A gasoline stove explosion leveled the home of Dr. C. R. Peterson and family one mile west of Polk late Saturday afternoon. The unoccupied house burned with only the clothes they wore, $6000 in damage, garage saved, insurance partial, owners Mrs L Mlander Peterson of Stromsburg.
Martin Theodore Johnson of Polk Nebraska died May 11 1935 aged 29 years six months eleven days. He grew up in Polk and graduated Polk High School class of 1925. Survived by mother four sisters and three brothers, with many relatives and friends. Pallbearers listed and thank you note to friends and neighbors.
The twenty six members of the Senior Class and sponsor Mrs. Harold Nelson spent Sneak Day touring Lincoln public institutions and other notable sites. They had a picnic lunch at Antelope Park then continued exploring city locations.
The county rural track meet was held Friday at the County Fair Grounds with multiple events for boys and girls across divisions A to D. Highlights include top marks in high jump, sprints, long and broad jumps, relays, and various field events, plus post meet reports of community visits and local spectators.
Mrs. Eric Forslund of Stromsburg a former Polk resident died suddenly at home in Stromsburg Saturday morning at age 72. She is survived by her husband two daughters Hartwig Flodman of Polk and Darryl Query of Benedict and many relatives. Funeral services were held at the Swedish Mission church in Stromsburg Tuesday afternoon at 2 o clock with burial in Stromsburg Cemetery.
The Legion Auxiliary has received poppies to distribute on Saturday on the streets. Citizens are urged to buy a poppy to support disabled veterans with proceeds funding an engaging and profitable occupation for them.
Cass McConnell of Huntley formerly of Polk died suddenly at his home in Huntley Sunday evening. Funeral services were held at Huntley with burial at Arborville Cemetery Tuesday afternoon.
Senator George W. Norris of Nebraska asked the U S Senate to reconsider the confirmation of Fred W. Schumann for Osceola postmaster after a prior approval. The move is seen as unusual and notable since Norris typically avoids patronage matters.
The Congregational Church at Arborville plans its 60th anniversary on Sunday June 14 with Rev. E R Peterson of Loup City delivering the morning address at 11.00. A basket dinner follows at noon. The program for the afternoon is not yet arranged. Decorations are under way for Decoration Day by the Arborville Cemetery Association. Members of the program committee include Mrs M R Fisher Mrs R EB Merchant and Mrs Floyd Merchant. Music by Mrs Gertrude Flick and A O Whittemore. Hazel Youngland of Stromsburg visited with her parents the Gust Youngland.
Mrs. Mary Nelson state leader in Lincoln will chair a leaders meeting for home economics projects at the Osceola courthouse on May 22 at 10 am. All girls club leaders are invited to attend and ask questions about any girls clubs lessons. At 1 15 pm she will discuss the Girls Room club lessons.
Ralph Upton the town marshal severely cut his hand on tin while aiding at the fire at Dr. C R Peterson's Saturday. Mrs A C Jones was a Sunday dinner guest of Mr and Mrs Albert Nelson at Arborville.
The community mourns the sudden death of Mrs. Eric Forslund at her Stromsburg home. Survived by husband Erle Forsland and two daughters, funeral services were held at the Swedish Free Mission Church with interment in Stromsburg Cemetery. Also, over six hundred attended the Senior Night program at Stromsburg High School featuring the Class of 1913 play Drums of Fury and the crowning of Maurine Nordlund as Queen of the May.
Sunday evening May 17 a baccalaureate service was held at the Baptist Church for the 1936 graduates. Rev Bailey delivered no very inspiring sermon. Rev Carlson led the invocation and Rev Pengelly gave the benediction. Musical numbers included the class song Send Out The Light by Gounod and a vocal solo I Am The Builder by Maurice Ellison.
A page of social notes lists Olof Ostlund and granddaughter Evelyn Spranting as Sunday guests in South Gate California and many local visits. Clean up day for Swede Plain Cemetery is set for Thursday May 28 with urged attendance.
Omaha residents plan to attend the Ak-Sar-Ben Den Show on Monday June 22 1936 and receive a free horse race ticket with their den show admission. Out-of-town visitors are admitted free to the Den show on Mondays in June or July. The show will feature a barrel of laughs and lampoon the political scene with satire of the two major parties.
Rural residents from Benedict Stromsburg Osceola and nearby areas were seen visiting family and attending services for Martin Johnson and Ella Shenk. Arlo Stevens and Blanche Stevens birthdays honored with O L Gustafson hosting. The Annual Pork Cemetery meeting is set for May 27 at 1:00 pm with bids sought for grounds care and wind mill sale by W A Stevens secretary.
