Eighteen students will graduate tonight at 8:15 in the school auditorium. Arthur Crisp pastor of St Paul's Evangelical Church Lincoln will deliver the commencement address. Tomorrow ends the 1952-53 school year with the annual school picnic at noon inviting students parents and patrons.
The Legion Auxiliary elects officers: Jo Ostberg president Anita Eisler vice president Edna Steenbock secretary Irene Green treasurer. Memorial Day wreaths will be made May 27 at the Legion Hall. Members are asked to bring a Pot Luck lunch and support gifts to victims and the Gold Star Project. Initiation was led by Doris Ostberg.
Miss Maxine Kingsley daughter of Mr and Mrs William Kingsley united in marriage to William Alstadt son of Mr and Mrs George Alstadt of Norfolk Nebraska on Thursday May 7 at St Paul Methodist Chapel Lincoln Nebraska. Dr Frank Court conducted the double ring ceremony at 2:00 pm with Miss Vernette Kingsley and Jack Potters in attendance. The bride wore a pink suit and white accessories with a white orchid corsage while the maid of honor wore an aqua suit with pink rose corsage and white earnation boutonnieres. The couple left for a honeymoon in Kansas and Missouri. The bride previously attended Norfolk Junior College and worked for Stuart Investment Company in Lincoln. The groom attended Norfolk Junior College and the University of Nebraska and is with the United States Air Force.
Vacation Bible School starts Monday May 25 at 9 a.m. at the Evangelical Free Church and runs to noon through Friday. Theme Cru saders For Christ, materials by Gospel Light Press. All boys and girls invited. Also notes community visits and recent Senior Class Night at the High School with Marilyn Hahn as valedictorian and Leon Stunkel as salutatorian.
Mrs. Paul Strand announced Polk and rural areas contributed 401.85 to the Red Cross drive this week. Rural districts gave 213.50 while the town contributed 188.35. Acting rural chair Mrs. Oscar Jones led solicitors including Mrs. Martin Jones and others.
The Blood Mobile will be in Polk on June 4 from 10 AM to 4 PM. Polk County has four donors named Lind Ekstrand Johnson Carlson. Osceola Red Craggs provides blood for Gamma Globulin with shipments to Health Centers. Douglas Hall and Lancaster Counties receive allocations. Half of Polk County to recruit blood. make appointments for June 4.
The Polk County Noxious Weed District reports its spraying equipment ready and has already begun treating roadsides trees and brush. Wheat should be sprayed before stands become tar and oats should avoided spraying until boot stage though limited spraying may occur if weeds threaten oats. An Amine Salt 2 4-D mix is recommended to reduce crop damage. Patches of leafy spurge and hoary creas are noted.
Four teams start the Polk softball league with play beginning next Tuesday night May 26 under lights. Opening at 8 pm the Legion ten meets Co op Oilers, then Stromberg's Butchers face Polk Bankers in the nightcap.
Local merchants announce Memorial Day closures to honor fallen service members. Several stores will stay open until Saturday morning to accommodate shoppers unable to visit on Friday. Merchants request public cooperation in observing the day.
Polk County PMA reminds farmers purchase agreements and loans on the 1952 corn crop are due by May 31, 1952. Corn loan rate is 1.54 per bushel. Reseal programs extend loans and convert purchase agreements to loans through specified dates with storage payments for delivery to CCC.
The text notes bindweed and other noxious weeds and states that steps should be taken to control them.
The Baptist Missionary Society held an afternoon meeting with strong attendance. Emma Anderson paid tribute to nine honored ladies over 75, including Net tie Jones Charities Dahlgren Amel Lind Josephine Lindburg Linnie Shafer Albert Nelson Frank Fossberg Emma Mayo and Hannah Lindahl, with potted plants and solos marking the occasion.
The Lemuel R. Wilcox Post No. 160 will hold its annual officer election this Monday night at the regular monthly meeting. Current officers include Commander Henry Kisler Vice Commander Max Jones Adjutant Dean Myers Finance Officer Robert Steenbook. All legionnaires are urged to attend.
Five children were named winners in Sundberg and Son Hardware Store children’s photo contest held last month. Winners will enter final judging for the studio’s annual contest with prizes awarded to final winners. Parents’ names listed: Robert Willits, Ervin Blase, Arthur Phillips, Donavin Widga, Virgil Flodman.
Walden McNaught and Leonard Anderson traveled to Omaha on Wednesday for their physical examination for the Service. Darrel Shostrom Burdette Flodman and Donald Person also left Wednesday to begin induction into the armed forces.
