The Stromsburg high school marks the golden anniversary of its first graduating class of 1887 during May 19 commencement activities. Honor guests include Everett Lake, Guy Green, Andrew Nuquist, C. A. Morrill, and Bertha Lowe Beacher with address by F. E. Henzick.
Eighth grade pupils from Polk County are scheduled for a May 21 1937 ceremony at 2 00 p m in the Muse Theatre Osceola. The program lists processional inspirational music by teachers orchestra invocation by Rev McClure selections by the rhythm band and a diploma presentation with reserved seating and no admission charge.
Faculty at the Nebraska Medical College study insulin in insanity and mold infections as a potential illness cause. Gastroscope use expands direct stomach observation alongside X rays. Nebraska schools face enrollment limits amid national shifts. 88 graduates to intern locally. The State Hospital operated at full capacity with about 3,958 inpatients and 4,000 outpatients. Arborville district 89 held its Friday close followed by a school picnic at the schoolhouse. Miss Laverne Peterson was reelected as teacher for the coming year and local residents visited relatives across nearby towns including York and Stromsburg.
Mrs. Lawrence Sundberg traveled to Omaha on Thursday to visit relatives.
The Young People's Class of the Baptist Church hosted a party at the church Monday night to honor LaVar Sandell who will depart soon for the west to attend Diesel Engineering School. Families and friends from Stromsburg York and nearby towns joined in gatherings and dinners with noted visitors and local residents.
A large crowd from Stromsburg and nearby areas attended the Senior Night events at the high school. The Senior Class Play The Million Dollar Butler was well done, followed by the May Queen ceremony naming Miss Euleanor Ericson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wesley Ericson, as 1937 May Queen.
Mrs Otto Peterson 78 died at her York home after several weeks illness due to a heart ailment. She came to Polk County in 1885 and lived in Stromsburg for years with husband Otto Peterson in the shoe business. The family also farmed near Stromsburg and later resided in York. Funeral services were held at the J L Olson home with Rev A F Truedin officiating. Surviving sons are John of York Claud and Albert of Scottsbluffs and Charles of Kansas. burial in Stromsburg Cemetery.
Funeral services for Arthur J Carlson a well known farmer from near Durant were held at the Edwin L Anderson Funeral Home and Stromsburg Baptist Church. Rev A E Carlson of Wichita Kansas led the service. Carlson 56 died at home May 12 after long heart trouble. He was born in the Stromsburg area and survived by wife two sons five brothers and four sisters. Burial was in Stromsburg Cemetery. Reuben Jones named new mechanic at Bengtsons Garage replacing Roland Wickberg who moved to Columbus. Edna Olson completed a year teaching in Leigh schools and will spend summer with her parents. Elijah Gove chapter D A R held its final meeting of the year with officers elected for the new year. Commencement exercises for Stromsburg High School Class of 1937 were held with Dean F B Henzlick of the University of Nebraska delivering the address.
Mrs Don Johnson and Demaris attended Scotia Nebraska for the commencement exercises with Mrs Wurtz’s niece Maxine Goldfish a graduate. Mr and Mrs Virgil Kisler Mr Riley and Edith of Central City and Mrs Nelson King Mrs Walter Johnson and Miss Mary Margaret Fisher attended Monroe Henderson funeral at York Monday afternoon.

Families such as Fredrickson, Johnson, Larson, Pierson, Fredrickson, Sward attend various receptions and visits. Commencement exercises are noted for High Prairie School.

Miss Wilmetta Steele daughter of Mr and Mrs W C Steele and Merle J Watts son of Mr and Mrs Ed Watts were married at the Osceola Methodist Church in a candlelight ceremony conducted by Rev Con Hewitt before 65 guests. The reception followed. couple will live in Osceola after a brief honeymoon.
A Special May Picnic planned for Wednesday May 26 marks the 1937 Spring Season opening. Events include baseball between Immanuel Lutherans and Swede Plain, kitten ball Polk vs Hardville, horse shoe contests, bingo, plus a Polk Municipal Band concert at 8 PM.
Farmers are urged to bring roosters to Polk on Wednesday May 26 for a premium price of 9 cents per pound at Polls Produce houses. The advertisement appears elsewhere in the paper.
Miss Alice J Whiteside and Clifford Cohagan wed at 10 30 Sunday morning May 9 at the bride's parents home in Corvallis Oregon The groom son of Mrs C E Cohagan formerly of Polk will reside in Corvallis where he is employed by local firm.
A meeting is set for Tuesday May 25 at 1 30 p m on Dwight Newcomer’s farm near Victor School Hackberry precinct to exhibit a portable milk cooling tank. Wayne Thurman agricultural extension engineer will lead the demonstration and invite farmers homemakers and others to attend.
The Ulysses Board of Education raises the first grade entry age to six, or six by January 1, effective this September, aiming to reduce early-grade failure and tighten age grouping. Mr and Mrs Dean Nelson now reside in Denver Colorado where he manages a cash and carry store.
