A general Sunday night shower drenched Nebraska farm areas, minor wind damage reported. Polk County received about half an inch with strong winds, while areas north and south of town saw up to two inches, enough to offset wind damage and aid crops.
Max Peterson reports the Alumni Association prepares for the 25th anniversary banquet with many alumni and spouses attending. Committees include Menu Jo Ostberg Victoria Glasser Alice Baack Sylvia Sandell Bernice Miller. Program Grayce Hahn Gertrude Nelson. Decorating Emyline Deuker Imogene Hanquest Goldie Fossberg Donald Peterson Merlin Wright Kenneth Willits Lois Cockle Rachel Schrader Harold Green Eldon Anderson. Entertainment WM Allison Mildred McDaniel Marjorie Nelson. A galley display features pictures and rodeo motifs as interest grows and a camera crew is expected to cover scenes.
The Polk high school Baccalaureate service honored the graduating class with Rev. Bailey delivering the sermon titled The Race of Life. The program included processional invocation hymn scripture anthem sermon benediction and recessional led by Mr. Strickland and Rev. Pengelly. Commencement exercises follow this evening in the high school auditorium.
Local pageant highlights include Salutatory by Phyllis Steelquist Class History by Ruth Johnson and Valedictory by Irene Whitacre. Miss Lindburg and Irene Whitacre perform, Duane Nyberg leads class will and Ruth Johnson accepts class gift.
A May 23 supper for the eighth grade class at the B A Cowgill home in Clarks was hosted by the teacher and Mr. and Mrs. Charles Smith. Outdoor games entertained students as the group returned home. scholarship pins were awarded to Darlene Johnson, Kenneth Davis and Betty Branting.
Local churches announce schedules for Sunday worship with memorial observances, Pentecost services, and youth events. Wheat crop insurance reports show 240 loss claims filed in Polk County, with 140 adjusted across 1100 acres and 465 policies active.
Methodist and First Baptist churches announce a Union Memorial Day service at the Baptist Church for 11:00. Rev. E. E. Pengelly and Rev. J. Oliveira speak at 10:45 and 3:20 Friday. Vacation Bible School begins June 5 for two weeks with Miss Lillie Lind as superintendent. Regular services and midweek prayer meeting are listed.
Patrons and former teachers invited to a 63rd anniversary program for the school foundry on Saturday June 3 with 1 00 start. Luther League hosts Friday with Harry Bodine and Henry Samuelson families. T C W Club meets May 26. notice of ay change. Various visits and dinners noted with local residents and churches. Women’s Missionary Convention set for May 25 in Stromsburg Lutheran Church starting 9 45 AM continuing through day.
A neighbor praises the village council and park commissioners for enhancing parks through timely care of grass, trees, and shrubs. He highlights Union Pacific, Main Street Boulevard, City Park, Mission Camp Grounds, Wright Field, school grounds, tennis courts, and the new Women’s Club Park as loved community spaces and urges Memorial Day decor to honor fallen loved ones.
Laura Jane Jacobson a Hastings College junior sat soprano in a joint recital with Grand Island junior Oline Lindemann Monday in the college Little Theater. Jacobson a college choir soloist studied with Hayes M. Fuhr and sang eight selections.
Mr and Mrs Alfred Gustafson were Sunday dinner guests at the home of Mr and Mrs Oscar Gustafson. They also visited Mr and Mrs Carroll Ericksen at Hordville. Others attending dinner were Mr and Mrs Will Cohagen and family of Hordville, Mr and Mrs Glenn Green and Walter Green and Harold at Clyde Green's home.
Union Memorial Services will be held at the Baptist Church at 11 o clock Sunday morning with participation from all local churches. A large congregation is expected and special music is arranged. Rev. E. E. Pengelly of the M. E. Church will deliver the sermon.
Polk defeated Lone Star 23 to 1 on Sunday May 21 with five and one half innings. Pitcher Max Quick allowed one hit and hit two home runs. Lawhead D Peterson Cowgill Ponitz contributed with home runs and triples as Polk prepares to travel to Duncan next Sunday.
Wheat parity payments for 970 farmers and landlords in Polk County have been received by the ACP office. County chairman Robert C. Taddiken reports total receipts of $29,508.83 with individual checks ranging from $2.28 to $199.58 and an average around $30.00. The payments are for those in compliance with the farm program on wheat by December 15, 1938, representing about 75 percent of the total parity checks due.
The annual 4 H Club Week at the College of Agriculture in Lincoln brings 300 to 400 club members and 4 Polk County leaders for educational and recreational activities. Attendees include Betty Leigh McMeekin Shelby Vance Bard Louis Willits and Maurine Schmoker. The week features tours of Lincoln banquet trips to Omaha with Friday rail service and headline speakers Mrs. David Sims Chancellor Boucher and Dr A B Graham. The theme is Our Rural Heritage and daily club radio broadcasts on KFAB will air during the program.
The Grasshopper Association led by August P Anderson and Elton Berck has completed a bait mixing machine built largely at the Oberg Blacksmith shop in Osceola. Bait will be sold at Pierson Feed Mill in Osceola starting Thursday May 25 and every Tuesday and Friday after, at 25 cents per sack with trade-ins, or 30 cents at local committeemen locations plus 5 cents for transportation.
The High Prairie Homemakers gathered at the home of Mrs. Dan Hinkle on May 16. New member Anna Marie Fjell joined the group while Mrs. Hinkle hosted and served lunch afterward. Zoe Ann Samuelson, News Reporter.
