Memorial Day services are planned at Swede Home Cemetery on Tuesday May 30 with Pastor Stanley Floth as speaker. Calvary Lutheran church choir will sing. Visitors include families from Osceola and McCook, and local residents attended weekend gatherings.
Hans O. Jensen announces two farm policy meetings in Nebraska to gather input from county area and state farm leaders and farmers. The first will be May 25 at the Center for Continuing Education in Lincoln, and the second June 2 in Ogallala both at 7:00 PM. A report will relay comments to Secretary Freeman who seeks to ease the farm price and cost-price squeeze. Special invitations have been sent to farm leaders and area farmers are invited to attend.
The Baptist Missionary Society gathered at the church on May 11 with Mrs. Emma Anderson as devotional leader. Mrs. Wilbur Whitacre gave a special music solo while Mrs. Wendell Shaw presented a Mother’s Day program. Thirteen Polk High School girl graduates and their mothers attended, seated at a rose and gold table with a May pole centerpiece. Hostesses were Mrs. O. F. Alfred Mrs. Orlie Miller Mrs. Martin Jones and Mrs. P. W. Aker. guest hostess was Mrs. Willard Lindburg.
Over 3400 trees were planted this past month on Polk County farms under annually funded ACP programs. Most plantings form farmstead windbreaks or livestock belts with some Christmas trees and ornamental plantings. Supervising was Greg Johnson of Osceola with Soil Conservation Service help. major work by Bloom, Kresha, Richards, Meister, Sealey, Whitmore, and Stachura.
Mr and Mrs Arthur Johnson of York and Mr and Mrs Ray Schock of Benedict joined Mr and Mrs Oliver Baker for a Friday evening visit.
The Swede Plain WSCS met in the church basement on May 10 led by Mrs. Walter Stohl. President Mrs. Lester Widga opened the meeting with program duties by Mrs. Donald Dahlin and Mrs. Widga. The group sang hymns and held pledge and candle lighting services, with Rev. Patten conducting officer installation and closing prayer. Hostesses were Russell Fjell and Mrs Verland Widga. An Earl Waggoner home visit and a Sunday dinner at the Gustafsons are noted.
Bertha Brazda celebrated her birthday with a Sunday dinner and supper at the James Brazda Sr. home. Guests included Alfred and Mrs Brejda of Western, Victor and Mrs Vesely of Wilber, Donald and Mrs Schulk and family of De Witt, Gary and Mrs Wesley of Lincoln, Dennis Wesley and boys of Crete, Rudolph and Mrs Homolka of Wilber, James Brazda Jr. and Rickie, Robert Brazda and family, Glen Brazda and family, and Keith Kenny and Roger Brazda.
The Home Society met May 17 at Mrs. Ray Werner's home with 12 members present. Poems were read and Mrs. Werner performed on the organ. Mrs. Grant Johnson received the hostess gift. A pot-luck lunch followed.
