The Polk Woman's Club hosted a noon luncheon for high school seniors and faculty, with state convention reports, installation of new officers led by outgoing president Mrs. Merle Stromberg, and a program titled Limelight in Music by several members. The group planned next year’s meetings in the community hall, discussed heating needs, and invited Civil Defense volunteers while fundraising for the Children's Memorial Hospital bazaar.

Mabel Elvina Johnson born November 11 1891 near Clarks Nebraska died May 6 1953 aged 61 years 5 months 25 days. She married Henry Shostrom March 25 1914 and lived on farms in Swede Plain and Stromsburg before settling in Stromsburg. Survivors include daughters Marjorie Lind Irene Carleyon two sisters Nina Sedan Julia Johnson and brothers Leonard Philip Oliver Johnson. Funeral services under Rev Milton O Connor were held Friday May at Swede Plain Church with burial in Swede Plain Cemetery.

Funeral services for Adeline Graves 69 died Tuesday of a heart attack at her York home were held Friday at 2 p m at Metz Chapel with J G Alden in charge. She was born December 29 1883 in Aurora and is survived by husband Daniel Graves Jr of Bradshaw two grandchildren three sisters Lizzie Robinson of Jacksonville Illinois Rose Hemriksen and T W Horton of Pacific Palisades California and two brothers Harry Henderson of Sanger California and Howard Henderson of Brainerd Minnesota.

Judges named eighteen Nebraska groups as Ak Sar Ben Good Neighbor Award recipients for public service over the past year. The Polk Commercial Club of Polk was cited for giving freely of time to help build a Community Hall in a local theatre building. Members will receive a gold lapel emblem in a formal presentation during the year.

Junior Senior Banquet Held Friday
The Junior Senior Banquet occurred Friday May 8 at the High School Auditorium with 62 attendees including Juniors Seniors faculty and guests. Theme “April Showers Bring May Flowers” featured a rainbow pot of gold motto and a 1953 formed by flowers. A three course banquet was prepared by Juniors mothers and served by eight sophomores. Allen Ziegelheim acted as toastmaster.

Esther Ewha Ehn Carlton was born March 12, 1912 in Polk Nebraska to Gustav Emil Ehn and Christina Hall Ehn. She died May 6, 1953 at Stramsburg Nebraska at age 41 after a long illness. She married Harold L. Carlton February 24, 1935 and lived on farms near Polk and east of Polk. She leaves her husband, two daughters Barbara Ann and Marie Nadine, and son Robert Wayne, all of Polk, plus her father Gustav Ehn and many siblings. She was active in the Evangelical Free Church of Polk and its music program and accepted Christ in youth. Funeral details are not included.

Marvin Fredrickson was unanimously chosen as mayor of Polk, entering his ninth consecutive year in office as the village begins a new fiscal year. Arnold Neuhaus was rehired as Village Light and Water Commissioner at 275 dollars per month for 240 hours, subject to call, Chauncey Gustafson reappointed Street Commissioner at one dollar per hour plus 50 dollars monthly for Community Hall duties, with other appointments to Health, Library, Board, and village committees.
