Polk village will keep stores open Wednesdays starting June with 10 pm closing. No band concerts this summer. Merchants Night offers free admission for under 12 and 26 cents for adults at Polk Theatre. Municipal band disbanded for season due to waning interest and high costs over $500 annually.
Lois Johnson daughter of Mr and Mrs Phillip Johnson is among 144 Nebraska Wesleyan University graduates at the May 27 commencement. She earned a Bachelor of Arts with minors in psychology music English and social studies and will teach in Lincoln Elementary School next year. She is a 1948 Polk High School graduate.
Rev and Mrs Milford E Olson of Chicago announce the approaching marriage of their daughter Marilyn Ann to Vincent E Stranberg son of Mr and Mrs Emil Stranberg of Polk Nebraska on Monday June 16 Marilyn is a student at Trinity Seminary and Bible College in Chicago
Alumni of Polk High gather for the annual banquet with 225 expected attendees. Officers are President Ken Bedient Vice President RoDonna Lindholm and Secretary Treasurer Merle Stromberg. The theme is section of 62 and the program promises political discussion and the initiation of this year’s graduates into the Polk Alumni Association.
The closing committee of the Commercial Club announced that all stores normally observing closed dates will be closed all day Friday Memorial Day May 30 to participate in services honoring those who died serving our country. The Polk Theatre will keep its Memorial Eve showing as scheduled. Merchants thank patrons for cooperation on closed days.
The American Legion Post No 160 in Nebraska elected Henry Kisler as Commander for the coming year, replacing Everett Green who served as acting commander. Dean Myers was named post Adjutant, Robert Steenbock as Finance Officer, and Max Jones as Vice Commander, with installation planned at the June meeting by visiting post officials.
The Rebekah Lodge held its regular meeting on Thursday evening May 22. New officers were elected: Ella Cramer Noble Grand and Esther Larson Vice Grand. Installation of the new officers will occur in July.
The American Legion National Executive Committee authorized use of poppy funds for disabled veterans of the Korean conflict not yet discharged from the armed forces. Funds from memorial poppies are normally reserved for rehabilitation and child welfare, with about three million dollars contributed on Poppy Day, May 24.
Announcement of the birth of Deborah Ellen Bradley weighing 6 pounds 10 ounces to Mr and Mrs Jessa Bradley of Omaha. Mr Bradley is noted as a former commercial teacher in Polk two years ago.
Polk Midgets coached by Knute Johnson lost 6 to 0 to Central City Hustlers in the season opener. Strong fielding by Polk featured Charles Kong at short. Ken Bowers pitched four hits over seven innings while Polk managed two hits. Starting lineup included Light at third, Shenk at short, Widga at first, Cramer, Long, McNaught, Hahn, Bowers, and Light. Reserves were Shenk, Johnson, Bruce Johnson, and Don Widga.
Memorial Day services to be held Friday under American Legion Post 160. In Polk the event starts at 10 AM with Rev. C. W. Long of Immanuel Lutheran Church delivering the address. Arborville hosts its ceremonies at 2 PM at the Town Hall with Rev. Paul Nelson of Stromsburg as speaker.
Mystery names appear in Polk business ads this week. Two readers will win free Polk Theatre admission by clipping the ad with their name and presenting it at the box office. Prize valid for the week after issue. tickets nontransferable.
John Wochner reported five hundred birds dying on his York county property last Friday. State and county officials, including agent Hecht, investigate autopsies and field analyses to identify the cause. Blackbirds and other species such as starlings robins sparrows thrushes are affected, with corn rootworm control methods suspected as a factor.
The Legion beat the Co-op Oilers 11 in the seventh thanks to a dropped ball in a late rally. Don Widge pitched for the Legion with Bud Bolton and Wendell Appleton sharing mound duty for the Oilers. Wilhelms hit the Legion’s only homer. Johnson’s topped the Polk Bankers 8 7 as Lavern Schulze belted a late round tripper. Bernie Land started for the Bankers and Dick Sage Horn pitched for Johnson.
The state 4 H office announced Sheralee Hill has been awarded a Carl Raymond Grayr scholarship of $100 to the University of Nebraska by the Union Pacific Railroad. She earned the honor for her 4 H club work and records and attends 4 H club week in Lincoln this week. She also won a Folgers Coffee prize trip for outstanding 4 H work.
The Country Woman's Club met Thursday afternoon at Mrs Leslie Adelson's home. Members enjoyed bingo after two musical selections a piano solo by Sharon Adelson and a vocal solo by Mrs Willard Adelson. Lunch was served to nineteen ladies. The annual club picnic is planned for June 22 at Polk Park.
A girl born Tuesday May 27 at Stromsburg hospital to Mr and Mrs Dean Myers weighs 7 lb 15 oz and both mother and baby are fine. Earlier a son weighing 7 lb 6 oz was born Monday May 26 at St Francis hospital in Grand Island to Mr and Mrs Harold Kuck. mother is Rose Bhn formerly.
