Wheat and fertilizer tests in Polk County

Polk County extension notes report a wheat plot near Osceola showing strongly higher yields where phosphate and ammonium nitrate were used together versus nitrogen alone. Other items cover a Shelby 4-H Livestock club formation, 1000 debt cost chart, 2 4 D farm usage, and a poultry TB survey with high reactor rates in some flocks.

To date we have 23 4-H clubs organized showing growing youth involvement and community engagement across the county.

Shrine Circus Outings And Local Visits In District 66

District 66 pupils and families attended the Shrine Circus in Grand Island on Wednesday and visited nearby sites. Residents visited kin in Clarks and York, hosted dinners and tea events, and joined a bridal shower in York for Mrs. Jerry Jones. The Arborville Missionary Society met with program leader Mrs. Wayne Lindholm.

Polk School All-County Picnic Invitation

Patrons and friends of Polk Schools are invited to the All- School Picnic at Polk park Friday at noon. Each family provides a basket lunch for their group, with hot coffee ice water and ice cream provided. Games and contests will be held in the afternoon.

Arborville Pastor Promotes Rogation Day Observance

Rev. E. Earle Eaton, pastor at Arborville and member of the Nebraska State Congregational Conference Town and Country Committee, is promoting the Rogation festival including Rural Life Sunday among Congregational ministers in Nebraska. He circulates clergy statewide, distributes literature, and coordinates rural urban pulpit exchanges. Eaton previously chaired Pennsylvania Rural Church Commission.

Mother Daughter Banquet Held at Hordville

About 175 attended the Mother and Daughter Banquet at Hordville Tuesday evening. Spring flowers and rainbow streamers adorned the tables and a sumptuous meal was served. Toastmistress Mrs. Hershel Shenk led the event with the Mother Goose theme.

Mrs Mervin Shenk Installed WSCS President for 1949 50

Mrs Mervin Shenk was installed as the 1949 50 president of the WSCS at a May church basement meeting. Mrs Albert Sundberg became vice president with Mrs Merle Stromberg as secretary and Mrs Paul Strand as treasurer. Rev A C Bates led the service.

Polk Eighth Graders Graduated at Osceola Ceremony

Fourteen Polk County eighth graders received diplomas at the promotion exercises in Osceola Saturday afternoon. County Superintendent Olive McBeth led the proceedings with students including Darryl Cramer, Robert Cuda, Marilyn Hahn, Virginia Harding, and others. Dean Lindburg earned a diploma but could not attend due to medical treatment for a skull fracture at Stromsburg hospital.

Libbys Canned Food Sale Draws Large Crowd

A fine crowd attended Stromberg's Libbys canned food sale on Friday and Saturday. Free coffee and lunch were provided to about 450 friends and patrons Saturday afternoon and evening.

4-H Club Growers Plan Training and Events

About 250 members organized with a few still to hear from. Polk County Home Economics 4-H Leaders and the Home Agent attended a Columbus training meeting May 14 and were assigned to project classes. The Green Promise film for 4-H members plays at Stromsburg Theater May 22 to 24. On May 9 near Lone Star a new Lone Star Project Club formed with 15 new members. Mrs. Louis Schmidt elected president. A Leader Training Center may open at Shelby and a new club near Shelby is hoped for.

Good Neighbor Deed: Neighbors Plow 40 Acres for Paul Coover

Fifteen neighbors assisted on Monday afternoon by plowing about 40 acres for Paul Coover who had been hospitalized recently.

Rev Eaton Leads College Public Relations Drive

The Rev Earle Eaton, interim philosophy and religions professor at Nebraska Central College, handles public relations this season. He visits high schools, speaks on vocational guidance, and recruits students. In two weeks he spoke to assemblies in Polk, Osceola, Stromsburg, Hardville, Marquette, Aurora, Silver Creek, Clarks, Chapman, Central City, Palmer, Archer, Genoa, Fullerton, Belgrade and Dannebrog.

Polk High School Holds Baccalaureate Service and Class Night

Polk High School held baccalaureate services at the Polk auditorium on Sunday May 15 with a processional led by seniors and two juniors Phyllis Rhode and Bur dette Flodman. Rev Milford Olson delivered the sermon A Testimony to the Christian Faith while the music department provided performances. Class Night featured a garden themed program with Donna Lindholm giving the Class History Elaine Klingsborn delivering the Class Prophesy Gordon Johnson named Class Valedictorian and receiving a Regent's Scholarship from the University of Nebraska. Clydella Baker gave the Salutatorian Address.

Commencement Exercises Set for May 19 at Peru State

Thursday May 19 will host graduation with Marilyn Dahlin and Ralph Kahler leading the seniors. Dr. William L. Nicholas president of Peru State Teachers College will deliver the commencement address. Diplomas will be presented by Everett Green president of the Board of Education. Music by the music department.

Luther College Choir Returns From Tour

The Luther College Acapella Choir completed a two week tour through Nebraska South Dakota Minnesota Iowa and Illinois. Members Rosalie Ekstrom and Donald Forss of Polk were part of the trip.

Open House Visits Highlight Nebraska Lustron Home

Wednesday visitors to the D. C. Morris home included Mrs. Lauren Calhoun and children and several others. Monday business visits took Mr. and Mrs. Don Lindholm and the Lindholms to Omaha and Council Bluffs. Grand Island guests attended the Lustron Home Open House, noting it as Nebraska's first porcelain enamelled steel house.
