Arthur Branting of North Platte spent Sunday evening with Mr and Mrs Will Kroger. Mr and Mrs Oscar Sundberg entertained guests from Adams from Thursday until Sunday including Mrs Laura Zu ver and family. Weekend guests included Janice Sundberg Callaway and Charlene Fuller Lincoln. The group shared Sunday dinner with Mr and Mrs Gene Bauer Sutton.
In Lincoln on Thursday November 2 central and eastern Nebraska farm cooperatives met with Emil Wilsusen of Hordville Kenneth Olson of Stromsburg and O R Hennings of Stromsburg representing the Farmers Union Co op Oil Co of Polk County More than 250 attended the evening session where Howard A Cowden of Kansas City president and general manager of Consumers Cooperative Association spoke on The Place of Cooperatives in a Defense Economy A panel on educational activities included Walter Krohn Uehling Homer Osborne Auburn and William Muinchow Waverly A FFA member Glen S Fox outlined four common handicaps to co ops including excess credit and outdated merchandising Er nest Young of distribution noted 1949 to 194 year product increases and possible shortages in farm machinery while co op petroleum products should be ample Other regional speakers were Harry Appleby Leslie C Roenigk and Merlin G Miller Ernest Uehling conducted the morning session and G W Erickson presided in the afternoon and evening
The Faithful Workers Club met at Mrs. Earl Stevens home with 16 members and three visitors. Mrs Charles Norquest led a lesson on Travel and introduced Mrs. Marius Terp of York who spoke on her trip to Denmark Norway and Sweden with notes on customs industries and geography. She displayed photos and antiques.
Mr and Mrs Donald Hahn and their son arrive with Mrs Carlson of Minneapolis to visit Hannah Hahn and relatives. Paul Gustafson, stationed at Fort Riley, spends weekend with Mr and Mrs Arthur Gustafson. Mass Ruby Walgreen of Omaha joins Sunday dinner at the same residence.
The First Baptist Church of Polk welcomes the Eastern Area Platte Valley Baptist Churches Sunday School Rally. Registration at 3 00 pm precedes instruction led by Rev William Topper former Bible School secretary and Edgewater Baptist pastor. Instructors include Rev Paul Lindgren and Rev Roger Walters. Evening service at 730 open to public.
Polk High School defeated St. Marys 37 to 6 at Grand Island as Jim Klingsporn broke free for several runs and scored a touchdown. The rapid game sparked talk the clock ran long, but Polk shielded its players from injury. The season ends Friday November 10 at Edgar.
The Polk School community honored Mr Bradley sponsor of the Sophomore class with a surprise party in the gym Tuesday as he reports for a Marines physical exam on Monday at Hastings. Students presented an identification bracelet and a faculty bill as a going away gift. A National Education Week convocation was held Wednesday with parents and friends viewing classroom work and pupil exhibits.
The Fourth District Woman's Club convention met in York on November 2 and 3 with Polk County members Mesdames McNaught Phillips Wilhelms and I Cramer attending the Thursday session. Highlights included speeches by Mrs M Stewart Lincoln and Dr Mary Bitner of the State Health Department, tours of local sites, a banquet with Mrs Hasebrook, and an entertainment by Mrs Orville Entenman of Omaha.
Miss Marcelyn Erickson of Hordville and Dale Hanquist were married at the Baptist Church in Hordville Sunday October 29. Mrs Hanquist has been employed at the Telephone office in Central City and Mr Hanquist is employed in Hamilton County.
This Week's Bouquet salutes Chas G Dahlgren of Polk Nebraska who just turned 85. Born in Sweden, he homesteaded near Polk, worked for Burlington Railways and Union Pacific, and raised a family with daughters in Oklahoma and Fremont. He values scrapbooks, memories, and has long memberships in IOOF and Woodmen of America.
