Summer Recreation Program Starts Wet

The local summer recreation program weathered rainouts last week with more games postponed. A Lit tle Six League doubleheader versus Osceola is set for Sunday evening June 2 at the local field. Donations to the recreation fund rose to $315 with $5 from Don Ostberg, while auction items for June 6 sale near the former Home Service Store grow.

Polk Summer School Opens With 32 Enrolled

Polk Summer School launched a six week session with 32 pupils from grades 2 through 7 enrolled. Math Science reviews basic addition and subtraction while Language Arts explores new reading material. Archery technique and health lectures feature in Physical Education.

Old Times Day in Osceola Draws Historic Program

Osceola hosts its fifth annal Old Times Day on Saturday June 1 with historian Robert Manley headlining at 8 p m in the high school auditorium free admission. A 2 p m parade features displays of antiques and pioneer items, plus a pancake feed at 3 p m and museum hours. A free week’s vacation and a small TV set are given away during the evening program.

Berggren Named Exchange Manager for Stromsburg Office

Robert H. Berggren has been appointed Exchange Manager at Stromsburg by Lincoln Tel. & Tel. Co. He began duties May 27, succeeding Loal A. Genrich. Berggren, born in Mead, Nebraska, started as a groundman in Wahoo in 1949 and progressed through roles in Wahoo, Ashland, and back to Wahoo as a switchman in 1966. He and wife Ann have two daughters and attend Wahoo Methodist Church.

The Rainbow Rebekah Lodge of Polk hosted guests at their regular Thursday meeting. Assembly Warden Janice Simmonds of Dawson attended as a special guest and presented a school of instruction. Colfax Rebekah Lodge members from Central City also joined. Plans set for the next meeting at the IOOF Home in York. Pot luck lunch served with Christol Cramer and Eleanor Hatfield as coffee hostesses.
