Hordville Couple Wed at Marquette Parsonage

Hordville couple Miss Iola Clarice Bengtson and Melburn E. Fowler wed Thursday evening May 5 at the Evangelical United Brethren parsonage in Marquette. Rev A P Vannice performed the ceremony at 8 p.m. Attendants were Mrs Jack Stephen and Melvin Fowler of Omaha. The couple will reside on a farm near Hordville after a brief wedding trip.

Baker on plane crew of new Navy Secretary

Mrs. C. J. McCoy received a call from her son-in-law B. J. Baker who was in Lincoln with his parents. Baker was part of a Navy plane crew sent to Omaha to bring Francis P. Matthews back to Washington D C. Matthews has been selected by President Truman to be Secretary of the Navy.

Polk Grades Win Goldenrod Conference Track Meet

Polk Grades led by Gaylen Holmes with four firsts won the Goldenrod Conference Grade Track Championship scoring 23 points. Genoa 14, Clarks 11 5-6, Osceola 61-6. Event winners include Holmes in the 75 yard dash and 100 yard low hurdles, with Holmes also taking high jump. Shot put winner Holmes. Relay won by Genoa with Osceola second and Clarks third.

Seed Certification Deadlines Reach for Polk County Farmers

Polk County Extension warns of 1949 seed certification deadlines with June 1 for wheat oats barley sweet clover brom egrass and rye and June 20 for hybrid corn followed by August 1 for alfalfa red clover sorghums soybeans and native grasses. A $5 farm and $1 per field fee plus per acre charges applies with full forms and inspection. A rat eradication program by Stromsburg Civic Improvement Club joins local efforts and entomologists predict grasshopper hatch in southern Nebraska with early control advised.

Friendly Families Club Meeting at Doremus Home

The Friendly Families Club met on May 18 at Mrs. Arthur Doremus's home with nine members present. The group discussed articles for use at the Polk County Fair and enjoyed a luncheon served by the hostess.

Polk County Men Honored by Omaha Chamber Banquet

Three Polk county men were among 40 honored guests at the Omaha Chamber of Commerce banquet at the Livestock Exchange Building. George Mace 88 Osceola John Adelson 81 Polk and William Stevens 78 Polk shipped cattle to Omaha markets for 50 years or more and received engraved certificates and carnation boutonnieres after interviews. Carl Dose of Hampton formerly of Polk was also honored.

Early insect control urges on hoppers

Entomologists warn cheap efficient killing of newly hatched hoppers is crucial as they are weak and voracious. They advise poison spraying with benzene hexachloride chlordane or toxaphene at 25 percent on weeded egg beds fence rows and ditch banks. Farmers should return empty 2 4-D containers to aid distribution. A 4 H trainer meeting in Columbus discussed projects and materials for county leaders.

4-H Sunday Observed at Local Methodist Church

4 H Sunday was observed at the Methodist Church during the morning service. Fifteen members of the Pleasant Homemakers and Merry Makers Clubs sat as a group with leaders Mrs Hahn Mes Anderson and Mrs Strand and recited the 4 H pledge. Sondra Hill and Marilyn Hahn of the Pleasant Homemakers sang two 4 H songs and the Merry Makers sang a song.

RITES HELD FOR POLK SERVICEMAN TED ECKDAHL

The body of Theo E Eckdahl a Polk serviceman and brother of Mrs Lloyd Hanquist and Dave Eckdahl arrived today. He served as tail gunner on a bomber and was killed when the plane was shot down over Germany. Funeral services are set for 2:00 p.m. Sunday at Brauer Funeral Home Polk with burial in Swede Plain cemetery. American Legion Post to oversee services.

Ekstrom and Carlson to Receive Luther College Associate Degrees

Flying Farmers Breakfast Attended by Lincoln Pilots
