Blood drive seeks 89 pints for Polk region May 27
Polk residents are urged to donate blood May 27 at the high school auditorium between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. The drive aims to collect 89 pints for the Red Cross Blood Program with drop in donations welcome. A World War II veteran and two children recently received blood, underscoring the need. Memorial Day union service follows at 11:00 a.m. at Polk Swede Plain High School auditorium with public invited.

Commencement exercises were held at Hordville School Auditorium on May 11 with Susan Garner leading the processional and recessional. Diplomas went to Richard Blase, Robert Clayton, Maynard Gress, Katherine Kortum, Janet Quick, Roger Andersen, Bob Blase, Paul Clayton, Craig Erickson, Stephen Gustafson, Donna Lyon, Darold Ortegren, Dorothy Stranberg, and Vicki Shoup. Craig Erickson earned the salutatorian medal and Dorothy Stranberg the valedictorian medal and scholarships. Vicki Shoup received a Midland College vocal music scholarship. A large crowd attended the annual school picnic held in the schoolhouse due to bad weather. A No host dinner honored Carl Salchow and guests at Immanuel Lutheran parlors. several area families joined in the afternoon. The Eastside Birthday Club met at Mrs Dick Harless's home with eleven members and three visitors. The Blood Drive reminder invites donors to have their names placed in the Bloodmobile Garden after May 27 and to watch for the display in Polk's main street window.

Baccalaureate services, honors, and a bridal shower noted
Baccalaureate was held Sunday May 16 at 8 p.m. in the Polk High School Auditorium with Miss Arlyce Lind leading, Rev. Gene Wood delivering the invocation and sermon, and Rev. William Pinkernell giving scripture and benediction. Attendants Allen Nunhaus and Beverly Glasser led seniors. Lorraine Reckner sang. Richard Mundt and Sherman Wilshusen performed. Rainbow Rebekahs of Pelk honored Past Noble Grands at the Stromsburg Hotel with dinner at 6:30 and gifts. Laura Merchant received recognition as longest-time member. A new member initiation was planned for the next meeting. A miscellaneous shower honored Miss Karen Fenton of Grand Island at Polk Community Hall on May 15 with pink and white decor, games, and a 27-guest lunch hosted by multiple area women.
