Eldon Johnson Tops County Judge Primary Vote

Eldon Johnson led five candidates for county judge with 510 votes in Tuesday’s primary to win the race. Perry Sapp followed with 459, as 1531 total ballots were cast in the county, a higher turnout than the previous two presidential primaries.

Legion Auxiliary Regular Meeting Recaps Activities and Honors

The American Legion Auxiliary met in the Legion hall for a 6:30 supper with attendance awards and a program. Officers elected include Velma Stephens president Fern Myers vice president Elaine Miller secretary and Lauretta Neuhaus treasurer. The group honored Gold Star mothers Velma Stephens and Signe Hanquist and planned wreaths for May 29 and a Poppy Day May 2. A bloodmobile visit is set for May 26 at the grade school gym from 10:00 to 2:00 with donors recognized.

Shop Class Projects On Display May 7

The shop display occurred at the high school gym and featured seventh grade Practice Arts Projects eighth grade Practice Arts Projects and shop classes including Girls with a six week hand working course. Shop 9 showcased mechanical drawings and hand working projects while Shop 11 presented machine woodwork. Shop 12 showed metal and welding projects house construction and electrical projects.

Honors Convocation honors several at year-end ceremony

Galen Sterner was valedictorian and John Reckner salutatorian at the Honors Convocation held Tuesday evening May 12. Eighth grade valedictorian Dan Graves and salutatorian Kay Nielsen were announced. Awards included citizenship, Danforth, activity, best all around seniors, co editors of the annual, yearbook, and various individual honors for students including Delores Willits in music and Max Kroger in athletics.

Polk High's Joe Fisher Graduates With Highest Honors

Joe Fisher of Polk will graduate summa cum laude from Kearney State College on May 29 with a 3.95 GPA, the top in a class of 280. He will pursue graduate work in Urbana Illinois and was honored at Honor Day for Who's Who and the Senior Service Award. he and his wife Lynda Dornburgh are Polk High School 1960 graduates.

Governor Morrison to Speak at Polk High School Commencement

The Honorable Frank B. Morrison governor of Nebraska will deliver the commencement address at Polk High School this evening May 14 at 8 00 p m in the auditorium. Seventeen seniors and twenty seven eighth grade graduates will receive diplomas. Rev. Wm Pinkernell offers the invocation and Rev. O A Johnson delivers the benediction. Gail Giles soloist and Girls Trio Arlyce Lind Delores Willits and Gail Giles perform. After the ceremonies both groups form a line for congratulations.

Baccalaureate Services Held at Polk High School Auditorium

Baccalaureate services occurred Sunday evening May 10 at 8:00 in the Polk High School Auditorium. Mrs. Robert Merchant played the processional and recessional, with the Rev B A Barnell delivering the invocation and sermon and Rev William Pinkernell giving scripture and benediction. Junior attendants led the processional and recessional, seniors led by Janice Creech.

Former Polk Resident Dies in Hastings

Mrs. Roger Hill 45, formerly Marie Madison, Polk High School graduate, died in a Hastings hospital last week. She owned a beauty shop. her husband runs Rogers TV and Appliance in Hastings. Survived by husband, her mother Ed Madison, two daughters and grandchildren.

WSCS Installs Officers At May 7th Meeting

The WSCS met May 7th in the Methodist church parlors with Mrs. Leslie Adelson in charge. Officers were installed in a service led by Mrs. C A Johnson. Jane Fredrickson and Janice Creech sang a duet with Lorraine Reckner at the piano. A pot luck lunch followed hosted by Mrs. S J Harless and Mrs. Oscar Sundberg.

Annual School Picnic To Be Held Friday

The annual school picnic will be held in the city park at noon on Friday May 15. Buses run in the morning with no afternoon service. Report cards are handed out 11 15 to 11 30. Attendees should bring dinner and table service. coffee orange drink and ice cream are provided.

Andrew Ledwick Carlson died Saturday morning May 9 1964 at Osceola hospital aged 91 years 1 month 19 days He was born March 20 1873 in Polk County son of August and Anna Hanquist Carlson early Swedish settlers He lived on the family farm near Polk and was an agriculturalist and former dealer He married Anna Nyberg in 1909 and they had two sons Harold and Clifford He and Anna joined Bethel United Brothers Church in 1926 Memorial services were May 11 at Polk Baptist Church with Rev Wm Nyberg officiating Bearers included Clayton Ellsworth Richard Wurst Harold Hanquist and others Interment was Polk Cemetery
