Securit Will Speak And Polk Around This Week

This week the Polk Around writer plans new fishing notes and prints chores. Lee Bayer and Larry Killion canoe the Platte River from Highway 14 bridge to River Road Wooded Bridge near Hord Jake, a three mile air line journey. Main Street widens five feet and removes sidewalk area to improve parking margin under coach Don Stange supervision. The Polk Progress prints a 32 page Polk Alumni Association anniversary booklet with graduates’ addresses and life details.

Grade School Track Meet Held May 8

The Polk grade school track meet on May 8 saw sixth grade girls lead with 4014 points while boys totaled 37. Fifth grade girls scored 2414 to 20 for the boys, and fourth grade boys beat girls 16 to 8. First place winners include Robbie Glasser and Darla L Heureux in sprints, Mike Lindburg in the 75 yd dash, David Flodman in the 440 yd run, Marcia Myers in the 220 yd run and high jump, and relay and field event victors across grades.

Polk High School Alumni Banquet 50th Anniversary

Enthusiastic crowd including out-of-town visitors attends Polk High School Alumni Association Golden Anniversary banquet. Toastmaster Edward Larson, class of 1933, leads with Mrs. Vergil Bush as president. Honored classes span 1914 to 1964. a 32 page commemorative booklet priced at $2 covers rolls, addresses, occupations, school history, athletics, and service. Bobby Mills Orchestra to play at Community Hall dance following the event.

Summer Recreation Program Opens with Baseball Practice

The Summer Recreation Program begins Monday evening June 8 at 7 00 with younger boys 12 and under practicing on Mondays and Thursdays. Older boys meet Tuesdays and Fridays, and girls on Wednesdays at 7 00. Bill Lavelle returns to direct after a successful prior year. Contributions are welcomed at the Progress office to fund the program.

The Swede Plain congregation honored Rev and Mrs O A Johnson at a supper. After a short program a gift was presented as they prepare to move to Fairbury in the near future.

Graduation Celebrations Honor Local Seniors and Guests

After commencement Gail Giles was honored at the Baptist church parlor by Mr. and Mrs. Ben Peterson with about 70 relatives and friends. Governor Frank Morrison of Lincoln attended as speaker and was presented in a receiving line. Numerous out of town guests from Stromsburg Osceola York Lincoln and Central City joined celebrations at several homes.

Bloodmobile to Visit Polk on May 26

The Red Cross Bloodmobile will be at Polk Grade School Auditorium from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Donors aged 21 to 59 may give. ages 18 to 20 require parental permission. Chairman Mrs. Paul Strand and the American Legion Auxiliary sponsor the drive seeking 120 donors. Hospitals pay a $6.50 per pint participation fee. blood is free to patients.

Large Crowd Hears Governor Morrison At Commencement

A large crowd attended the Polk High School commencement in the gym on Thursday May 15. Seventeen seniors received diplomas from Edward Reckner with Walter Nielsen presenting them. Governor Frank Morrison gave the address noting changes in education since his graduation and stressing enduring moral values.
