The Pure Food Grocery showcases a Silver Spike Dude Ranch scene with a log cabin hotel and cow puncher as part of a high school alumni tribute to be highlighted at the May 29 Silver Spike celebration. Miss Mildred McDaniel is credited with the display. The Farmers Store window features Polk high school’s early buildings and its first graduating class. Alumni are urged to view both windows before May 19 to avoid a penalty for red hankles.

Two Corn Tests Planted in Polk County This Week
Polk County agricultural reports two corn tests planted last week at Homer Brigham farm Shelby and Willard Lindburg farm Polk with 25 and 22 varieties. Polk county farmers observe a wheat test plot on Lynn Brigham farm two miles west and five north of Shelby where 100 wheats from local growers are grown. Each wheat carries a number and Agricultural Agent Peterson will confirm numbers soon. A highway 30 alternate sign advertises the test as part of a cooperative program with the Polk County Farm Bureau Extension Service Nebraska Experiment Station and Nebraska Grain Improvement Association. Mrs. Jack Hottell aged 23 of Walden Colorado died Sunday night May 14. Burial followed in Shelby at United Brothers church with interment in Shelby cemetery. She was born in Shelby, daughter of Mr and Mrs P J Ball, and left a husband a son and her parents.

More than 79.7 percent of terop land in Polk county will be farmed under the national farm program this year. County AC committee chair Robert Taddiken says 90 percent of farmers signed farm plans, up from 40 percent last year, with 1663 of 1850 ownerships indicating intent to comply.
