Arthur Bates Wins Superior at District Music Meet

Arthur Bates of Polk High won first place in baritone horn at the Ninth Regional Division national music contest in St Joseph Missouri. He was accompanied by instructor S A Ramp and accompanist Lois Johnson. Bates is the son of Rev and Mrs A C Bates. The win brings great honor to Polk High School.

Polk High Band to Perform Free Concert May 16

Polk High School band hosts a free Friday evening concert May 16 at 8 05 in the auditorium to thank supporters of the uniform fund drive. New uniforms for 1946 1947 will be checked in, with a net magazine campaign profit of 159 32 from 186 subscriptions plus top sellers named.

Convicts Captured in Dunning After Car Theft Case

A car stolen from Seward was found in Dunning Nebraska with a Polk County license plate. The owner Mr Cerny reported the back plate missing from a car at his Donald Cerny farm seven miles north of 638 Ceola. Convicts who escaped from Lincoln penitentiary were later arrested and linked to the theft through the car and plate substitution.

Athletic Banquet Honors 1947 Teams and Pep Club

Large Polk Commercial Club event at the high school auditorium honored the 1947 football and basketball teams and the Girls Pep Club. Everett W. Green presided, with musical numbers by the boys glee club and Arthur Bates. Douglas Russell spoke on Nebraska prospects. Kansas State game films were shown. BaptistMissionary Society arranged the dinner with prompt service.

Obituary of William Kisler Polks Early Settler Dies at 80

William Kisler born October 11 1866 in Nobbe County Indiana died May 6 1947 at his Polk Nebraska home. He came to Nebraska in 1872 homesteaded near Polk and Arborville. He married Bertha Dobberstein February 25 1896 and had six children. Survived by two daughters Ida Green and Verna Gibson two sons Edward Virgil Henry eight grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Funeral at the Polk Methodist Church with interment in Arborville cemetery.

Nebraska City Fort Kearny Cut-off Opens Western Freight Route

The Nebraska City Fort Kearny cut-off emerged in the 1850s as a shortcut for freight to Utah. Russell Majors and Waddell used it in 1858 under a government contract, turning wagon traffic along the Platte into a profitable path. By 1863 the route carried heavy traffic, wearing wide ruts across the prairie.

Burgess Zeising Tie The Knot In Lincoln Ceremony

Charles C Burgess of Polk and Anna M Zeising of Philadelphia were quietly married in Lincoln on Tuesday May 8. The couple were joined by Burgess two daughters and their spouses Fred Bedient and Dale Perkins. Burgess, a lifelong Nebraska resident, farms south of Polk. The bride, formerly a United States government clerk, and the newlyweds plan to live on the Burgess farm in York county. A May 4 dinner at the Bedients’ home honored the bride with guests including Dr. L A Burgess of O Neil, Dr. Wm B Burgess of Albion, and Dale Perkins and his two children of Bradshaw.

4-H Leaders Attend Training and Demo Day Plans

4-H leaders Mrs Rex Brigham Mrs Ernest Lees Mrs George Irland Mrs James Gibbins and Mrs Harry Gonnerman joined a Friday May 9 training at Schuyler. The 4-H Demonstration Day is set for June with Guy Davis visiting Osceola at 9 00 a m. attendance expected from 76 boys and 68 girls enrolled May 1st. A 4-H Roller Skating Party drew 60 members with no injuries and Victor Mangelson set a two hour bottle popping record. Next on the calendar is the 4-H Picnic.
