Baccalaureate Services Held At Polk High School

Baccalaureate services for Polk high school 1917 graduates were held in the school auditorium Sunday evening. Rev A C Bates delivered the sermon titled Quest for the Best. Musical numbers included a girls sextette and a piano solo by Arthur Bates.

Alumni Banquet Set With School Days Theme At Polk High

Polk High School hosts an alumni banquet May 28 at 7 30 p m in the high school auditorium with the class of 1917 1927 1937 and 1947 honored. Officers are President Mrs Gilbert Blase Vice President Mrs Glenn Hill and Secretary Raymond Peterson. Committee chairmen include Mrs Ernest Salchow Decoration Mrs Richard Sealey Initiator Everett Green Invitation Mrs Marvin Fredrickson Dishes Mrs Oscar Jones Tables Lloyd Stromberg. Swede Plain ladies will serve the banquet dinner.

Sunday Evening Visits And Local Events In Polk County

Local residents hosted and visited in Polk area homes including the Carlson Small and Timmons households. Numerous errands, hospital visits, and social gatherings occurred with church trustees, showers, and guests from Stromsburg Hampton and Kearney. A Maytag Washer giveaway by The Polk American Legion on May 24 at Polk band stand is announced with tickets available in town.

Fredrickson Plans Major Makeover For Implement Co.

Marvin Fredrickson is expanding and rebuilding the Fredrickson Implement Company building. The project adds a modern all under one roof facility with space for large trucks, new brick wall facing the highway, and rear entry. The work marks the third extensive renovation in a short period, with a ten year goal to avoid further hammering.

Local Social Notes From Benedict Area

Sunday dinners and visits mark the week in the Benedict area as families entertain relatives and neighbors. The Arborville Missionary Society met at Mrs. Mervin Shenk while District 81 and District 66 held school picnics. Visitors include Mrs. Wm Bahel from Orting Washington and WCE Bedient of Wichita Kansas visiting relatives.

Memorial Day Closures Reported by Polk Commercial Club

All business houses except those that normally stay open on holidays will be closed all day Friday May 30th in observance of Memorial Day. Polk Commercial Club states the status for the local business community.

May 20 deadline for wheat oats flax and brome grass certification has passed due to slow growing conditions. Limited future filings may be accommodated subject to inspection staff capacity. Lincoln brome grass seed certification urged from local producers with 1947 production. many small grain acres may miss certification causing stock limits. Also spraying guidance for pears and apples and reports of tree blight with advice to report infestations. Funeral notice for Adam Deuker and local wedding and school notices follow.

Poppy Day Campaign Posted By American Legion Auxiliary

Poppies will be sold on Polk streets Saturday afternoon and evening May 24 by the American Legion Auxiliary to honor dead. Volunteers note the paper flowers are handmade by veterans and their crippled hands, with wire strands, for Poppy Day observance.

Polk County reports a wet spring with two more soaking rains this week. Farmers delaying corn planting due to soggy ground and cool temperatures, hindering soil warming and field work across the county.

Death of Emma Josephine Peterson

Emma Josephine Peterson daughter of Jonas and Christina Peterson was born in Galva Illinois October 14 1871 and died May 10 1947 in Stromsburg Nebraska at age 7 years 5 months 27 days. She lived on a farm near Stromsburg after marrying John H Anderson on January 6 1891 and had seven children. Funeral services were held at the home and Methodist Church with ministers Rev G A Randall and pallbearers Norris Reuben Forrest Irvin Rod ney and Paul Anderson. Interment was in Stromsburg cemetery. Survivors include three daughters Mrs Nina Knorr Mrs Mildred Hultgren Mrs Lillian James and four sons Norris Reuben Forrest and Irvin plus many relatives.
